How much wine is to much

beanflicker · 10/05/2018 20:40

Please help settle a debate with Dh.

I've just put the kids to bed (as always at 8:15) waltzed down the stairs and poured myself a large glass of wine. My Dh has pointed out I go through 4 bottles per week.
Help me out ladies is that to much?

I drink a bottle most nights when the kids are in bed so I don't feel it's too much but clearly I am in the minority!

ShaniaTwainAndTheRubyKitKat · 11/05/2018 09:41

I wouldn’t be able to function if I drank wine (or any other alcoholic beverage) every night. I don’t really want to either. The hangover, depression etc. But then I binge drink like once a month when I go on a night out so I can hardly talk I guess.

You're getting drunk every night, surely you must have an inkling that that is too much.

LoniceraJaponica · 11/05/2018 10:28

And if you aren't getting drunk that is even more worrying.

Do you seriously think 7 bottles of wine a week for one person isn't much?
Really?

BodgingThisMumThing · 11/05/2018 10:32

mummaknowsbest you’ve got to be joking?! OP’s 4 bottles a week is way to much, a bottle a night! Christ on a bike Grin how do you function?

megafatCEObaby · 11/05/2018 10:33

4 bottles a week is too much yes, of course. Also, surely thats costing you over £20 a week too?

megafatCEObaby · 11/05/2018 10:39

My friend who is now 30 has a mum who is a ‘functioning’ alcoholic and it’s shit to see their strained relationship over it. You may think youre doing no harm but I doubt 4 will stay at 4, especially if you get used to it.

rumpleyrumple · 11/05/2018 10:47

I love wine 😍
I think I may have a bottle glass tonight

Haha, no seriously I have stopped drinking in the week as I was always tired for school/work and getting chubby. Cutting out drinking in the evening alone I have lost around 9lb in the last three weeks and my beer belly has almost gone. No change to diet at all.
Mornings are easier but I am tempted to take up smoking as nothing is relaxing in the evenings anymore. 🙄

Mercurial123 · 11/05/2018 10:47

The people who are saying the OP isn't drinking a lot are delusional. My dad is a functioning alcoholic and can't give up. He's been diagnosed with dementia and still carries on with my mum having to cope. He's selfish which most alcoholics are.

rumpleyrumple · 11/05/2018 10:50

I will also note that the reason I stopped drinking in the week besides the tiredness is I scared myself a little as the intake was slowly getting more and more and I was feeling like I needed a drink as soon as I got home...

Scabbersley · 11/05/2018 10:54

I would say more than 2 bottles a week is too much on a regular basis, yes. I remember a December about 8 years ago when dh and I drank a bottle between us every evening then a bottle each on a Friday and Saturday - so thats what, 5 bottles a week. We couldn't wait to stop doing it by January, it was a habit and we ended up feeling shit, being fat and grumpy. Dh barely drinks at all - he'll have a glass of wine, very occasionally two, once or twice a week, or a bottle of beer once a week. He's lost weight and looks really fit and healthy.

I love wine and if it didn't make me feel shit I would probably drink more. I can't do all the things I need to do if I drink half a bottle of wine during the week, and I get grumpy. So I sometimes get a craving while I'm in the kitchen cooking but I have a cup of tea instead. When I go up to bed I am always glad I didn't drink.

Queenoftheblitz · 11/05/2018 10:59

Alcoholism creeps up slowly. If you're drinking every day, even if it's just 2 glasses, you're making it an integral part of your day - better to have a binge once a week and no drinking for the other 6 days.

sundowners · 11/05/2018 11:06

I think big issue with enjoying drinking wine is that only decent wine is served in the standard size bottles- the miniture bottle options are generally pretty yuck...then once you have a full larger bottle opened it feels a shame to waste it...

Some ways to overcome this that work for me OP:

Buy mini prosecco instead, pop in freezer so its icey cold, its 1.5 glasses and still very relaxing at end of the day but if that's all you have cold/available- you stop there and its fine.

Buy this amazing cork- Vacu Vin ( available from Amazon) that keeps wine quality amazingly high even 2/3 days after opening- so you drink a few glasses over 3 nights, rather than bottle in 1 night.

Have set days of week you definitely don't drink- for me its generally Tues/Weds/Thurs and it makes looking forward to my bottle on a Friday worth waiting for and more special.

Scabbersley · 11/05/2018 11:08

Financially it was costing a lot.

Instead of buying whatever's on offer in Tescos, I now buy my one or two bottles from a local, lovely, wine merchants. It feels much more grown up and treaty!

RestingBitchFaced · 11/05/2018 11:13

I could easily drink that in a week, seems pretty average to me. If you feel like it's too much though, them have a few nights off in the week

Mercurial123 · 11/05/2018 11:16

Average amount no it isn't unless you have a problem.

sundowners · 11/05/2018 11:16

Scabbersley agree with this 100%. Have an amazing Majestic nearby, the staff truly LOVE wine and get so excited by it and I love their wine tasting bar ... lovely wine in gorgeous bottles (!) feels so much more decadent/a treat than caning it with cheap vinegar from supermarket. That said do love Co-Op for wine too.

LoniceraJaponica · 11/05/2018 11:17

"then once you have a full larger bottle opened it feels a shame to waste it..."

Wine actually keeps pretty well for another day you know.
4 bottles a week is pretty average for people who drink a fair amount, but in the grand scheme of things it is too much.

I love wine BTW, and could feel my consumption creeping up, so now I only drink it at weekends, or during the week on holiday.

sundowners · 11/05/2018 11:18

LoniceraJaponica have to disagree on that if we are talking white wine- anything past 1/2 a day in fridge and you definitely notice it. Red- fine.

MathsScience · 11/05/2018 12:08

I think there is too much of a culture of drinking in the UK these days

^ Agree with Fatted.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 11/05/2018 12:10

In many cases, people with alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) don't have any noticeable symptoms until their liver is badly damaged. NHS

This is the problem, people think they're fine until they're not.

MathsScience · 11/05/2018 12:16

Am surprised that some people drink a bottle or nearly a bottle of wine every night and think its OK. I'm not morally outraged or anything. Just pretty surprised.

Cheto · 11/05/2018 12:20

I drink about 3 bottles a week ... and never 2 nights in a row
Could u maybe add a soda top to your glasses (2 thirds wine 1 third soda ? Just eeks the bottle out a bit )

UnicornRainbowColours · 11/05/2018 12:32

That’s a lot..it’s hard to judge as I don’t drink much wine I prefer a gin and tonic but if I do it’s Usually a glass maybe too.

MismatchedStripySocks · 11/05/2018 12:44

Way too much. I drink on average twice a month but could easily go two months without a drink. That’s not deliberate, i’ve Just never been much of a drinker even on nights out.
