To think I owe my dog so much

It's sunny and I've had a glass of wine, which may play some role (I'll leave it to others to decide how big or little...) in why I'm posting about my dog on Mumsnet on a Friday afternoon.

But seriously, I love my dog.

I owe him so much. We're childless and I spend a lot of time on my own as DH commutes to London for work and gets back very late (not an issue or a bone of contention, feel very fortunate that he works so hard in a job he enjoys) but I have a very flexible job where I can regularly work from home, so were it not for our dog I would be alone for most of the day.

Our dog is the best thing (other than marry) than we've done.

I love his innocent, non-judgmental little face, his gentle nature, how the tiniest event (breakfast, dinner, new ball, a butterfly, particularly interesting smell in the garden, a familiar doggy friend met on a walk) can inspire so much joy in him.

He's my reason to get up in the morning and my constant companion. I don't know what I'd do without him. Having him dependant on me to love him, walk him and look after him gives another dimension of purpose to my day.

Is anyone else grateful to have their dog/cat as their little buddy, whatever the circumstances might be?

LaurieFairyCake she's gorgeous. I'm not brave enough to post a picture of ours, he's quite distinctive looking!

twuntingcrow I'm so very sorry to hear that, but so pleased you have your little old man to help see you through.

Yes! Mine grumbles and chatters away too !

She talks to the horses on the tv and to Nigel and Nellie when Gardeners World is on. She does a drawn out yawn/grumble/whine when DH gets home and sits in front of him grumbling to be fussed.

Scottie’s are such talkers Smile

Aaaaw. YANBU. I don't have a dog but I love them. I totally get everything you say, OP.

I always remember a quote I read: 'My dog reminds me to always be overjoyed when I see my loved ones.'

They take such unabashed pleasure in things. It's a lesson we all need to keep learning over and over, IMO.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 18/05/2018 16:34

Guys, I hear you. I am so in love with mine. Their love and sweetness restores my faith in this crazy world. I can't stand being apart from them.

aldoushuxleyatemymescaline · 18/05/2018 16:37

I love my three mutts beyond measure - was told that would change when I had kids but it hasn't. They've seen me through miscarriages and a catastrophic fall out with a parent they didn't judge me when their little heads have been soaked by tears. They've seen me laugh, dance like a dick and they don't judge my taste in music. They are just always happy to be with me and I'd do anything for them.

As a lady I overhead in a Glasgow shop said once, "to be sure, dUg is God backwards". Grin

God bless little doggies everywhere. ❤ 🐶

I love this thread.

I think my dog is an angel in disguise. She’s so gentle and trusting and loves everyone and everything. I love the smell of her especially her ears and paws!

She has late stage kidney disease and the thought of losing her terrifies me. She is quite well at the moment though, so we really do make the most of every day with her.

ruraldreamer · 18/05/2018 16:42

Lovely thread op.

I adore my dog, she's also a rescue and we've had her for 6 years. She was terrified when we first brought her home and wouldn't come near us but, with patience, love, good food and bribing with cheese, she started approaching us and it now like a normal dog - wanting to play, nudging us with a toy etc.

I'm working from home today and can't see her from my desk although we're in the same room but she's currently in her bed and I can hear her legs twitching and little wuffs so she's clearly having a great dream.
She melts my heart Smile

My dog is amazing, So affectionate loving and giving. The worst thing is she is a rescue and seems to think we are pretty awesome too. Strange animal.

crispysausagerolls · 18/05/2018 16:44

YANBU! Our little doggy helped me through fertility issues and I absolutely adore him. Now that we are expecting I am delighted that in a few years he will have someone to play with. We are inseparable and he's gorgeous and smells lovely and is super cuddly. He's also a bit of a maniac who likes to walk around on his hind legs 😂🙈 guess he thinks he's a person

Never thought i would be a dog person but we got one just after our son was stillborn. Felt like he completed the family at a point it felt so broken.

