To feel a little grossed out by shoes off rule in summer

Highhorse1981 · 18/05/2018 16:26

Just had beautiful new carpet laid

Usual rule of shoes off when coming in from outside applies

However at this time of year that often involves bare feet and it makes me twitchy seeing sweaty mucky feet from wearing sandals on my beautiful carpet

I would never Say anything to an adult but am I alone in hating bare feet in my home but then also not wanting sandals to be kept on

Basically I’m being a difficult bugger

I could never ask people to take their shoes off - don't wanna see rows of ugly feet.
And it's just a bit Hyacinth Bouquet.
Exceptions to this are stilleto heels on expensive wood floors.

Onlyoldontheoutside · 18/05/2018 19:00

We used to have flagstone and tiles downstairs, wooden stair case and wooden floors with rugs.
The floors were cold and slippy and n socks so I told guests to keep their shoes on.This meant I didn't worry about their feet/socks getting grubby so I didn't feel obliged to wash floors just hoover them.

My DD crawled all over them as a baby and the floors were probably teaming with bugs(we had a dog too).It never occurred to us that this could be a problem because it wasn't.The best rule is wash your hands before you eat.

Count and hedgehog we must be of the same vintage. Saw the title and though basket of artisanal slippers obvs.

lollygaggy · 18/05/2018 19:01

Yeah just buy a load of plastic and add it to landfill every time someone comes round.

Fucking hell, do people still actually give that little of a shit about the world we live in?

RosaRosaRose · 18/05/2018 19:02

If only we could all hover. Half an inch above ground would do it.

Yorkshirebetty · 18/05/2018 19:04

I always find it fascinating when people feel that they are they for the carpets, rather than the carpets being there for them.

LaCerbiatta · 18/05/2018 19:07

You worry about hygiene and you have carpets???? That doesn't make sense! Even without dirty shoes or dirty feet they're disgusting.

topcat2014 · 18/05/2018 19:11

Just don't bother with friends, OP, the won't be able to relax in your house anyway for fear of being judged :)

To all these people who never have carpets - your heating bills must be more than mine to compensate.

I have the carpets that came with my house 13 years ago, and we have survived runs

Loonoon · 18/05/2018 19:13

profpoopsnagle. 😂

Or install a sheep dip trench on the front path. Or a spray like for car tyres when there is foot and mouth.

Crunchymum · 18/05/2018 19:28

xsquared you wear them over shoes Grin (not bare feet)

Mousefunky · 18/05/2018 19:57

Feet/shoes on carpet is one of thee most classic MN things EVER. I think the first thread I ever read on here about five years ago was about just this Grin.

FoxesSitOnBoxes · 18/05/2018 20:01

Hands are (probably??) way germier than feet with all the door knob touching and nose picking they do. Way worse than feet all tucked up in shoes nice and safe from the germs.
Gloves?

RadicalFern · 18/05/2018 20:29

Options (to satisfy your needs for cleanliness):

  1. House slippers for everyone.
  2. Leave shoes on + regular carpet cleaning.
  3. Shoes come off and are not replaced with house slippers + regular carpet cleaning.
I for one favour the house slippers, because I have lived in China where there is a great disgust towards wearing unclean outside shoes indoors, and also a worry that letting the feet get cold on the tiled floor will lead to illness. It has rubbed off on me and I now have slippers for all seasons...

Elementtree

Oh, I think that 'life is short' is hardly a game changer when we are all on MN on a sunny Friday evening.

Hands down best response Grin

I always take socks with me if I know I’m taking my shoes off. Cheap ones though!

e1y1 · 18/05/2018 20:50

We are a shoes off household too, cannot bear the though of shoes that could have been traipsed through God knows what on the carpets.

However, APPARENTLY (and I’m almost sure this is bullshit, it has to be) bare feet are more damaging to carpets than shoes, due to the salts in sweat and the natural body oils in the skin, this actually wears out carpet fibres quicker.

Luckily, only the household have bare feet on the carpet, and this isn’t all of the time. If a guest arrived and had shoes on and nothing underneath, I’d probably have to have them leave their shoes on, firstly it’s probably a bit too much to make a guest go completely bare foot and second, athletes foot anyone, yuck!

ILikeMyChickenFried · 18/05/2018 20:58

E1.... we've a stash of hotel slippers for soulless guests!

ILikeMyChickenFried · 18/05/2018 20:58

Um sockless

Mammalamb · 18/05/2018 21:03

Hand out pairs of socks at your front door. You get packs of 5 for £2 at primark

Paleblue · 18/05/2018 21:03

I always put a pair of socks in my bag if I am going round to someone's house and am not wearing socks. I take my shoes off and then put my socks on.

e1y1 · 18/05/2018 21:09

ILike I actually used to do that, and I do actually have some spare slippers here so could go back. However, on a previous thread on here on this subject I got absolutely tore to shreds for admitting this, even though the slippers were clean and frequently washed.

So I sort of waned off doing it, not directly because of that thread, but was always in the back of my mind Grin

Username9876547 · 18/05/2018 21:12

I agree OP. What about guests with verrucas or athletes foot, etc? It makes me cringe to see people take their sweaty sandals off only to walk into my living room across the carpet where my DCs often play.

Don’t even get me started on guests that put bare feet up on my sofa. Envy

Yorkshirebetty · 18/05/2018 22:23

What about people's hands? Do you make them use sanitising hand gel at the front door, or do you hand out gloves?

Millybingbong · 18/05/2018 22:27

I'm loving "wandering outside and doing a poo". Yours average Friday evening @puppy?
