Influencer ethics on Instagram

MadameGrizzly · 09/05/2018 21:56

Continuing the discussion on whether influencing on Instagram is an ethical business model, particularly around the disclosure of advertising and the over exposure of children.

AIBU to think it isn't a sustainable career unless the influencer is scrupulously ethical?

I don’t find it laughable I find it really hurtful.

I support NB campaign, of course we can’t control what people post about me and others anonymously that’s imposisble but I think mumsnet need to act more appropriately when these new threads pop up. The same way Instagram does, they block troll accounts from commenting eg. I dont know what sock puppets are?

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 14/05/2018 17:00

What is Natasha Baillie actually asking to happen? She doesn't have any identifiable outcomes and the only way to ensure that everyone is "kind" which is very subjective anyway, let alone to NB standards would be for NB to moderate every single thread and be the ultimate arbiter of that

Using her argument that apparently people are suicidial due to MN threads and that is based solely on those threads rather than any underlying condition (which shows a total lack of understanding of mental health issues), how would NB deal with individuals who felt suicidal and killed themselves because they had a post removed. Or would that be OK?

PavlovaPrincess · 14/05/2018 17:01

Yes but what is NB saying? Is it about so called 'bullying' (i.e having a differing opinion) about Influencers? Is is the trans issue? Is it anyone who isn't 'being kind'? Is it 'mum shaming' (whatever the fuck that means)?

Because no one seem to know, including Natasha.

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2018 17:01

I would include young children in that too

Anya would you ever think ok both let’s stop with the children pics altogether?

NeverWas · 14/05/2018 17:02

But there was moderation. Are you asking for any thread that mentions you, even if not by name, is removed?

anyalovesrose · 14/05/2018 17:08

Sorry trying to respond to all your questions.

Yes thats something we’ve discussed re the kids and posting. When someone worked out what school my children go to based on a flicker of their blazer in the background of one of Simon’s stories that’s when I took some proper action, it really freaked me out.

The reason I felt it wasn’t wise to have it taken down was I felt it would only anger people and fuel more threads so I remained silent and never mentioned it until now. Ironically more and more threads have been started regardless so it wouldn’t have made a difference.

Have those of you who are on iG asked Natasha directly what her aim of the campaign is?

Reboot · 14/05/2018 17:08

Mumsnet has a troll policy and I think they said the sock puppet(s) on the thread that was deleted was banned.

Bakingnovice · 14/05/2018 17:11

I used to follow you a while back but wad blocked when the whole Danielle bullying thing happened and I asked what had gone on. I'm happy to stay blocked but wondered why Insta mums moderate so heavily (excepting MP here who is honest and open)? What purpose does it serve to block the demographic your ads are aimed at?

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2018 17:14

When I say right to privacy I don’t mean school blazers etc

I mean not consenting to loads of images in their early years.

My dc recently learnt at school that someone can’t post a photo online without their ok, even me. Which is a great direction given sm / mh and autonomy

Would you ever stop completely?

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 14/05/2018 17:16

Have those of you who are on iG asked Natasha directly what her aim of the campaign is?

We don't need to. You are here now and support it. So you must know the aims of it? Confused

NeverWas · 14/05/2018 17:17

Anyarose you're going to have to toughen up if you want to pursue being a writer/author. You should start engaging with people on Twitter instead of the echo chamber of your IG page.

@Bakingnovice

Were you the person who called me a c*!?

Anyone who trolls me and insults me on dms from fake accounts IMO opinion don’t deserve to be able to see my page. Why should I allow that sort of behaviour into my life it’s a nasty underbelly of the internet. I don’t delete comments on my posts if that’s what you mean?

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2018 17:22

FlyingBird that made me laugh

BinG0wings123 · 14/05/2018 17:25

@anyalovesrose I’m just interested to know what NB told you the point of her campaign was?

Because it’s the ‘being kind’ thing that I found laughable.

anyalovesrose · 14/05/2018 17:25

@Flyingbird

I had no idea what that term meant until now, so thanks for the clarity.

I guess you’re right I’ll toughen up and accept the spiky comments although it still doesn’t feel great reading stuff about yourself which is often not even true.

Late for nursery pick up got to dash. I’ve actully enjoyed this thread you’re not a bad bunch and there are some very articulate commenters on here. As you were

BinG0wings123 · 14/05/2018 17:26

And if MN asked you if you wanted the threads removed, the campaign is null and void.

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2018 17:27

No answer on the images

There never is Confused

Bakingnovice · 14/05/2018 17:29

Anya- I have never and will never use the c word. Thanks. How preposterous to assume I did that!

jamoncrumpets · 14/05/2018 17:33

Good point BinG0 - campaign over!

underestimation · 14/05/2018 17:34

I haven't read this whole thread (will get to it this evening I hope) but I am really interested in this whole issue. Anyway, I am going to make a totally and entirely flippant point about DMBL40 which may be entirely off the point. She is currently on a cruise. It's a bit confusing as she has said this is not a work trip but she is loading lots of stories. Anyway, this has confirmed to me that I will NEVER go on a cruise under any circumstances as it looks like my idea of hell. So it has been extremely influential but perhaps not in the way anticipated. I am sorry again if this thread is mainly about kids and ethics!

NeverWas · 14/05/2018 17:35

FlyingBird that made me laugh too!

MessyBun247 · 14/05/2018 17:41

There’s 2 insta-mums on the same cruise ship today, one has put #ad, the other one hasn’t. Hmmm.

MadameGrizzly · 14/05/2018 17:42

The potty photo was appalling and served no purpose other than attention seeking.
