To think I owe my dog so much

It's sunny and I've had a glass of wine, which may play some role (I'll leave it to others to decide how big or little...) in why I'm posting about my dog on Mumsnet on a Friday afternoon.

But seriously, I love my dog.

I owe him so much. We're childless and I spend a lot of time on my own as DH commutes to London for work and gets back very late (not an issue or a bone of contention, feel very fortunate that he works so hard in a job he enjoys) but I have a very flexible job where I can regularly work from home, so were it not for our dog I would be alone for most of the day.

Our dog is the best thing (other than marry) than we've done.

I love his innocent, non-judgmental little face, his gentle nature, how the tiniest event (breakfast, dinner, new ball, a butterfly, particularly interesting smell in the garden, a familiar doggy friend met on a walk) can inspire so much joy in him.

He's my reason to get up in the morning and my constant companion. I don't know what I'd do without him. Having him dependant on me to love him, walk him and look after him gives another dimension of purpose to my day.

Is anyone else grateful to have their dog/cat as their little buddy, whatever the circumstances might be?

What an absolutely lovely thread!
Have read it sobbing though as my wonderful GSD is being PTS on Wednesday.
That lovely girl has been with me for almost a third of my life and has seen me through getting married, an ectopic pregnancy, The birth of my two amazing DC, extreme illness and divorce.
I don't know what I would have done without her and am so thankful to her.
I can't quite imagine what life is going to be like after Wednesday.

Love this post! My dog is absolutely my best mate and most reliable man in my life. He’s 11 years young and has been my dds best friend, got ds over a phobia of dogs, helped me through depression and stay off meds for over 2 years, stooped a burglary, rescued me from dodgy guys in a field, inspected dds boyfriends, been there through marriage troubles and got me out of bed when I didn’t want to see another day. And rescues us from giant spiders and has sorted out many peoples mice/ rodent problems!
He’s been on camping holidays, visited relatives, had a successful flyball career and helped me deal with foster dogs and been just the best. Can you tell I love him 🙂

Yes, I adore my Dogs and my Bunnies.

They really are life changing ❤️

hammeringinmyhead · 19/05/2018 16:49

I grew up with scotties too - mum and dad have one who is nine now. She's simultaneously amazing (clever, chats away to you all day, loves a belly rub) and a nightmare (hates anyone she didn't meet in her first 3 months of life, kills the post, alerts the whole neighbourhood when there's a hedgehog in the garden at 2am). Love her to bits. We are about to adopt our own little dog.

BexConnor · 19/05/2018 17:09

What a great thread. I don't have a dog at present as my current situation isn't ideal for one, but I love them and very much looking forward to having one in the future. Their unwavering love and loyalty never fails to amaze me.

OliviaStabler · 19/05/2018 17:11

I lost my beloved cat in November 2015. Still haven't recovered. I have two great cats now who I love dearly but nothing can compare to my beloved cat.

Cockmagic · 19/05/2018 17:16

Totally agree :-) I’m very down atm with difficulties in early pregnancy and a lot of worries. Our little dog is always there to cheer me up and no matter how crap a mammy I’ve been (moping around being depressed and not taking him for morning walk) he is always so pleased to see me and give me a cuddle. We honestly don’t deserve dogs, they are the best of life.

G1ngerpig · 19/05/2018 19:17

Ours is amazing, so loving and helps us all out of our meltdowns (we're all autistic) and gets me out for a long walk every day, reminds that I have a living being to spend time with who is not complicated, just bliss. Love him.

thecatsabsentcojones · 19/05/2018 20:30

What a lovely thread, pro dog in Mumsnet is rare indeed!

I got my oldest lab just after we lost our first child. I felt utterly broken but as soon as I got this beautiful nine week puppy I started to heal, she was just what I needed. Since then she's been the constant companion of our two kids once they were born - they get nightmares, they ask for one of the dogs. We got our youngest lab two years ago, she's a nutcase but spends half her life on her back wanting her tummy tickled whilst smiling. I love the fact I'm never without her, at the moment I'm typing with my feet under her chest.

Some people don't understand the appeal, I always think that's a sad thing, they give so much.

