To swim whilst menstruating?

So funny light hearted conversation with sister and friend Friday and totally random.
I swim every Friday evening with my other half and my dc.
My sister told me it was vile for me to swim whilst bleeding. My friend disagrees and said it fine.
I did go swimming as my period was pretty much over (day 5). Would I swim whilst heavy? I would say no I wouldn’t. Would you?
Sister says it’s not fair on others swimming and friend says she’s wouldn’t care. Are there actually any rules about it? Would you? Would a tamping be suitable if you did want to swim? I’m not sure about others but if I bath whilst using a tampon it will eventually fill up with water and expand rapidly! Confused or is it just me?? Would you swim during your period?

Athlete or not, you've got to be pretty careless to leave your feet in the pool...

That must be where all the blood is really coming from ShockGrin

HeedMove · 20/05/2018 23:56

This is literally disgusting. Op you are at it!

It's interesting how different this thread is to one a few months back on exactly the same topic. In that one s large number of posters said they swam whilst on a period with no tampon or mooncup.

crumpet · 21/05/2018 07:00

I appreciate that you don’t want to wear a tampon on the last day of your period, but popping in a tampon before you go in the pool and taking it out an hour or so later when you finish swimming is the only reasonable thing to do.

Not to wear one at all is highly unreasonable. And using one for an hour or so on the last day is not going to present you with any problems.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 21/05/2018 07:16

Oh yes ! If you change before the swim and Shower first it’s fine

awomensworkisneverdone · 21/05/2018 07:34

Even if there is absolutely no reason to?
I wouldn’t say it’s unreasonable at all as i know my body and body better than anyone and I know it wouldn’t be necessary to wear a tampon for nothing Hmm

If light spotting at the end of your period is lighter than mid cycle ovulatory cervical fluid - why does one need a tampon and the other doesn't?

awomensworkisneverdone · 21/05/2018 08:34

Exactly my point banana. It’s bizzare to even think it’s ok. Ild never wear a tampon for a spot/drop. I wouldn’t even be able to get one in probably unless i was in fact menstruating Confused I certainly wouldn’t risk my health!

You seem pretty defensive about this and sure that you're in the right. Why did you start the thread?

trickyboots · 21/05/2018 09:13

I swim only at last couple of days dregs with a fresh tampon before and after. Would be too worried of leakage with a proper flow of blood. There's some rank hygiene at the pool anyway- you can't think about it.

ittakes2 · 21/05/2018 09:20

When I swim with a tampon I am careful to make sure it goes as high up as possible. If it’s getting soaked with water it’s likely it’s slipped down and needs replacing.

awomensworkisneverdone · 21/05/2018 09:50

Only defensive about my health.
My mums best friend dies of tss she was 1 of 92 women who died that year due to tampon use.. other than that not really.

Whays wrong with so many of you that use tampons in the bath???

awomensworkisneverdone · 21/05/2018 10:17

Sorry didn’t understand your question.
Do you mean what’s wrong that we need to use tampons in bath? I think page 6 I have a pretty graphic detail of what happens if I don’t wear tampons in the bath. I think every human body is so different that what happens to ones vagina may not happen to another. I find it baffling that so many women think all vaginas are identical Grin

Why would you need to wear a tampon in the bath? It's just plain weird.

SilverHairedCat · 21/05/2018 10:23

Why would you need to wear a tampon in the bath? Are you serious? What a strange question.

Given all the women here who have described their reasons I'd say it's pretty obvious.

However by way of illustration, I get through a super plus extra tampon in 2 hours on a normal day of my period. If I want a bath or to go swimming, I would not want to be perched in bloody water in either scenario for cleanliness sake or public humiliation.

Grilledaubergines · 21/05/2018 10:28

Why would you need to wear a tampon in the bath? It's just plain weird.

Only weird because you don’t need to? Plenty of women do, and therefore it’s nothing close to ‘weird’.

bananafish81 · 21/05/2018 11:00

Exactly my point banana. It’s bizzare to even think it’s ok. Ild never wear a tampon for a spot/drop

By the same token, presumably we should all be evaluating our vaginal secretions at any time of the month and shoving a tampon in to mitigate against any kind of discharge (if not wearing a tampon for very light spotting is so abhorrent)?

Everything I was going to say and more has been said so all I want to add is on the subject of water logged tampons. I'd always assumed it was water travelling up the string by capillary action.

Mother40 · 21/05/2018 12:36

This post is making me feel quite ill! I never realised that women would actually swim without a tampon, it is disgusti ng, even if you.think there is no leakage there still could be but you wouldn't notice it. I took my daughter swimming yesterday without knowing this, so am now not looking forward to the next time. She wants to go!

JacquesHammer · 21/05/2018 12:57

@Mother40 you’ll be swimming through hair, faeces, urine, body oils, old skin so I think imaginary periods are the least of your worries!

awomensworkisneverdone · 21/05/2018 14:09

Don’t loose sleep over it there plenty more in the water
