Would it be petty to refuse new neighbour’s request?

I live in a cul de sac - the houses are in a semi circle and my house is on the one of the ends.

A few years ago, our next door neighbours knocked down their detached house and replaced it with two semi-detached houses. They live in one of the houses and sold the other.

Consequently, they live in number 9, the other house is 9A and my house is number 10.

The people in 9A have recently moved, and we have some new next door neighbours.

This morning, the woman from 9A came round and asked if we would be willing to change our house number to 11, so they could be number 10. She says that loads of their post and deliveries keep getting sent to number 9, and she just thinks it would be easier.

Would it be unreasonable to say no? I’m used to living at ‘number 10’ - we’ve lived here for years! And I’d have to go through the effort of changing our address, and contacting everyone we know and getting it changed officially and legally.

Or should I just be neighbourly and agree?

just tell her you suffer from imparnumerophobia - a fear of odd numbers and therefore you couldn't possibly live in 11, saves all the explaining and also might keep her at bay in the future!!! 😀

feesh · 14/05/2018 09:34

What a massive twat.

Inkspellme · 14/05/2018 09:35

I saw 11 pages and thought..oh, something interesting/entertaining has happened when op went back to neighbor. Nope, op asked advice - op took the advice and thanked everyone. Then pages of people telling her the exact same thing.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 14/05/2018 10:04

I wouldn’t do that. The faff of changing everything. They need to sort their own issue out not pass it on to you.

SnorkFavour · 14/05/2018 10:39

Why can't they be 11??

On plenty of new estates nowadays, the numbers are all over the place, so although I'm assuming you're in a normal road, posties must be used to odd numbering systems.

Let them be 11. There's no way I'd agree to this.

ralfeesmum · 14/05/2018 11:07

Seems like the postman needs spectacles - or maybe he/she is number dyslexic?

And this new neighbour wants to transfer THEIR problem over to YOU?

No, no, no!

Ohfuckinghellwhatnow · 14/05/2018 12:21

Err NO! You lived there first, you did not cause this 'issue' and they knew about the 9a thing before they bought! Up to them to sort out postal thing. I think its bloody cheeky. Besides, how much work would that cause you and surely is all linked to local councils etc?

isthispetty · 14/05/2018 15:58

I just walked past her house and she’s replaced her 9A number with a number 10!

Just joking Wink - I’m afraid there’s no dramatic update. I told her that we weren't willing to change our number, and suggested that she either become number 11 or get a house name, as everyone here suggested. She was fine with it and we haven’t fallen out!

Lol.

Ariela · 14/05/2018 16:29

She could be 9 1/2, or even 9.5. Several mews type places in Central London are something and a half.

CocoaGin · 14/05/2018 18:28

Thank you @RamblinRosie - very helpful advice.

MumW · 14/05/2018 18:51

How about naming the house "The House Between Nine & Ten"? Leaves no doubt as to which house the post is to be delivered too! Grin

paxillin · 14/05/2018 19:06

House Nine And Three Quarters might sell better than 9A.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 14/05/2018 21:22

Do you have to take a run at the wall to get in pax?

paxillin · 14/05/2018 21:33

That would be even more fun and add a bit to the house price.

ColdCottage · 14/05/2018 22:51

Glad it went smoothly. Most people are reasonable. It's just that the unreasonable ones are more interesting to read/write about so we all get a warped perspective.

I do like a happy ending.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 14/05/2018 23:21

If she's a Harry Potter fan, she could use 9 3/4 (nine and three quarters).

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 14/05/2018 23:23

Uh oh, should have read the thread, sorry!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 15/05/2018 04:53

😂 pax

whatwedointheshadows · 15/05/2018 22:48

@SleepOhHowIMissYou
If she's a Harry Potter fan, she could use 9 3/4 (nine and three quarters).

When I hear about these streets where there are numbers missing if there are actually houses there that have been magically hidden like in Harry Potter.