Lordofmyflies · 19/05/2018 21:35

My dog is amazing and has enriched my life in so many ways. He's a constant companion, makes me get out and walk every day and stop to smell the roses. I've made new friends through meeting people on our walks and is the best form of therapy.

problembottom · 19/05/2018 21:37

I feel the same about my cat. However late I get home from work, he’s overjoyed to see me. DP works abroad a lot and my cat follows me around the house, happy as long as he’s near me, so I’m never lonely. We have ridiculous games of chase when we’re in the mood and at other times he can be wonderfully cuddly and purry. We can have a house full of people downstairs and he’ll be upstairs waiting outside the loo for me to come out! It’s nice to be adored. Smile

Ellapaella · 19/05/2018 21:49

Ah lovely post OP! I feel the same about my lovely dog. I am lucky enough to also have children but the love between me and my dog is so uncomplicated, they really ask for nothing except your company and care. I love the sound of her tail thumping on the floor in the morning when she hears my alarm go off (she sleeps next to my bed). I love how she is always so happy to see me. I honestly think there is so much dog hate on mumsnet but a dog enriches your life in so many ways. My children also adore her and she adores them - she really looks after them, always making sure she stays close to them if we are out walking or playing.

bigsighall · 19/05/2018 21:52

I’m with you. I love my dog so much (more than most people!)
Can’t even explain how much joy he brings to my life Grin

JuneFromBethesda · 20/05/2018 11:26

I love my dog! She greets every day with such enthusiasm. I work from home 4 days a week so we're together almost every waking moment. Well, I say waking - she mostly sleeps while I work Grin I love watching her when she's sleeping, love watching her gallop into the bushes on a walk, or fling herself into the nearest pond. I love how well she and I understand each other, with no need for words (although she has some odd neuroses and there are some occasions when I wish she could tell me what's going on in her head!)

I love her to bits. She's wonderful Smile

DeadButDelicious · 20/05/2018 11:44

After my first Daughter died, it was my little Lolly pug that kept me going. I had to keep on getting up in the morning, I had to keep going, for her, she needed me. She was there every time I couldn't stop crying, through the darkest of days, she never left my side, she saw me through the unimaginable.

When she got sick, I did everything I possibly could to fix it for her, thank goodness for insurance because it cost a small fortune I can tell you. It broke my heart when I had to let her go. She was my best friend that little dog and I miss her everyday.

FIL is currently in hospital and not in a morgue due to DH's dog alerting MIL and enabling her to call an ambulance. We're not very hopeful sadly but it's bringing DH a lot of comfort that his dog gave his dad the best chance he could have had.

Enwi · 20/05/2018 12:30

Yes yes yes to this thread Grin
I love my dog to pieces, he has so much personality and spirit and is just the funniest thing. He’s never been particularly cuddly or affectionate, and it’s always on his terms when he is.
The past week or so has been a tough week for me emotionally and physically after my waters broke on Monday evening at only 34 weeks. I’ve been in such a mess worrying for our baby and what is going to happen now. Our dog has been a godsend. Constantly offering me cuddles and comfort when I’m feeling down, following me around the house as I’ve been having fainting spells (due to low blood pressure) and alerting my partner if I’m about to have one. I was laying on the sofa last night and was reading some scary documents about induction (which I will now have to have) and I had tears rolling down my face. My dog brought me a teddy from his toy basket and instead of begging for me to play like he normally would, he just put it on my chest and then lay next to me. It was the sweetest thing.
I am SO grateful for him and love him so much Smile

AveAtqueVale · 20/05/2018 12:36

I’d absolutely love a dog - we had a cocker spaniel when I was growing up and I loved him SO much. I still miss him. We’ve just got a kitten though who luckily is quite cuddly and affectionate. Im definitely more of a dog person but I’m currently sitting with him on my knee purring away like a little steam engine and have to admit he’s rather gorgeous. Our flat definitely feels much more homely now we’ve got a pet.

I don't know where this came from but there's a saying "be the person your dog thinks you are" or something like that. So lovely to have a thread about dogs that's just positive lovely stories and no nastiness.

FloweringSynchronicity · 20/05/2018 14:03

@movinonup Flowers for you and your lovely girl. Lots of courage will be needed on Wednesday Sad

Theworldisfullofgs · 20/05/2018 14:08

I love my dog too. I have kids and he's fantastic with them. He is my ds's best friend, the teenagers confidante, my friend when I work from home and my dh's purpose when he was Ill. Only the cats don't particularly like him but tolerate him.
He's just so funny and sweet. And loves bouncing on the trampoline.

Oh yes, me too! I love my dog so much, he has added so much to our lives. I'm sometimes just look at his little face and want them cry, I love him so much!

I have four ,one I recently inherited. They are all different, all big and one is shedding and I can prob make a duvet with it Grin. But we live them all to bits .We are lucky we have a big house so have the room and live really .The two eldest are 13 and 14 respectively and the other two are younger. We inherited the 13 yr old,he is deaf but apart from that in fab health but didn't want him to go to a strange home as he had been with my now passed away parent since a young dog and our 14 yr old we had since my son was very young just don't know what I will do when we lose her ,I don't want to think about it .She is still sprightly, vet said she is amazing for her age ,she is a herding breed so loves to try herd our cats. They are all the clever breeds too so lot doggie intelligence ,think stair gate to stop then getting upstairs,Yeap they Sussed that .All very protective of our DC's would not be without any of them .They are our furry family members .
