To think I owe my dog so much

Fernandfarrow · 18/05/2018 15:50

It's sunny and I've had a glass of wine, which may play some role (I'll leave it to others to decide how big or little...) in why I'm posting about my dog on Mumsnet on a Friday afternoon.

But seriously, I love my dog.

I owe him so much. We're childless and I spend a lot of time on my own as DH commutes to London for work and gets back very late (not an issue or a bone of contention, feel very fortunate that he works so hard in a job he enjoys) but I have a very flexible job where I can regularly work from home, so were it not for our dog I would be alone for most of the day.

Our dog is the best thing (other than marry) than we've done.

I love his innocent, non-judgmental little face, his gentle nature, how the tiniest event (breakfast, dinner, new ball, a butterfly, particularly interesting smell in the garden, a familiar doggy friend met on a walk) can inspire so much joy in him.

He's my reason to get up in the morning and my constant companion. I don't know what I'd do without him. Having him dependant on me to love him, walk him and look after him gives another dimension of purpose to my day.

Is anyone else grateful to have their dog/cat as their little buddy, whatever the circumstances might be?

vampirethriller I'm pregnant atm too and somebody recently asked me if I was concerned about the fact I have a dog.

I said yes. I'm having twins and rehoming them both will be a right hassle if my pup doesn't like themGrin

TweedAddict · 18/05/2018 18:04

I’m exactly the same. I have more pictures of my dogs up in the office then of my DH or DS.
I’ve 3 fur babies but one is particularly close to me and is my total shadow- a true Velcro dog. The other 2, ones my husbands shadow and the other a collie- who does her own thing and just gets on with life- a complicated soul, who only wants fuss when she wants it, and would rather look out of window then welcome anyone home. The muppet.
At work, I’m often told to man up as I’ll spend a few minutes daydreaming off looking into my pups eyes (I’ve got a very good picture of a ‘sad eye’ moment) I’ve even been known to shed a little tear. Good job all my work colleagues are dog people!

LidlAngel · 18/05/2018 18:05

My last cat was my fluffy shadow for 13 years and he knew EVERYTHING about me. He made me laugh when I was sad, always knew when I needed a cuddle and used to sit and keep me company when I was poorly. I still cry over him now.

TomRavenscroft · 18/05/2018 18:14

vampirethriller, what a beautiful post. You and your dog have both been so in need of support, understanding and love and you've both found someone to give you those things. Smile

crispysausagerolls · 18/05/2018 18:19

Please tell me it's not just me who gets mega emotional sometimes thinking about how much I love my dog and that some day (even if in about 13 years) he will die?!

sonjadog · 18/05/2018 18:23

The last couple of years of my dog´s life I would look and him and howl a the thought that one day he would be gone.

auditqueen · 18/05/2018 18:25

It's not until you have a dog that you realise what unconditional love really is - and it is the love that they have for you. My pup brightens even the worst day and can make me go from tears to laughter just by walking into a room. There are no words to describe the terror that I feel when I think that one day I will lose him. He's, quite literally, my sunshine. I can't bear to be away from him for too long.

Luckily for me my partner feels the same!

happytobemrsg · 18/05/2018 18:28

I love your post OP!

I am incredibly grateful for my cats. They kept me company during a very tough mat leave & are the most loving, placid cats. They are so good with toddler DS who isn't as gentle as he should be sometimes. Love, love, love my two boys ❤️

ElsieMc · 18/05/2018 18:28

I have two working cockers that we rescued/rehomed two years ago. They are the most annoying, funny, loving, friendly, happy little boys you could ever meet. My dh was a bit unsure at first, but today he said he wanted to get a pic of one of them running back to him with the ball he carries everywhere.

They love a definite routine, love breakfast, going out first thing in the morning, walks and their dinner. They like to go to bed around 9.30 and curl up in bed together. They are admired when we go out all the time. Such a shame that people want pups rather than taking on a slightly older dog - so many advantages.

Lovely thread op.

Icanseethepigeon · 18/05/2018 18:29

My dog is the only thing that's pleased to see me when I walk in the door, every single day. I didn't know it was possible to feel such love for a dog - he's just so brilliant and perfect. We were lucky as he's a rescue and we've had him since he was 5. He's definitely my favourite child (and he knows it and so do the actual children Grin.

I now help the same Charity and foster other rescue dogs and I'd love to believe that I've helped, in a small way, bring the same amount of joy to others when I match them with their forever mate. I've learnt that the only thing dogs really want is love and affection and a forever home.

Can't ever imagine not having dogs in my life now.

Thank you OP, giving him a big hug now.

Ofalltheginjoints · 18/05/2018 18:31

My dog is just fabulous! We got him from a rescue last September though really he picked up, life isn’t the same but so much better.
I have had an awful day at work which ended traumatically our pup is currently curled up next to me on the sofa paws on me while I try and stop crying.

DP works away quite a bit so whilst he’s our dog I’m his favourite, although DP is the soft touch. DP has depression and the change in this since we got the dog is incredible has helped so much so really I’m not sure who actually rescued who?

Currently considering doggy birthday cakes as he is 2 next month

Tulip7 · 18/05/2018 18:36

We don't have children either (ttc c#1) but we have a dog, and who we love with all our hearts. He's our little fur baby, and couldn't agree more with everything OP states. 😍

looondonn · 18/05/2018 18:36

Gorgeous thread

They really are the best

Two of my boys now guard my innocent angel while she sleeps
One at the top of the crib at the bottom

So genuine and loyal

Kate123cl · 18/05/2018 18:40

The best post I've ever read! I wish everyone loved dogs this much! The world would be such a more beautiful place! Halo

MissWilmottsGhost · 18/05/2018 18:40

Flowers for those who have lost children Sad

My horrible hairy hound was a child substitute during years of infertility and recurrent mc. She is an old girl now and I sob thinking what it will be like to lose her. She is always a puppy to me.

Echo @ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo about everything. Even despite the username.

My dog reminds me to always be overjoyed when I see my loved ones

I love this^

GinIsIn · 18/05/2018 18:43

I love our dog so much it actually hurts to look at her precious little face sometimes. She’s the Best Thing Ever.

caperberries · 18/05/2018 18:48

This is basically how I feel about our little dog, can't imagine life without her

PorkyPortia · 18/05/2018 18:49

We absolutely adore our dog . He had a saddish background so now he is obviously walked and spoilt to death .

MaMisled · 18/05/2018 18:49

I have two fluffy little terrier crosses, aquired after my 3 DC went to university. I had no idea you could feel such overwhelming love for dogs! The whole family feel the same. Our lives revolve round them, just as they did the children's when they were younger. I adore them.

FrozenMargarita17 · 18/05/2018 18:52

OP I really want to see your dog! (Sounds like a euphemism but it isn't!)

MissusGeneHunt · 18/05/2018 18:57

Happiest thread I've read for yonks! Thank you OP! Love my two sprockers who get me through the hardest of days with my mental health issues. They and my DS rock!!

biscuitraider · 18/05/2018 19:03

I have a sprocker, she's bloody wonderful. The most gentle loving dog i've ever known. Totally mad though, i cry thinking about a time when i won't have her.

FloControl · 18/05/2018 19:10

Guide dogs, and all assistance and working dogs, are particularly special. I saw an on-duty Guide Labrador this morning at the railway station, at exactly the same time as someone walking the other way just barged past carelessly without a clue. Ignorant bastard. It would have been fitting if GL had bitten him but then Labradors aren't known for being fierce.
