To be incapable of getting my mooncup to pop open?

evilharpy · 14/05/2018 22:23

Sorry for another mooncup post, I see there's already one below.

Mine is driving me mad. Once it's in and has popped open it's fine, I love it, it's comfy, it never leaks etc etc. But how the hell are you supposed to get the thing to pop open? I have watched youtube videos, tried different folds (C fold, 7 fold, punch down fold) and it just does not want to open. It's like there's a vacuum that's sucked all the air out so it wants to stay flattened. I end up having to have a good old rummage around in there and kind of twist it around and around until it eventually opens - today one toilet trip took me a good ten minutes and several attempts. If I don't get it open, it won't open by itself and ends up leaking.

Top tips please before I end up falling out with it.

Is there another brand that's easier to get open?

Might be too big. Try a smaller diameter?
Or try this fold
www.sckoon.com/blogs/sckooncup/90171910-how-to-fold-a-menstrual-cup-the-origami-fold
I use this with my Melina soft which doesn't always open.
Or you could try a stiffer cup. I have a Lunette which is great

evilharpy · 14/05/2018 22:32

I do have the bigger size. Maybe I should try the smaller one then.

Is the Lunette definitely firmer? I've just watched a video of it and it doesn't look much different.

I'll try that fold, thanks.

I have to squat my way around the bathroom for a bit. Blush

I've still not got it tbh.

HemanOrSheRa · 14/05/2018 22:37

I use a meluna cup. I do a couple of squats and a few star jumps if it won't pop Grin.

evilharpy · 14/05/2018 22:38

Haha. I've never tried star jumps.

UterusUterusGhali that's an amazing mental image. Also I love your username.

Give it a tug on the stem, just a little one to pull it down a bit. Usually does the trick for me

evilharpy · 14/05/2018 22:40

I don't have a stem Grin I had to chop it off.

I've read that some are softer and more flexible, or that the mooncup softens over time (could try boiling it a few times?)
I've given up with mine, I couldn't get it to unfold either, even when I thought it had it obviously hadn't as it leaked and occasionally 'pinged' inside me sometime later. Found removal nearly impossible too and I don't have the time to faff with it. Apparently they just don't work for some people Confused

LadyMisty · 14/05/2018 22:48

I do what ProudThrilledHappy does, I pull down on it a little bit and it releases. I don't have a stem either, I cut it right off. But once you've pulled down and it's popped open you can push it back up slightly higher if needed.

bridgetreilly · 14/05/2018 22:56

Agree with tugging it down a bit. That usually does the trick for me.

bridgetreilly · 14/05/2018 22:58

Also I just compared my Mooncup and my Lunette. There's not a lot of difference in firmness so far as I can tell, but the Lunette is smaller in diameter.

2kidsnopets · 14/05/2018 23:01

Two options.

  1. a little ky jelly on the rim helps a lot
  2. after inserting bend and touch your toes. While in this position bear down for a few seconds as if you were trying to push the cup out. Stand up and check position of cup - this method works for me 95% of the time and I struggle due to prolapse.
beIindaBlinked · 14/05/2018 23:33

Mine pops open easily.... does this mean my lady place is a bit palatial?

The only time I didn't realise it hadn't popped open took me totally by surprise whilst serving a customer at the till.
All of a sudden it "popped" and made me drop their change!

ThreeJoeys · 14/05/2018 23:50

Use your muscle down there to push it out until the thing comes out a bit. Then pinch it at its base. That works for me. I also took ages to remove it th first time until I found the technique. It is like when you force a pee feeling.

RitaSpanner · 15/05/2018 00:19

Try this OP: slide your finger up between the cup and the back wall of your vagina (the bum side). Push against that wall/muscle.

It works like a treat to pop mine open.

RitaSpanner · 15/05/2018 00:22

Btw, I use the 7-fold with the above popping method, if that's important...

MismatchedPJs · 15/05/2018 01:11

Is it an actual mooncup? My genuine mooncups have been quite stiff and "poppy", it's the other brands I've had trouble with.

Puffycat · 15/05/2018 01:13

Eeeewwwweeewghhhhhh

Puffycat · 15/05/2018 01:14

🤢

evilharpy · 15/05/2018 06:49

threejoeys and ritaspanner tried both of those unsuccessfully, thanks though!

I did try pulling on the tail last night and that worked, hopefully that might be the answer. Although I'm starting to think I need to downsize, does that mean my lady garden is NOT palatial?

PJs yes it's an actual mooncup.

puffycat please fuck off, thanks ever so much.

I had bought a “sports” version of the Me Luna cup, but I don’t know if these are still available. They helped a bit.

You might need a smaller size. I’ve found that I need to do a 7fold to insert the cup and then literally slide my finger inside the fold to force it open. Otherwise my muscles just seem to hold the cup in the 7 fold, no matter what I do - squats, pulling down the tab, etc.

picklemepopcorn · 15/05/2018 08:13

I do a bit of push and pull, with a bit of a twist! Have you checked the two air holes are clear?