He is beautiful, fierce, protective and loyal and i dont think anyone loves me quite as much as him. I love him to pieces but gosh do i wish we had never spoilt him. 😁

My third child is a veteran Border Terrier, now almost 13. Dogs are the most wonderful creatures. They never complain, or hold a grudge. They have a true joy of life.

The year my DH died was the year that one DC was getting married and the youngest off to Uni. Our others being older had already left home. DH and I had so many plans that went unfulfilled, sadly. My sanity was saved by my little guys (two tiny fluffy paws). They helped me adjust from being a wife and mum in a busy household to living alone. One of my little guys is really old now but he still acts like a daft puppy. They snuggle in and come for cuddles, bring toys to play with, make me not feel alone. I love my little guys more than life itself and can't imagine I would have got as far as I have without them. Dogs rock!

RickOShay · 18/05/2018 17:24

I am the same. I have a big black labrador who I love with all
my heart. He is one of the best things about my life.

harriethoyle · 18/05/2018 17:26

Oh God, absolutely. I have two spaniel boys and I genuinely love them more than anything in the world. They're both rescues and they are so grateful and loyal and loving. However bad a day I've had, their greeting at the front lifts me straight back up!

DOGS ARE THE BEST!

harriethoyle · 18/05/2018 17:27

Dogs are definitely brilliant! We don't have one but walk an Alaskan Malamute every Sunday morning :)

Love dogs, the only animal that loves you more than it loves itself. I miss my furry girl so much but I was lucky to be her human. DH wants a dog but we work full-time and i’m not sure I could go through that heartbreak again.

SK166 · 18/05/2018 17:48

Before we got our pup, I knew I'd love him but I was sure I'd keep it all firmly in perspective and see him as a companion, friend, but definitely a dog.

HAHAHAHA.

I love that mutt so bloody much that sometimes I get a bit weepy over worrying that I'll never really make him understand just HOW MUCH I love him. He is my absolute most favourite creature in the world (apart from possibly DH).

He's currently snoozing in a patch of sun and I'm torn because I really want to go and cuddle him but also I want him to enjoy his peaceful doze undisturbed.

Dogs are the greatest and we don't deserve them.

OnTheporch · 18/05/2018 17:48

I totally get you OP. It's my dogs birthday today so I've just taken him to a dogs play park. He had so much fun running and playing with the other dogs but never let me out of his sight. Afterwards I took him to pet shop to choose a toy - he picked an elephant teddy and carried it back to the car himself. Sometimes I look at him and could honestly cry. It never fails to amaze me how beautiful, loyal and innocent dogs are.

"If everyone thought like a dog, the world would be a much better place"

WeWere0nABreak · 18/05/2018 17:51

You are all being so U.

DP dislikes dogs and so the dream of having a scruffy little mutt of my very own that I've had since falling in love with Timmy (famous five) has been shattered. V jealous of all your lovely hounds!

WeWere0nABreak · 18/05/2018 17:53

Also these are hilarious - but the dog one is so sweet and accurate!!

I've got a jack Russell x toy poodle and I love her. She's my buddy. I got her because she's totally deaf and her previous owners couldn't cope with her being needy.
She's got me out of the last stretches of serious drug addiction, because I've got to get up and walk her and I can't lie in bed all day feeling sorry for myself, or stay up/out all night. She's changed my life. Sounds silly I know but we needed each other!
I'm pregnant and someone suggested I should get rid of her when the baby's born. I was furious. She's with me for her whole life. And I'll love her all of mine. (now I'm crying because of bloody hormonesGrin)

isthismummy · 18/05/2018 17:56

My dog will be having her first birthday next week.

She's such an adorable, loving, sweet little girl. She brightens my world every day and I don't know what I'd do without her.

There's no love on earth like the love you get from your dog♥️

I love my cavalier, Charlie with all my heart. He's so gentle and loving. He sleeps on my bed, and snuggles right next to me, and rubs his head on the side of my face. He follows me everywhere. If I want a cuddle, I'll say to him, Cavie Cuddles, and he jumps on my lap. I only have to think of him not being there, and I could cry. A home is just a house without a dog. 🐕
