King Charles and Queen Camilla

AIBU to wonder why so many people seem to think this will not happen?

I can understand why a lot of people abroad seem to think it’s likely that Prince Charles will just hand over the crown straight to William because he’s younger and more popular. Most countries don’t have royal families, and in some European monarchies routine abdication is something that actually happens.

But I was reading some of the completely mental royal wedding threads on here and was surprised by the number of similar comments. I particularly enjoyed one Daily Express reader’s person’s comment about how the public would never accept Camilla as queen.

I don’t think most people give a shiny shit whether Camilla is Queen or not, but those that do have an issue with it will have to get used to the idea. Prince Charles didn’t have to give up his place in the line of succession when he married her, therefore unless the Queen outlives Charles, he will be king and Camilla will be queen!

JenBarber seriously- you find it "touching" that he married a woman he clearly wasn't genuinely in love with and then continued a seedy affair behind his wife and kids back?? How different our ideas of romance and love must be.

The80sweregreat · 16/05/2018 10:51

Diana did need help, that much is clear. no wonder she went off the rails as she did.

HasAnyoneGotAProblemWithThat · 16/05/2018 10:53

Diana broke the rules. She knew what they were. She gave interviews & aired their dirty linen in public. Charles was not blameless but neither was she.

Juells · 16/05/2018 10:55

@TossDaily
As far as Diana goes, DP used to work with guys who went to the same gym as her. Let's just say she was a friendly sort, who was willing to help lots of lovely men have a workout

That's just the kind of shite misogynist men love to swap, if a woman is on the receiving end.

It's absolutely soul-destroying to be married to someone who is engaged in a long-term affair. It has a dreadful effect on your self-confidence, you're being gaslighted all the time, trying to figure out what's real and what isn't. For someone like Diana who probably wasn't very secure in the first place - she'd already been abandoned by her mother - it would have been very difficult to know how to deal with it. People love to nod wisely and blame her, but she was in an impossible position.

TossDaily · 16/05/2018 10:55

Why is it misogynist to say a woman enjoys sex with a lot of men?

Good on her.

JenBarber · 16/05/2018 10:57

Yes, it's touching.

Charles and Di had a fake sleb marriage. Camilla is his true love.

Yes, he should have put his foot down about marrying Di, but the royals are pretty much bred into captivity and he probably had very little choice about it.

Imagine being forced to marry someone you had nothing in common with while the love of your life was right there!

purits · 16/05/2018 11:00

the forensic attention paid to her by a voracious press which meant she couldn't nip out to buy a bag of potatoes without being pursued

Who encouraged that 'forensic attention' though? She loved it, encouraged it when it went her way. She and the Press fed off each other.
Princess 'naff off' Anne and Kate have handled the Press so much better.

The80sweregreat · 16/05/2018 11:01

Diana wanted the fairy tale - turned into a complete nightmare the whole time she was married to him.
He probably was fond of her but couldnt handle the 'not toeing the party line' bit, ie being able to do what he liked!
Bred into captivity is the best line i've read on here, as its true of all of them.

MorganKitten · 16/05/2018 11:02

Because she had an affair with Charles when he was still married to Diana. That made a generation of people hate her and a lot of them still do.

But lets ignore all the affairs Diana had during the marriage, throwing herself down the stairs and being just a tad nuts...

Charles got to marry who he really loved in the end, I don't think he'll step aside for William at all because a) why turn down being king and b) he knows how much stress it'll be and probably thinks William should enjoy some family time first....

Saltcrust · 16/05/2018 11:07

Actually Diana was a model of discretion until her marriage broke down irretrievably, she found she was up against the establishment, and she was poweless to do anything about it. None of it was terribly edifying frankly but Charles published a book through his "friends" too.

The bottom line is: the monarchy are intent on one thing only; and that's the continuation of the line (and while that is the case, God help anyone who gets in the way). Whether the monarchy is a good thing or not for the UK, or whether or not it is a force for good, is up to each individual to judge.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 16/05/2018 11:09

Anne? Older than Diana, much less vulnerable and secure in herself.

