I googled Backkartoffel mit Dip and the images showed mostly baked potatoes with what I would call fillings or toppings. (Plus a few rogue potato wedges with actual dips.) I think your word dip might have a broader meaning than ours.

Don’t appogise for aging kiddies, it’s perfectly correct
Often Used as a fond informal term
And it’s v rude for someone to comment on grammar in mn posts

Oh my god! Confused, thank you, thank you, thank you!! GrinGrinGrin

Oh, and don't wrap the potato in tin foil. Put it straight in the oven with a bit of salt and olive rubbed on. The crispy skin is the best bit!

Theimpossiblegirl · 15/05/2018 22:10

I always find baked potatoes a bit dry and end up adding extra butter/mayo. Baked potato with a dip sounds like the answer to my food prayers.

Confusedwife1234 Please don't feel embarrassed or self-conscious about subtleties of language, most of us are intelligent and nice enough to not make a big deal of it.

Flowers to apologise for the less nice people.

Rainbunny · 15/05/2018 22:10

I would describe it as "topping" not filling as I would be putting the item on top of the open potato IYSWIM. As for toppings, curry, baked beans and cheese, tuna mayo are classics. I like Tex-Mex food as well so I will use the potato as a base instead of a tortilla or taco and add fajitas or taco seasoned ground turkey with cheese and salsa, shredded lettuce etc...

One thing I've never had mind you is a baked potato with ketchup on? Is that a thing?

ConfusedWife1234 · 15/05/2018 22:11

User but isn‘t it only called fillings or toppings if you bake it with the potatoe?

OP posts:
sirfredfredgeorge · 15/05/2018 22:11

baking small potatoes and dipping them in salsa is great, I do it often, everything with a potato is of course great, and if you've only got little potatoes, and you can eat it without cutlery which is great. Pretty similar to a non-salty Papas Arrugadas, which of course always has dips.

Actually much better than fillings, large jacket potatoes really should have nothing but butter in it.

PurpleDaisies · 15/05/2018 22:12

isn‘t it only called fillings or toppings if you bake it with the
potato?

No, fillings are usually added after. You bake the potato, slice a cross in the top and add a filling.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 15/05/2018 22:12

Yes a filling or topping is baked with the potato
A dip is a savoury accompaniment, such as those delicious recipes you posted

PurpleDaisies · 15/05/2018 22:13

Yes a filling or topping is baked with the potato

It really isn’t!

user1495884620 · 15/05/2018 22:14

I would call it a filling or a topping whether it was cooked with the potato or not.

ConfusedWife1234 · 15/05/2018 22:14

Mummabear Your welcome, if it is not what you searching for please tell me on this Thread. I have got several other recipes, but this is what children typically like best.

Gotta go now, cause I was just waiting for my dh who was on the phone and now he FINALLY finished talking.

Thanks for so many recipe ideas @everybody

Germans really know how to treat a potato. I love potatoes of every sort.

Thank you OP.

It really is Purple,I’d bake a potato and in last few minutes add topping to bake in oven or microwave it

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 15/05/2018 22:18

No silver foil, no no no nooo!

Set (fan) oven to 190 celsius, not fan 210.
Prick a large potato (per person) with a fork a few times each side.
Microwave each spud separately on full, on a plate, for 4-5 minutes.
Salt the microwaved potato on top.
Put all your microwaved salted potatoes in the pre-heated oven straight on the shelf, and bake for 35 minutes.

When skin is crispy, cut into halves or wedges and serve immediately.
Best. Autumn. Dish. EVER.

We like them with butter, salt, freshly ground black pepper, grated cheese, tuna salad, or baked beans and hot dogs, or chili and sour cream.

Germans really know how to treat a potato best quip I’ve read on mn in long time

PurpleDaisies · 15/05/2018 22:19

That’s not “baking it with the potato”, that’s heating up the filling.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 15/05/2018 22:22

Dry Heat in a fan controlled oven to cook, I’d call that baking

PurpleDaisies · 15/05/2018 22:22

You heat beans in the oven? Confused

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 15/05/2018 22:23

Yes,in the potato

Ginkypig · 15/05/2018 22:23

No confusedwife.

Here when you have baked potato it's as simple as

Bake your potatoes in the oven

Put on the plate, Split down the middle and fluff up the potato then add butter (butter is optional)

Then anything you add no matter if it's hot or cold is called a filling or a topping.

For example

Cheese
Beans
Coleslaw
Tuna mayo
Coronation chicken
Onion

Lots of people might add more than one filling at a time for example cheese and beans
Tuna and onion
Cheese and coleslaw

PeterRabbitsBlueCoat · 15/05/2018 22:24

I've just moved to Germany and am struggling to buy baked beans anywhere to have with my baked potatoes. This makes me sad Sad

TheFatkinsDiet · 15/05/2018 22:24

Oh I really want a baked potato after reading this thread.

My dd won’t touch baked potatoes. Or any potatoes really. But I really like hummus in a baked potato. My dd loves hummus, so expect other, non-potato-hating children would like hummus on a baked potato too!

Also cream cheese and maybe smoked salmon, (which my dd weirdly loves Confused).
