Hi

I’ve had a sore throat for just over a week, today just because I’m a bit weird I shone a light into my throat to see if it was still red - I can see these weird white spots in there ... any idea what it is? Does it warrant a visit to the gp tomorrow? I know they don’t like to give antibiotics unless they’re sure it’s bacterial so if it’s likely to be some virus I’ll leave it :/

They look like tonsil stones.

ICantCopeAnymore · 13/05/2018 20:50

Tonsil stones, not tonsillitis.

Transfer this thread to sporner corner, they’ll sort it for you.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/05/2018 20:51

You've got tonsil stones, op.

Ohmydayslove · 13/05/2018 20:52

What’s sporner corner? Anyone google Karen’s spot? Brilliant

MunchMunch · 13/05/2018 20:52

I get a sore throat with tonsil stone and I would have them out in a jiffy!

They stink to high heaven though so don't squish and sniff. You have been warned!

Well, actually do squish and sniff because you will not believe how smelly they are until you smell one!

SmashedMug · 13/05/2018 20:52

Tonsil stones can definitely cause a sore throats because they sometimes make your tonsils infected and you end up with tonsillitis. I have it regularly unfortunately (stupid giant hole covered tonsils) and it's torture. Get the stones out and you'll feel better soon.

It's gross but as soon as I get ill like that I know there's a stone stuck somewhere out of sight. There always is (bleurgh).

Ohmydayslove · 13/05/2018 20:53

Not tonsil stones though if op felt really ill. More like tonsillitis just getting better?

BellaMaroni · 13/05/2018 20:53

Another vote for the video!! Wink

steff13 · 13/05/2018 20:54

If you've have a fever, I'd go to the doctor tomorrow. Gargle with warm salt water in the meantime. Can you get that spray that numbs your throat there? It helped me the last time I had tonsillitis.

Ohmydayslove · 13/05/2018 20:54

God I want to squish some right now Grin

LemonysSnicket · 13/05/2018 20:54

Either tonsillitis or tonsil stones. Have you felt feverish ( so hot or shivering?) Had difficulty swallowing? Is it worse in the morning or at night?

I’ve had tonsillitis so many bloody times now.

SmashedMug · 13/05/2018 20:54

Not tonsil stones though if op felt really ill.

Definitely can be. If I don't catch mine in time I'll end up with earache, headaches, temperature etc.

userxx · 13/05/2018 20:56

What are tonsil stones? Bits of food stuck or something else?

LemonysSnicket · 13/05/2018 20:56

Agree with PP to gargle with salt water though ( and make it saltier than you’d think about 1-8 ratio salt to water, tepid water not cold or hot )

LemonysSnicket · 13/05/2018 20:57

Oh and paracetamol and ibuprofen (at the same time).

lostfrequencies · 13/05/2018 21:01

User they are bits of food that get caught in the crevices in tonsils and calcify over time. They stink. But are fun to get out Blush

userxx · 13/05/2018 21:04

@lostfrequencies thanks for that. Had tonsillitis loads as a child but never tonsil stones.

nocoolnamesleft · 13/05/2018 21:05

Another vote for gargling with salt water. Oh, and if your throat is really sore, that's why you can buy difflam throat spray over the counter at pharmacies. Great stuff. I always have a bottle in the house ready for the next sore throat.

UpstartCrow · 13/05/2018 21:06

Am I the only one who can't see their tonsils?

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/05/2018 21:08

Bet it’s strep throat. I’m still taking antibiotics for it.

I dreaded swallowing and ended up at the walk in centre bh Monday.

jamoncrumpets · 13/05/2018 21:08

Your tonsils themselves don't look particularly inflamed or infected. Those white things are tonsil stones though. My tonsils are scarred from childhood and I still get them from time to time.

picklemepopcorn · 13/05/2018 21:14

I'd say you've a virus, so your throat is a bit sore which has made the tonsil stones more noticeable.

Gargle with salt water to reduce inflammation, work the back of your mouth with the back of your tongue, they may well pop free on their own.

If you had a bacterial infection it would have got much worse much quicker, I think.

Monsterpage · 13/05/2018 21:21

Am I the only one who went away and watched the vids of these things being squished out?! I had never heard of them but feel suitably 'eww' about them 😁
