Wonder if this is what The a Young are calling everyone these days (like when they kept saying "bless" a few years back) or did she think I was from her gran's generation?

So because one person said that? Everyone’s saying it? Ok then

angryburd · 12/05/2018 16:57

AIBU to what?

CadyHeron · 12/05/2018 17:08

Eh? So somebody called you dear. Big deal? Confused

MelanieCheeks · 12/05/2018 17:10

Need more context. What was the sentence, and accent.

Magpiesarehuge · 12/05/2018 17:12

I can’t get too worked up, a new young guy at my sports club restaurant kept saying darling or love or summat/ i did notice and it maybe irked a little but couldn’t get too annoyed about it enough to say anything - anyway - he has either moved on or learned.

Birdsgottafly · 12/05/2018 17:13

It depends on how it was said.

NotsoLush · 12/05/2018 17:14

angryburd - read my OP and you should get the AIBU

Melanie - she handed me my purchase and said "there you are, my dear". No accent.

Everyone has an accent

NotsoLush · 12/05/2018 17:16

English accent.

Why is it unreasonable that she called you my dear? Would you rather she said ‘there you go dickhead’?! She was polite. I don’t understand the issue here

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/05/2018 17:17

She's was being polite. Would you rather of her stood there chewing gum and gossiping to the cashier next her making out you're an inconvenience and that she's doing you a favor by serving you.

Laiste · 12/05/2018 17:18

I wouldn't think twice about it. Some people use endearments when they speak to strangers some don't. I've experienced it since forever, so not an age thing IME.

Londoners say m'dear a fair bit. And luv. And darlin'.

Midlanders - m'duck, m'lovely ect

Felyne · 12/05/2018 17:18

Maybe she's now kicking herself wondering how that came out of her mouth when she was just trying to politely finish your transaction.
I wouldn't give it any more head space.

UserV · 12/05/2018 17:18

Yep if she called you 'dear,' it means she thinks you look over 65.

Sorry OP.

I still get called 'luv' or 'duck' - so can't look that old yet! Grin

Mybabystolemysanity · 12/05/2018 17:19

I'm in my 30's and I do this. It's completely not intended to be offensive and usually it's for someone I've had a very pleasant interaction with. Maybe I shouldn't? I'm sure she was just being jolly.

OutrageousFlavourLikeFreesias · 12/05/2018 17:21

@catmum26 now I sort of want someone to give me my stuff in a shop and say "there you go dickhead" 😁

bellanotte22 · 12/05/2018 17:23

You're reading way too much into this.

Laiste · 12/05/2018 17:24

Occasionally people say 'madam' to my mum. She loves it. But then she's 80 ... i won't relish the day that begins! Grin

SharronNeedles · 12/05/2018 17:25

Well.... You're not unreasonable to wonder anything, however this makes me wonder how boring your life is if you are somehow offended by someone calling you "dear"

foxyloxy78 · 12/05/2018 17:26

pigsDOfly · 12/05/2018 17:28

My DD's DP calls me 'my love'. I think it's sweet and hope it means he likes me.

If he starts calling me 'dickhead' I'll know he's changed his opinion of me.

RainbowGlitterFairy · 12/05/2018 17:29

My friend calls everyone my dear, including children, I think you are probably just reading too much into it.

NotsoLush · 12/05/2018 17:29

Growing up in the north, I was used to "luv". Don't live there now.

My dear was only ever used by or to old people. It just seemed strange coming out of a young person's mouth.

No need for some of you to get so arsey about my question. I smiled back at her and thanked her. And then thought Confused

The staff in Lush are always so lovely, I'm surprised you found anything to complain about!

Ohyesiam · 12/05/2018 17:30

Yes, it means she sees you as the same as her granny.
