The enquiry has made cry and cry. The families' statements. So terrible.

On tonights BBC1 documentary Eddie Daffarn talked about how,, when he expressed concern about the boilers being put in in the entrance of the individual flats near the electrical fuse boxes.........he still remembers what he was told.

"Well if i was getting it for nothing i wouldnt be complaining"

He and other tenants also talked about the power surges including toasters blowing up and a tenant talked about losing two lamps in this way.

In a previous Guardian article ive linked another tenant thought she could smell gas on the night but then went into her kitchen and couldnt smell it any more.

The NHS Mental Health Services estimates £11000 ppl have been psychologically affected by the fire.

PortiaCastis · 12/06/2018 12:11

The whole tragedy is disgusting and heads should roll, why the fuck was this allowed to happen. It's sickening to think of those poor people burning alive through cost cutting incompetence.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 12/06/2018 12:17

This is the country we live in now, a nasty small-minded place where the poor are of no account, the rich are encouraged to cheat and steal, and the government exists on the sufferance of bankers and tax exiles.

Aeroflotgirl · 12/06/2018 15:41

I watched it last night, it was so harrowing I had a panic attack watching it(I suffer from them occassionally, and have done for 22 years). Poor poor families and loved ones who died. There was one statement where somebody asked an official a question, and he said that he would never forget the answer. Something along the lines that they should be grateful because they have free accommodation.

It wasen't free, some people bought their properties, some rented privately. I bet this would not happen to the officials in charge, they would make sure that they do not put themselves or their families at risk, but its ok for everybody else. This could have been prevented, it wasen't due to carelessness, neglect, and negligence.

Bunbunbunny · 12/06/2018 15:48

Have just driven by the tower, it’s fully covered up but still heartbreaking to see

The vile against council tenants is disgusting they were treated like 2nd class citizens and it’s still happening today. I’m struggling to watch of the recent programme as I keep thinking this shouldn’t have happened it could have been prevented

HelenaDove · 12/06/2018 16:04

Aeroflot what he said was what i wrote above It was when he was querying about the boilers being so close to the electrical fuse boxes outside each original flat. "Well if i was getting it for nothing i wouldnt be complaining"

Yes some were renting privately and some had bought but that doesnt mean that the social housing tenants were getting it "for free" As Lorraine Beadle pointed out she had been living there since August 1975 She was the first tenent to move in She said that she was PAYING rent at £700 a month How is that free?

HelenaDove · 12/06/2018 16:05

Bunbun You only have to read the threads about social housing on here to see that it gets replicated on here too.

Aeroflotgirl · 12/06/2018 16:56

I know *Helen, and that was what i meant, even if it were free, does not mean those tenants lives are worth less and safety should be compromised. As I said, it was negligence, neglect and carelessness.

Clubcuts · 12/06/2018 17:02

The poor people in Grenfell died because the rich wanted to look at something prettier. Until people stop disrespecting the poor, then this type of thing will continue.

The widows that had gaps in aided the spread of fire, do you think the companies that fitted the windows in this manner would do the same in some fancy posh apartments? I bet not, I bet they would be respectful and do a good job there.

I. An hear the attitudes now, the "they should think themselves lucky they're getting new windows or cladding or whatever" therefore we will do a shit job.

And now 72 people have died, our society is a disgrace in they way we treat our less rich people.

I could honestly scream at the people with this horrific attitude, and shame on them for looking down on others,

Aeroflotgirl · 12/06/2018 17:06

I agree Clubcuts, its like the lives of the poor are worth less, corners are cut, crap materials are used, and safety is totally disregarded. We have a tower block near us in Milton Keynes, that was refurbished about 10 years ago, it has that cladding all over it Sad. Though the tower block is not as tall as Grenfell.

Clubcuts · 12/06/2018 17:07

@MissEliza, I agree! Essentially the whole tower was wrapped in straw. Totally unprecedented.

Clubcuts · 12/06/2018 17:10

@Aeroflotgirl so do we near us, but hey it makes it look pretty! I give you £5,000 for your home, you can either put in equipment to make your life and your families safe, a new lift to take your children up and downstairs easily or paint the outside so it looks "nicer", I know what you and I would choose.

It's not just the workers, authorities or those in charge, it's a large part of society.

People need to think about their actions and words.

Aeroflotgirl · 12/06/2018 17:14

It is club, I was shocked to hear that there were lots of these tower blocks, with unsafe cladding. What use does it serve? It is just to make it look nice, really what is needed is proper safety features within the blocks.

Clubcuts · 12/06/2018 17:16

The whole thing makes me move from extreme anger to extreme sorrow, those poor people were so let down by society. It makes me so ashamed of fellow human beings.

MissEliza · 12/06/2018 17:18

What just astounds me about Grenfell is the way the council responded or rather didn't respond. Every volunteer said they thought they were filling in temporarily til the council showed up but they didn't. In the interests of full disclosure, I'm a Tory voter but I think TM majorly fucked up. People were telling the media by the end of the first day that the council were doing nothing. She should have stepped in. I mean, they've sent the army to help in flood relief. Why not for this?

hungryhippo90 · 12/06/2018 17:23

I am disgusted. Beyond disgusted.
I’ve been on construction sites for years, seen inspection after inspection on small properties, what I don’t understand is how this was allowed to happen.

I logistically know how it happened, but in my mind it’s just not computing, but then I have worked on HA houses and apartment blocks, I know the council is a law unto themselves and tend to not follow their own regs, the stuff I’ve seen happen, that’s a huge risk, they’d have private landlords hauled into court for.

It sickens me, that the people of Grenfell were vulnerable in a financial sense, they didn’t have the ability to say, well I can move across town etc. They had to stay put, they had no other choice and many of those residents are dead now.

I would like to see several people put away for this. I am however doubtful that will happen. I also hope that those who are to blame, and generally it’s everyone involved never work again in a similar sort of role.

I’ve watched some of the programmes about the fire, they always make me cry. So so sad.

Aeroflotgirl · 12/06/2018 17:33

The council go for the cheapest contract, not the best, they put cost before lives. There are people responsible for this with blood on their hands.i saw a watchdog programme about it a few weeks ago. They chased after the cladding company, and the person that gave this the green ight from the council.ciwRds just came out with robotic rehersed statements.

Stopandlook · 12/06/2018 17:38

I couldn’t watch the documentary. But I’m glad for the presence of those people who are so strong and fighting for justice. I am still shocked to the core by what happened- it’s unbearable all around.

FuelledByButter · 12/06/2018 17:38

And a lot of people still not properly re-housed. It's scandalous. "Posh" people would never be treated this way. Can the local councilors imagine spending a year with their family in a one bedroom hotel room. Ha!

Does anyone know what is planned for the site of the tower? Will they build more social housing? I hope they do.