Kate? Ah, the girl from an incredibly secure, rock-tight family unit who was carefully shielded from the press as much as possible, and didn't get married to Will until she was pushing 30 and felt able to handle what came with it. This year Kate will be the same age Diana was when she died, won't she?

Diana was 19, had an emotionally difficult childhood, and crucially, became a public figure when tabloid journalism was just getting started. No-one foresaw what it was going to be like.

The80sweregreat · 16/05/2018 11:09

Diana had those affairs as she was craving love - she didnt go about it very well or cover herself with any glory, but most people felt a certain empathy as she was clearly unwell and unloved. Im not condoning affairs, but it does happen and a lot of the reasons is because the other spouse doesnt care. She wasn't always in the right, but neither was he.
it was all really sad i think.

Saltcrust · 16/05/2018 11:24

I agree with BertrandRussell down thread who said,

"I find the rehabilitation of Charles and Camilla in the eyes of the public utterly extraordinary."

It was a masterful piece of PR work by Mark Bolland and team. I would have loved to have seen the invoice for it.

It worked very well. And now we have a new generation of the public who wasnt around in Diana's day. It's
Iike she has (almost) been erased from history; which is probably what the monarchy wanted.

The80sweregreat · 16/05/2018 11:30

salt, i do agree that they like to air brush Diana out of it and would do so more if it wasnt for her sons.

The public may not like having Camilla as Queen or consort or whatever, but we are stuck with it - will be interesting to see what happens when his mum does die though!

Saltcrust · 16/05/2018 11:42

Aye the80sweregreat it will indeed be interesting.

I'm ambivalent about the monarchy (interested in it from historical/continuity pov but live abroad and see it all through a bit of a different prism I suppose). Reading this thread (in order to try and understand the current UK perspective) it's v difficult to know how things will develop ... .

Queenoftheblitz · 16/05/2018 11:57

Diana was treated shabbily by the pair of them.
Yes she cheated when she realised they were still at it.
Camilla gave weekly bulletins to the Sun about the marriage at how Diana was mad. Diana feared her boys would be taken away from her so she fought back by courting the press.
The pair of them are pretty ruthless and i find it embarassing and telling that Camilla goes back to her own house at the weekends because Charles doesnt like her to randchildren.

Queenoftheblitz · 16/05/2018 11:59

Charles doesn't like to be distracted by her grandchildren.
Yes Camilla will be Queen but she doesn't deserve it. Charles works hard but even palace staff call her the laziest woman in England.

BertrandRussell · 16/05/2018 12:17

Charles works hard but even palace staff call her the laziest woman in England."

Love the inside information so many mumsnetters seem to have!

I do wonder how Charles explains that period in his life to his sons. Or if he even tries.

MarshaBradyo · 16/05/2018 12:20

I can’t think of many people who have had the turnaround Camilla has had - she looks like good fun etc moving on from every bad picture going

I don’t think Charles has done so well, he still needs some bolstering

Queenoftheblitz · 16/05/2018 12:24

Bertrand it's not inside info. Just google it.

Butterymuffin · 16/05/2018 12:25

I'd also read that Camilla spends a lot of her time at her own house with her own kids and grandkids, and that she doesn't actually look forward to Charles becoming king as it will curtail her fdreedom considerably. Be careful what you wish for, eh?

Sunnymeg · 16/05/2018 12:26

@The80sweregreat I think the Archbishops make the decision, not the Queen. It's probably thought it would be incredibly insensitive to discuss it whilst HM is still alive, but every so often there is an article in the press about a potential problem, so they have probably mulled it over at some point, behind closed doors.

Queenoftheblitz · 16/05/2018 12:31

Charles was not forced to marry D.
He was dating her but screwing Camilla.
A Sun story broke that he spent the night with D on the royal train. It was Camilla on the train.
Phillip told Charles to either dump Diana or marry her but don't ruin her reputation.
That is not being forced to marry her. That's being told to stop acting like a twat.

BertrandRussell · 16/05/2018 12:35

I think it's very telling that Charles and Camilla both have grandsons called Louis. Doesn't really indicate a close family.

crunchymint · 16/05/2018 12:35

Who cares if Camilla is lazy?
