To feel extremely bloody proud to be British today?

I take our country for granted because I live in a town that is the polar opposite of what Windsor looks like. But wow - watching the Royal family today I got shivers down my spine and felt so overwhelmed with emotion.

In the past I've looked at ways of emigrating because I've been fed up of living here, but I've just realised that it's a free country and to feel better about life I can actually make the move and go and live somewhere nicer (ok, maybe not Windsor but still).

We're so lucky aren't we?

Everyone I know even republicans, of which I am one, loved the day. It did feel like a national celebration and brought a lot of people together. It also did wonders for the English tourist board. Windsor looked stunning yesterday.

GorgonLondon · 20/05/2018 11:10

no pure British blood running through this Royal Family's veins.

How quaint! I had no idea there was anyone around who still thought there was such a thing as 'pure British blood'.

That's fascinating IsMyUserNameRubbish . What else do you believe in, I wonder? The four humours? Aether? Phlogiston?

FleurDelacoeur · 20/05/2018 11:39

The same poster who refer to the Royal Family as a bunch of Germans (going back to Queen Victoria and before) are probably the same posters who throw their hands up in horror about second generation immigrant families who were born here being told to "go back to where they came from".

Because it's exactly the same of xenophobic nonsense. They are British. All of them. Including people like Prince Philip who was born overseas but has lived here for 80 years.

siwel123 · 20/05/2018 11:40

@Fleur. I'm an anti royalists but even I have to agree, they've lived in Britain most of their lives, they're british.

FleurDelacoeur · 20/05/2018 11:42

Oh and on the "his heritage is German" bit - bollocks. The Queen's mother was Scottish. The Spencer side of the family is as English as it gets.

If we're going down that route, my heritage is quite obviously Belgian as my 5 times great grandmother was from there and i'm something like 1/48th Belgian.

What a total load of anti-German bollocks.

pigsDOfly · 20/05/2018 12:13

no pure British blood running this Royal Family's veins

What a nasty racist comment; and quite chilling.

What the hell is 'pure' british blood. My DCs come from a mix of several different nationalities, most of them a few generations back. Strange to learn that by some people's standards they're not actually british.

I really am not a lover of the royals and all they stand for but that is just a ridiculous comment to make about a family who have lived here for several generations.

qwertyflirty · 20/05/2018 12:48

Agreed. Shocked by this 'pure blood' nonsense.

Britain is pretty much the most mongrel nation there is - invaded by Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Normans and with huge numbers of British people who come from all the corners of the British Empire (which stretched across about a third of the globe at one point).

There is literally no definition of 'pure blood' Britishness.

Astonishingly racist post - but more than that, astonishingly stupid too.

headstone · 20/05/2018 13:29

Second generation immigrants are not claiming to be our rulers based in their genetics and birth right, that is the difference. It doesn’t matter if the Spencer’s are British or the queen mother was Scottish, as neither of them have the royal blood that means they are our rightful rulers.

headstone · 20/05/2018 13:31

I don’t see it as racist as there is no difference in race between Northern Europeans, I just question this institution really when the royal blood part originated in another country.

headstone · 20/05/2018 13:33

And if genetics don’t matter anymore and saying that they do makes you racist, what is the actual point of the royal family?

pigsDOfly · 20/05/2018 13:52

Nobody has 'royal blood' or 'pure british blood', an expression that smacks of organisations such as 'britain first' it's a ridiculous, notion.

And the point of the royal family? There isn't one really. I'd be happy to see the whole system abolished. But that's got nothing to do with their heritage.

headstone · 20/05/2018 17:36

If you don’t believe in the royal family as in institution at all that is fine, however the whole point of the royal family since in arrived in this country is based on genetic heritage and the commoners always viewed the family as special even God like because of this. Since they’ve now decided to modernise and marry whoever they choose and I include Kate Middleton as well in this , They can no longer claim to be what they were in the past and the whole thing should cease to exist.

pigsDOfly · 20/05/2018 17:48

I'm pretty certain that all commoners haven't always regarded the royal family as special and certainly not god like before they started marrying who they liked.

