How much wine is to much

beanflicker · 10/05/2018 20:40

Please help settle a debate with Dh.

I've just put the kids to bed (as always at 8:15) waltzed down the stairs and poured myself a large glass of wine. My Dh has pointed out I go through 4 bottles per week.
Help me out ladies is that to much?

For me personally that would be too much Yes.

hampsteadholly · 10/05/2018 20:51

I have one bottle a week. Wine

I use a small glass Grin

user2085372673 · 10/05/2018 20:51

I think it’s rather a lot. Easily done though!

I really think you can just get into bad habits. Try and drink only Thurs, Fri and Sat and you’ll start to enjoy the week days a lot more.

Hunter007 · 10/05/2018 20:51

It's a lot but I probably drink similar amounts. We all need our vices. I have two or three days alcohol free but can easily polish off a bottle on the other nights

MrsJBaptiste · 10/05/2018 20:54

I like a drink as much as the next person but 4 bottles of wine every week is a lot. If we're not doing anything special at the weekend then I'll get through a bottle on Friday and another on Saturday night. Pretty normal for my friends.

If we're out then I'll have far too much prosecco, cocktails and gin but luckily this kind of drinking isn't a weekly event!

elderflowerandrose · 10/05/2018 20:54

On the continent this would be incredibly average.

Eatmycheese · 10/05/2018 20:55

I suspect there are millions of people drink four bottles of wine or the equivalent a week

NC4Now · 10/05/2018 20:56

I like a drink. Quite a lot of drinks, really. But yes, that’s too much.

Wine is just so flipping more-ish though, isn’t it? Could you switch to G&T or something?

Grobagsforever · 10/05/2018 20:56

@Hunter007 - a bottle in a night? Don't you feel awful the next day?

@beanflicker - yeah four bottles is too much. It's unhealthy, And I say that as someone who drinks three and is desperately trying to cut down

adaline · 10/05/2018 20:59

It really surprises me how much some people drink when I read threads like this.

I guess it just shows how easily your habits become the norm to you! I've never been a big drinker and don't t socialise with any either, so to me one or two drinks a week maximum is normal.

But if everyone you know drinks on w daily basis, it's easy to think of that as normal too.

LoniceraJaponica · 10/05/2018 21:09

"It's too much in theory, but in my life experience many people drink this amount"

What other people drink is irrelevant. It is too much. If other people drink that much then they are also drinking too much. Normalising excess whether it is food, drink or weight doesn't make it right.

4 bottles of wine a week is approximately 36 units - 22 units a week more than the recommended amount. If you are drinking this much every week then you seriously need to cut down.

Chewbecca · 10/05/2018 21:09

I can see how it is easy to drink that much and some weeks I probably do if I happen to have a glut of nights out.

Are you drinking a bit ever day? If so, my best advice would be to cut it out altogether on at least 3, preferably 4-5 days, save it for the weekend or a night out.

PumpkinPie2016 · 10/05/2018 21:10

I would say that's too much - do you not feel rough drinking that much? Not to mention the cost!

I probably have 1 drink on a Fri and Sat night, if that. Sometimes it can be a glass of wine or prosecco or sometimes a small can of ale.

I'm a lightweight though and if I drunk half a bottle of wine a night (which is roughly 4 bottles per week) I'd be under the table Blush

BadTasteFlump · 10/05/2018 21:11

From a health pov, yes it's way too much, as others have said.

As an aside though - I never understand how anybody can drink a lot of wine - I love the taste of it but after literally one glass I am feeling dodgy and just want to sleep. I'm fine with G&T though Smile I actually suspect I could be allergic - is that a thing?

starlightmeteorite · 10/05/2018 21:13

Your DH is right, it is too much. You are probably alcohol dependent. Try and go a few nights without alcohol. If you can't you have a problem.

Bluntness100 · 10/05/2018 21:14

Yes, you're drinking too much, can you cut down or is it w struggle for you and the problem is deeper?

SalsaLala · 10/05/2018 21:16

Too much I think personally. I have probably one bottle total over the course of a weekend. Rarely drink in the week unless it’s a special occasion.

pangolina · 10/05/2018 21:17

It's a lot to me. How do you feel? Tipsy? Drunk? Relaxed? Is there a hangover next day? Could you do without it?

TalkFastThinkSlow · 10/05/2018 21:18

Four on your own?!

Yes, too much Confused

dangermouseisace · 10/05/2018 21:19

woah yes that is too much. Of course you'll get people on here saying that it isn't, and that lots of people have that much. But lots of people in the UK also have liver problems, pancreatitis, cancer...etc...but the guideline of 14 units max a week is far less than what you are having- you're probably having about 44 units a week. If you google Drinkulator you can get all sorts of info and a questionairre. They've got statisticical info re units and risk...worth a read.

Highhorse1981 · 10/05/2018 21:20

That is a lot

And fact that your husband thinks it’s a lot would indicate perhaps that it’s not quite so harmless as you seem to think it is

DeputyBrennan · 10/05/2018 21:20

I would happily drink a strong cider (~7-8%, so 3.5-4 units) every night if it didn't make my stomach bloated the next morning - I'm skinny and it's enough to make me feel pretty tipsy for a good couple of hours, but not enough to cause any noticeable hangover. That feeling of relaxation and slight tipsiness is really very appealing to me, but I don't feel it's a good idea to make it a daily habit for that very reason, so I limit myself to drinking only 3 nights per week.

I'd consider 4 bottles of wine per week a lot, yes. If you feel the need to have a large glass of wine every night, I think it'd be good for you to think about cutting down.

wishingitwasfriday · 10/05/2018 21:22

I've cut down to a couple of glasses a week. I've lost weight and have much more energy, sleep better etc. It took a while to get out of the habit but has been worth it. Also saved me £80-100 a month!

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 10/05/2018 21:26

I thought it would be common knowledge that the max recommended amount is 14 units or for wine 1.5 bottles a week.

I'd rather keep my £30 pounds a week, £1500 a year.

If you pack it in you'll feel miles better, sleep better, look better, get more done and actually remember having a good time properly.

And cut your risk of cancer, liver disease, dementia, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, pancreatitis, infections, gout, diabetes.

Well you did ask.

FriendlyOcelot · 10/05/2018 21:28

Yes it is too much... are you drinking all four bottles to yourself or is your dh allowed any of it? Wink
