What’s actually wrong with ASDA?

I never knew that it was seen as “low end” until recently, escalated by the merger news. I think they have nice own brand stuff, are good value, and their stores are well presented with lots of variety . I find the George clothing nice as well and it doesn’t rip or bobble as much as some of the other supermarket brand clothes.

Is the view that it’s chavvy a southern thing?

@StopBeingNosey

“Why would it be a southern thing? “

In the recent merger news I heard a report on the radio talking about how Sainsbury’s customers were dismayed, and they speculated whether the annoyed customers are primarily from down south because apparently the majority of Asda’s are in the Midlands or up North

@pattistanger I’m in the east midlands. Asda has 2 stores in my city, both superstores and one was the first “Walmart” upgrade in the country. That’s why I’m confused, they are seen as respectable here. Tesco are the ones seen to be a bit “less”

Horsemeat lasagne was Tesco wasn't it?

ErrolTheDragon · 09/05/2018 20:12

It may depend where you are - the big one near me is good, but I've been in some smaller ones elsewhere which weren't. I prefer Sainsbury's (there are a few things there I really like which Asda doesn't stock) but our Asda is nearer and it's good for a regular shop. Better than Morrison's.

DH prefers a combination of Waitrose and Aldi, or sometimes Booths. Oddly we seem to have everything except Tesco within range.

borntobequiet · 09/05/2018 20:14

Nothing, really. Unless you think there is something wrong with Walmart, which is reasonable.

ScreamingValenta · 09/05/2018 20:14

Ours has more downmarket decor than Sainsbury's and Tesco's - it's just a big metal shell. However, Asda's curries beat the others hands down, so I go there once a fortnight to fill the freezer.

megletthesecond · 09/05/2018 20:14

They only seem to promote junk when I'm in there.
It wasn't cheaper for own brand products when I looked and they had less choice. no capers and fewer olives.

I pop in occasionally to top up but prefer Morrisons for cheap and cheerful shopping .(Hampshire FWIW).

Bunbunbunny · 09/05/2018 20:14

Hate it with a passion now, used to shop there then when it was bought out by WALMart they just stuffed it full of crap! The big one in Croydon used to be lovely but they squeezed in more shelving and it’s like a jumble sale. I can’t last more than five minutes in there now. Clapham Junction is probably the worst store at weekends, they should reduce the number of items in store

Paddingtonthebear · 09/05/2018 20:15

It’s good for cheap clothes, shoes, uniform etc. Good for branded groceries and they do lots of deals and offers.

Utter crap for meat and fresh veg and fruit though!

lifechangesforever · 09/05/2018 20:15

I don't think you can judge the quality of Asda's stuff and the stores themselves against the likes of Sainsbury's and even Morrison's so yes, it is 'budget range' of the big four but there's nothing wrong with it as such. I regularly shop there myself but more for the George stuff than the food.

DwangelaForever · 09/05/2018 20:15

Also I would rank super markets here as:

M&S
Sainsbury's
Tesco's
Lidl
Asda
Iceland

(We don't have Waitrose Aldi or Morrison's in Northern Ireland)

I would rank Asda below lidl as even though Lidl is cheap and own brand, their fruit and meat is of high quality compared to ASDA. And Iceland because the quality of their frozen stuff is pants.

In my mind the co-op isn't really a supermarket, just like a glorified shop 🤔

pointythings · 09/05/2018 20:16

I've recently changed to an ALDI/ASDA combo for our weekly shop - am newly single and we need to cut costs. I've been pleasantly surprised. Good Free From and vegetarian ranges, fruit and veg not quite as good as Sainsburys but ok if you pick carefully. There are some things I still go to Tesco and Sainsburys for, but on the whole we don't notice the difference.

chocolatesun · 09/05/2018 20:18

I don’t shop there but have been given lots of George kids’ clothes and they’re great.

fabulousfrumpyfeet · 09/05/2018 20:18

I think their kids clothes are some of the best in the lower price range, including Sainsbury's. I always manage to find what need.

Rudgie47 · 09/05/2018 20:19

In all supermarkets you have to choose your fruit and veg very wisely.Really have a good look at it and at the date.
Even in M and S I've seen fruit going off so its not just Asda.I dont eat meat so I cant comment on it. However everything else I've had from there has been fine, no problems.

jarhead123 · 09/05/2018 20:19

It depends where your local one is.

The Leamington Spa one is full of societys rejects lol

IvorHughJarrs · 09/05/2018 20:21

The Asda near me is in a rather rough area whereas the Sainsburys is in a better area, if that is replicated in other areas, maybe that is where the snobbery comes from.

Asda has far better clothes, a wider range of products and doesn't have anything like the "out of stocks" Sainsburys has.
I don't buy meat there as there is a good butchers on the way home but the fruit and veg is good unlike the local Aldi and Lidl where I swear it goes off on the way home!

MigGril · 09/05/2018 20:21

Hum well I agree with another poster on hear used to love ASDA shopped there loads when I lived up North. Was very excited when they decided to build one in our town down South. Was majorly disappointed when it opened. Wal-Mart ruined Asda it's not the stored I loved. Only thing I do buy is cheap children's clothes.

HolyMountain · 09/05/2018 20:22

I’m currently doing Aldi shops weekly , much better than Asda for a lot of stuff but Asda offers cheap and more selection so I end up there to top up.

It’s definitely cheaper so gets a broader range of shoppers from everywhere.

I like it a lot.

paxillin · 09/05/2018 20:22

It is a supermarket which is much like all other supermarkets. Some class snobs worry their neighbours will downgrade them a class notch if they are caught with ASDA bags.

Smeddum · 09/05/2018 20:22

These threads are always a fairly depressing insight into snobbery.

I shop at Asda, Morrisons or Tesco. I don’t really think about what level of posh/not they are. I just get what I need.

NewYearNewMe18 · 09/05/2018 20:22

I switch between Asda and Morrisons (Londoner), they are lower end than Sainsburys.

We all know how it goes:

Waitrose
Sainsbury/Tesco
Morrison's/Asda
Lidl/Aldi

Sainsbury and Asda do not have the same customer base.

The80sweregreat · 09/05/2018 20:23

Nothing - it’s a good supermarket.
Shame our local one is only small and the big one too far to drive too!

Madbengalmum · 09/05/2018 20:24

Really dislike Asda, seems to just be large quantities of very basic food products, very little choice and poor quality.

Mum2jenny · 09/05/2018 20:24

Loathe most Asda car parks I've visited, so on that basis I avoid if possible.
