To feel extremely bloody proud to be British today?

I take our country for granted because I live in a town that is the polar opposite of what Windsor looks like. But wow - watching the Royal family today I got shivers down my spine and felt so overwhelmed with emotion.

In the past I've looked at ways of emigrating because I've been fed up of living here, but I've just realised that it's a free country and to feel better about life I can actually make the move and go and live somewhere nicer (ok, maybe not Windsor but still).

We're so lucky aren't we?

What a horrible, bitter bunch of responses on this thread.

AnneElliott · 19/05/2018 22:55

Well yes Siwel - they would have been doing other stuff if not fir the wedding. That's the same with football matches too though - all the cops sorting and preventing grown men from causing a riot over 22 men and a ball.

And that happens every single Saturday. I can't get too get up about a royal wedding once every couple of years.

siwel123 · 19/05/2018 22:57

@louisianna16.
We're allowed to be so called bitter. Seems as our tax is spent on them. Seems as we still celebrate one family ruling all over us just because they're born into riches.
I'm not bitter, I'm what would you call it republican?

madeyemoodysmum · 19/05/2018 22:57

How the hell is Harry a German!!

That link ended generations ago. Give it up!

siwel123 · 19/05/2018 22:58

@AnneElliot. I can Grin.
We all know it is not just policing costs that the royal family cost us though.

Furthermore the police are paid by clubs if any officer steps inside stadium ground / private property.

DalmatianDots · 19/05/2018 23:01

In what sense is Harry German FFS?

What a miserable bunch of twats on this thread?!

beansforbreakfastonceagain · 19/05/2018 23:02

I agree with this.

AnneElliott · 19/05/2018 23:02

Yes they charge for inside the stadium Siwel, but it's outside where most of the violence, and therefore the policing takes place. And the police can't charge for anything if not on land owned or leased by the football club.

Some matches have 400 cops and can cost £1m a time for high risk matches. All fir profit making clubs who have loads of money but force taxpayers to fund their private enterprise. You can tell I have an issue with that Grin

siwel123 · 19/05/2018 23:03

One poster made a German comment. Now we're all miserable twats?

bridgetoc · 19/05/2018 23:04

The hilarious snowflake lefties are out in force on this thread..........Grin

siwel123 · 19/05/2018 23:14

GrinGrin. Where?

qwertyflirty · 19/05/2018 23:42

Very proud of Britain and the Royal Family today.

I know they have some dodgy Nazi skeletons in the closet eg Edward VIII, Princess Michael of Kent, videos of the Queen doing Nazi salutes as a small child etc - BUT they absolutely nailed it today.

In the age of Trump and the so-called Alt-Right, they couldn't have sent a stronger message in support of the black community today, and I hope that that will reverberate around the world, particularly the US, where the symbolism of today's events can't be under-estimated.

All happiness to the happy couple!

headstone · 20/05/2018 00:04

While I think it’s great the ceremony celebrated Meghan’s African American heritage I think it should have also shown Harry’s German heritage, seems a bit unfair on him. Perhaps some of it could have been done in German.

qwertyflirty · 20/05/2018 07:07

WTF?

Harry is not German - he is a British prince! Is it possible to be any more
British?

Dozer · 20/05/2018 07:11

I am a republican and wasn’t happy about the cost but am glad the arrangements in Windsor went smoothly and the sun shone and everything there looked twee and stereotypically “British” as that will be good for tourism and therefore the economy.

I didn’t know that policing costs for sports events other than inside the stadium were borne by taxpayers - that’s shit and should be changed.

IsMyUserNameRubbish · 20/05/2018 08:20

@qwertyflirty Google the House of Hanover (when a king had to be brought from Germany to rule) and more recently Prince Albert, also German. So, Prince Harry's heritage is indeed German, and his grandfather is Greek, so yes, no pure British blood running through this Royal Family's veins.

kalapattar · 20/05/2018 08:28

Jeez. My Great Grandparents are Irish. Does that make me Irish?

Still - good attempt at a derail.

IsMyUserNameRubbish · 20/05/2018 08:33

No, I didn't say it makes him German, I said his heritage is German, as your heritage is Irish.

Stil......good attempt to derail? well if that's what the truth does, so be it.

sandgrown · 20/05/2018 08:33

I like the Royal Family and I enjoyed the coverage of the wedding . This country stages these events so well. The Royal Family do not rule over us like the kings and queens of old. The government create the rules and these are people many of us voted for so we are to blame ! When we have a general election so many people fail to even vote then moan like mad about who is elected.

kalapattar · 20/05/2018 08:37

No, I didn't say it makes him German, I said his heritage is German, as your heritage is Irish

Hmm. Grandparents, parents and me born in England.

I think my heritage is English.
How far back do you think someone has to go to have an English heritage?

SusanneLinder · 20/05/2018 08:46

Yes....I felt very proud. Seeing homeless people in Windsor moved on so that middle class luvvies, looking like Patronusesof Nigel Farage, could camp out instead to see 3 seconds of H and M pass in a carriage.
And don't get me started on the "invited" guests from charities who spent a fortune on outfits, travel and hotel bills, and got to STAND in a speshul place , and didn't even get to meet the happy couple. Oh and had to bring their own picnic. Angry.
Know thy place peasants!
The only thing worth it about the day was Michael Currie !

SerenDippitty · 20/05/2018 08:50

I’m ashamed that I live in a country where something like Grenfell could happen, and a nice royal wedding makes sod all difference to that.

IsMyUserNameRubbish · 20/05/2018 08:57

@kalapatter this is the last I'm saying in this matter but, your heritage goes back as far as you can trace, and everyone contributes to who you are today, hence terms like "Anglo-Saxon" or "African-American" Your grandparents may have been born in England, but were were there's born, and theirs born? as I say, all contributes to who you are.

kalapattar · 20/05/2018 09:01

s I say, all contributes to who you are

You do know that my Great Grandparents on my Dad's side being born in Ireland has fuck all to do with who I am?

kalapattar · 20/05/2018 09:02

this is the last I'm saying in this matter but, your heritage goes back as far as you can trace, and everyone contributes to who you are today, hence terms like "Anglo-Saxon" or "African-American

In that case, we can all trace our heritage back to Africa.
