To feel a little grossed out by shoes off rule in summer

Just had beautiful new carpet laid

Usual rule of shoes off when coming in from outside applies

However at this time of year that often involves bare feet and it makes me twitchy seeing sweaty mucky feet from wearing sandals on my beautiful carpet

I would never Say anything to an adult but am I alone in hating bare feet in my home but then also not wanting sandals to be kept on

Basically I’m being a difficult bugger

Plastic would make feet even sweatier. 🤢

WindDoesNotBreakTheBendyTree · 18/05/2018 16:46

maybe entertain in the garden?

ConciseandNice · 18/05/2018 16:48

YANBU. We’ve just had new carpets and it sounds gross. Luckily we live somewhere where having bare feet would be considered madness and it’s never warm enough for anything less than tights.

SweetCheeks1980 · 18/05/2018 16:51

Tell your guests to walk on their hands because you have issues...but wait they might have dirty, germy hands.

TroubledLichen · 18/05/2018 16:51

Just don’t have people over. Saves the carpet AND you don’t have to entertain. Win-Win. Grin

But you could buy a load of cheapo flip flops and keep them in a wicker basket by the door for guests? Bit gross to re-use them so you’d have to have fresh each time plus then there’s the awkward convo of please put these pound shop shoes on, I don’t want your stinky sweaty toes on my carpet... Better to refer back to my first point and don’t invite anyone round!

Footsie or ballerina Slipper Socks, doesn’t everyone have a pair in their handbag just in case?

Why not invest in one of those foot baths you get at swimming pools? For the doorstep?

GnotherGnu · 18/05/2018 17:01

Why are bare feet worse than shoes that have been walking over mud, dog shit, spit, vomit etc on the pavements?

expatinscotland · 18/05/2018 17:02

Oh, FFS!

PuppyMonkey · 18/05/2018 17:04

You are literally going to have to accept one or the other or just stay inside the house with your carpet and never allow any visitors to come round again.

Elementtree · 18/05/2018 17:05

No. Can't say I have ever stopped to give a shit about shoes or bare feet in my home.

Passportto · 18/05/2018 17:05

Personally I've always felt that my guests being comfortable is a higher priority than my carpet. They can wear what they like. I always wear socks if going to a shoes off house because I don't want to display my athlete's feet, lets hope your friends have the same forethought Wink

Ski40 · 18/05/2018 17:05

Yes I hate that too. But I have wooden floors for that very reason- first thing we did when we bought the house, as the thought of people's bare feet or shoes all over the old carpet...well...bleugh. 🤢
Now I have wood I can just mop it after visitors are gone. I have a 3 year old who still plays on the floor etc x

Elementtree · 18/05/2018 17:06

I do think the sheep dip solution is kind of cool though Grin

Rainydaydog · 18/05/2018 17:07

You could get a steam mop OP

elisenbrunnen · 18/05/2018 17:08

You know what you you could do, OP - get sone of those lovely transparent plastic runners to cover your lovely carpet? You could get some lovely plastic to cover your settee too, so people's nasty germy jeans bums don't cause any marks. Would look lovely.

I've got wooden floors, and mop them about once a year.

PuppyMonkey · 18/05/2018 17:08

I do sometimes wonder how some MNers survive everyday experiences like walking outside and doing a poo.

Ingredients · 18/05/2018 17:12

I think the soles of shoes must be dirtier than the soles of feet.

elQuintoConyo · 18/05/2018 17:13

Pop down to your local Ikea and pick up some of their cheapo hazmat suits (think they're called Nömingün). If you have a family card you get a couple of quid discount.

ILikeMyChickenFried · 18/05/2018 17:14

We have no shoes indoors. Husband is from SE Asia where it's a very normal house rule. I much prefer bare feet to shoes that have been walked through goodness knows what.

TomRavenscroft · 18/05/2018 17:15

Why are bare feet worse than shoes that have been walking over mud, dog shit, spit, vomit etc on the pavements?

Yes, exactly.

Pengggwn · 18/05/2018 17:17

This is like a fussy person's Everest, isn't it? Smile

Cakeorchocolate · 18/05/2018 17:25

Annette "Footsie or ballerina Slipper Socks, doesn’t everyone have a pair in their handbag just in case?"

I can honestly say it has never crossed my mind to keep something like that in my bag just in case. Especially any at £19 for a single pair?! Shock (I'm aware there will be cheaper ones available - at least I hope so! 🤣)

The only time I have spare socks for me is if heading to soft play or similar wearing no socks.

ICantCopeAnymore · 18/05/2018 17:25

Primark sell flip-flops for 90p a pair. I'd buy about ten pairs and put them in a basket by the door. Replace as necessary.

We have a no shoes rule too but all our guests have socks, thankfully.
