What’s actually wrong with ASDA?

I never knew that it was seen as “low end” until recently, escalated by the merger news. I think they have nice own brand stuff, are good value, and their stores are well presented with lots of variety . I find the George clothing nice as well and it doesn’t rip or bobble as much as some of the other supermarket brand clothes.

Is the view that it’s chavvy a southern thing?

Our local Asda is awful, just rammed, poor choice, nearly all self serve tills, not noticeably cheaper. There are 2 Sainsbury's nearby - we much much prefer one over the other.

The nice one is a much much newer store better layout and quieter so far less stressful!

RandomMess · 09/05/2018 20:25

Yeah the car parks at the 2 stores we dislike are utterly manic and badly designed...

Trethew · 09/05/2018 20:26

Ready meals are the poorest quality of any supermarket I know

Stopitjuststopit2018 · 09/05/2018 20:27

I agree that buying fruit and veg from most places can be hit and miss and that you do need to check dates carefully no matter where you get it from. I see loads of people just picking up the very top item and not inspecting it in the slightest , whereas I’ll always lift the tray to see what the dates are underneath!

I’m not sure i found the meat to be of less quality though, and I do wonder if some of it is just hearsay and bad press. I have a friend who supplies a certain product to food manufacturers and a few months ago she met with a chicken factory who said that they supplied the exact same chicken to Tesco, M&S, Waitrose and Lidl. Obviously individually branded in their respective supermarket packaging. I think this goes on a lot

I don't like it much. Poor selection, esp of fruit and veg at the one near me. I think the kids clothes, particularly school uniforms are quite decent though, better than Sainsbury.

Creambun2 · 09/05/2018 20:28

Asda is horrible - the supermarket of choice for those who think shopping in PJs or a Onesie is a good choice. Also those who let their children use the store as a playground or ride around on scooters etc.

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 09/05/2018 20:28

Asda is pretty rough here. Tracksuits galore.

MiddleagedManic · 09/05/2018 20:29

Yeah, it's cheap. Around here though it just happens to be sited in a not so nice area, so the customers are less....ermmm...classy than the Sainsbury that is in a very naice area.

I don't like Asda due to their pricing being cheeky if you don't pay attention and considering our local clientele I'm always suspicious they are doing it to take advantage of those who are too trusting. There is always one example where if you buy the smaller one it is a lot cheaper than the bigger one that looks like it should be better value and looks a good price until you read the price per kg or per item, or whatever. Only supermarket I find that issue with.

Allreadygone · 09/05/2018 20:30

My comment about ready meals, from a while ago is the feeling and actual experience of the 'best cuts of meat' went into something else, so bits of gristle are expected. Use of industrial grease rather than butter and general 'cheapness'. Shop with your eyes open and it is not really a problem.
Although not suggesting there is horse meat but what is wrong with it as long as it was a good horse and it tells you it was horse?

Messyone · 09/05/2018 20:30

Asda is ok if you shop in person they have good deals on for baby wipes etc. I haven't had a great experience shopping online with them they always do poor substitutions.

Petitepamplemousse · 09/05/2018 20:31

It’s fine! Apart from the lurid green.

Riversleep · 09/05/2018 20:31

My DH always complains if I go to Asda. I must admit the fresh fruit and veg is ropey. We have a massive one near us with self service conveyor belts and hardly any manned counters. I do like their non food selection though. I go to Aldi for food. The quality is better, it's smaller and easier to go round. They have stolen Asdas MO and do it better.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 09/05/2018 20:31

Our old Asda was actually better quality than the Waitrose!

WeWere0nABreak · 09/05/2018 20:31

We don't have one anywhere near us. But I went to the one in Newquay on a Cornwall holiday.... it was a bit like a jumble sale. The branded stuff was the same, but the layout etc just looked messy/shabby. I wouldn't rush back (but then I mostly shop at m&s and Waitrose as that's what's near our house, so that's what I'm used to, and Asda doesn't market itself as a Waitrose or an m&s)

Zoflorabore · 09/05/2018 20:32

I live about ten mins from one of the largest in the uk, it's a double decker one and is vast.
I've never really thought much about the class aspect of it but it does seem different to the huge Tesco a mile or two away.

Asda school uniform is pretty good and I like their knickers Blush

TheRoadLessRocky · 09/05/2018 20:32

We have a huge Asda here and I like it but when I visit some others that are much smaller, I understand the criticisms of poor choice and quality. I don't like the kids clothes much - the sizing is small and the colours are rubbish. Get the odd top for me but they don't last.

I think Tesco is very much below Asda. I go to Sainsburys for nicer things and their clothes, Morrisons for top-up shops, Asda and Aldi for my main shop. I only go to Tesco if none of those, or Lidl, are available.

WindyWednesday · 09/05/2018 20:34

In my local town. Asda and Sainsburys are near each other.

Asda has a beefy security guard on the door in the day. The customers are rough looking and it’s a scary place.

Sainsburys is like a normal shop. No security guard looming. I’m sure they have them, I’ve not actually seen them. I feel safer there.

Might be my area though.

starzig · 09/05/2018 20:34

I think it seems to focus all it's rollbacks on junk food which is maybe why it's seen as lower class.

weebarra · 09/05/2018 20:35

I don't shop there because I hate Walmart. I'm not a snob, I shop in mainly Morrisons, Lidl and Co-op.

MsRinky · 09/05/2018 20:35

I go to Asda every couple of weeks because it is the only place in my southern town that stocks Longley Farm cottage cheese, and I also love the George short fit skinny jeans. However, if you go after 10am, it is guaranteed to be full of aggressive types with dodgy tattoos and too much flesh on show screaming at their kids. Grim. Don't get me wrong, the entitled wankers who ignore the one way signs in the Waitrose car park also piss me off, but are less abrasive.

SamHeughansLeftEyebrow · 09/05/2018 20:36

I don't like it, so I don't shop there. Others won't like where I shop.

The nearest one to me would also involve passing at least one Waitrose, M&S, Tesco, Lidl, Aldi and Sainsbury's. Listed in order of proximity to home, so I am massively unlikely to need to go there.

Racecardriver · 09/05/2018 20:37

I like their clothing. My favorite pair of socks that had lasted five years is from there. But the customer service is very shoddy. Most of the customers are unpleasant and rude in my local Asda. And they frequently run out of stock in my local one, basic stuff like broccoli. They also don't have everything I want. Consequently I don't shop there very often. I would use the online servuce of it was more reliable but every single time I order something online something goes wrong.

sprinklesandsauce · 09/05/2018 20:38

I’ll shop anywhere but ASDA is definitely branded lower than Sainsbury’s so I was surprised by the merger. I often hear people say they can’t afford Sainsbury’s and that they shop in Asda. Our local one certainly has a certain type of customer that you wouldn’t see in Sainsbury’s , because of the prices.

I like Lidl, Aldi, Asda, Morrison’s, but due to living rurally get deliveries from Sainsbury’s or Tesco. I stopped using Asda after too many late deliveries.

I buy school uniform from Asda and Sainsbury’s.

Flaskfan · 09/05/2018 20:39

They make massive pizzas for 4.50. Dh always gets lots of toppings cos he flirts with the elderly lady on the pizza stand.

Clothes are ok, but I wish they'd cater for tall people with waists.

FreeMantle · 09/05/2018 20:41

Cheap, nasty, poor quality pigswill. I would rather buy half as much in Waitrose or M&S.
Their MO seems to be making shite versions of branded products in similar packaging.

Tosh.
Waitrose is the worse for this. Rock hard baked beans ( and the only time I've had black bits), rank fake carbonara sauce and disgusting humous. Yet their reputation precedes them.