My parents were born at the beginning of the 20th century and neither of them could abide the royals or the whole institution.

Or maybe you're thinking earlier than that. But as far as I know they were still being told who to marry well into the 20th century.

EyeOfAgamotto · 20/05/2018 17:55

Never understood this 'proud to be [enter nationality here]' stuff. I always thought pride should be related to actual accomplishments (including your children) rather than something you have no control over.

I'm Scottish. I'm glad to be Scottish and happy to be Scottish. However if I'd been born in Helsinki, or Lagos, or Vaduz rather than Aberdeen I'd be happy to be Finnish or Nigerian or whatever people from Liechtenstein are called.

PlatypusPie · 20/05/2018 18:05

This thread has really brought out the whingers and moaners, the ‘what about the...’ and the ‘ its not fairrrrrr ‘. Lovely sunny day, lots of people did enjoy it, a general cheerful atmosphere even for those not massively interested in the couple. Be happy for others even if your own default is to to be bitter.

BonnieF · 20/05/2018 18:10

Why would I be proud to see tens of thousands of my fellow citizens, sorry, subjects bowing, scraping and tugging their forelocks to a bunch of privileged inbreds?

I will be proud of my country when the last food bank closes, when private schools are banned and when it is a republic.

LoveInTokyo · 20/05/2018 18:24

I hope Harry and Meghan will have a happy marriage but no, the royal wedding doesn’t make me feel proud to be British.

Ihatebuildabear · 20/05/2018 18:39

Disagreeing with the concept of the royal family does not make you bitter or a winger.

Ihatebuildabear · 20/05/2018 18:39

*whinger

IsMyUserNameRubbish · 20/05/2018 18:58

@pigsDofly how frigging idiotic are you? "Quite chilling"? You daft twat!! My reference to "no pure British blood running through their veins" was in regard to some ignorant so and so not knowing the Royal family are of German descent, so before you insinuate someone is racist, read the whole thread first to get you facts right, idiot! And that goes for the other ignorants insinuating the same. So you must be racist in your minds for thinking what isn't there, frigging idiots, I'd actually really appalled at you all, if I gave an actual shit what you thought. I'm staying off here for a while, there really are some nasty people on here, and I have a right to be nasty before you start in regards to your insinuating I'm a "racist" comments. "QUITE CHILLING" hilarious!!! LOL 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Deathraystare · 20/05/2018 18:59

I am just glad the focus was not on Brexit for a day . What a shower of shite that is! We are a laughing stock to the rest of the world but we do know how to do pomp!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 20/05/2018 19:05

I’m actually ashamed of being British.
Brexit and the whole car crash government
Child poverty
Unhappiest children in the world
Embarrassing foreign secretary
Little Englander mentality
Gammons
Silly price transport
Shite infrastructure
Shite pay for public employees
Shite treatment of the NHS

Wtf is there to be proud of apart from some history and beautiful scenery🤨

derxa · 20/05/2018 19:23

Still, it keeps the masses distracted from the real news out there that actually affects people. We've had enough 'real news' in the past couple of years. It was nice to see something trivial and lighthearted on the news for a little while. Now we can go back to Brexit, Trump, Syrian atrocities, N Korea, Russian aggression, Rohingya massacre, ebola, poverty, natural disasters, incompetent politicians, corruption, sexual abuse and so on. I care about all of those things but...
If our RF are such a shower of shit then why were so many reporters and film crews from all over the world in Windsor this week?

Vicky1990 · 20/05/2018 19:40

The whole world looked apon this event and relished the spectacle.
No other country could stage such an event that gave so many people the joy, happiness, respect and love of this great nation of ours.
You could not possibly buy the affection that the Royal family brings to our shores from around the world.

ALongHardWinter · 20/05/2018 19:44

Her wedding dress cost the tax payer 30K? I read online (Metro News) that it cost anything between 200K and 400K! faints on the spot
