What’s actually wrong with ASDA?

I never knew that it was seen as “low end” until recently, escalated by the merger news. I think they have nice own brand stuff, are good value, and their stores are well presented with lots of variety . I find the George clothing nice as well and it doesn’t rip or bobble as much as some of the other supermarket brand clothes.

Is the view that it’s chavvy a southern thing?

Our local Asda is new, well-orgainised and full of nice things. Waitrose on the other hand is full of cardboard boxes, scruffy looking and smells of fish. I like Tesco the most.

The80sweregreat · 09/05/2018 21:16

They all do different things for each time in our lives I think. All bring something to the party. I do like a supermarket! Whoever they are!

DrDreReturns · 09/05/2018 21:17

They do the best fresh fish of any supermarket imo.

The80sweregreat · 09/05/2018 21:19

Carrefour is good for fish! So much fish.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 09/05/2018 21:19

Many of the products both own brand and named brand regardless of store are ll made in the same factory, it's just the packaging that is different. Our local Asda has within a mile to a mile and a half a Sainsburys, Lidl, Aldi, Iceland, Farm foods, 2 Tesco express, and a CO-OP. within 3 miles there is also Morrisons and M&S. Yet it takes £i.2 million every week, and the average spend per transaction is approx £12. So I think it's fair to say it's pretty popular.

I hate supermarket snobbery and, they be honest, I’m yet to see much difference in quality of food wherever I shop.

Asda is the closest supermarket to me by quite a distance (semi rural) and as I pass on the school run, I go all the time. The food is good, it’s cheap and the staff are really fab. As others have said, George Kids clothes are great.

I started a new job 6 months ago and there’s a Sainsbury’s next door so have been popping in there sometimes. The food is exactly the same, it just costs twice as much Confused

The80sweregreat · 09/05/2018 21:21

Waitrose has the best aisles! So wide and not stacked high with stuff. I can breath!

WeWere0nABreak · 09/05/2018 21:21

cheshiremama89 - almost the same (purely personal) rankings... then again, from your username, I am wondering if we live not a million miles apart!

DrDreReturns · 09/05/2018 21:23

Clearly you haven't visited the Bromsgrove Waitrose The80sweregreat!

PlumsGalore · 09/05/2018 21:23

Our Waitrose has the best aisles! Mind you I did go to the Sudbury one once and that had bigger aisles! I was in awe.

Justanotherlurker · 09/05/2018 21:25

How is this supermarket snobbery going to play out now that Sainsburys and Asda are merging..

Does Asda come up an imaginary class rating or Sainsburys go down a couple?

CaptainCarp · 09/05/2018 21:26

I do my weekly shop at asda but find the dates on so much is either tomorrow or the next day which is poor. Also quality of the fruit & the veg is rubbish - most stuff goes mouldy before the bb date.
I have also done my shop in sainsburys & spent £5 extra but I can throw a lot less out... unfortunately Asda is much more convenient.
So I compromise & buy my fruit in 1 of the others in my lunch break.

The80sweregreat · 09/05/2018 21:26

Asdsainsbury - I can’t see it catching on

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 09/05/2018 21:27

I do my big monthly online shop at Asda, they are by far the cheapest of the supermarkets, certainly they have the best offers on beers & wine which makes up the bulk of my shop
Supermarket snobbery is pretty tiresome tbh, what twat would honestly call it chavsda? Hmm

Oakmaiden · 09/05/2018 21:28

I dislike Asda on principle because of the whole Walmart connection.

That said, Tesco and Sainsbury are closest to me, so I tend to shop there. And occasionally Iceland or Farmfoods. Asda is miles away.

bookmum08 · 09/05/2018 21:28

@haribols Iceland was actually the only major supermarket NOT to have been involved with the horsemeat scandal.

qu1rky · 09/05/2018 21:28

A worker at Asda that was local to me prior to moving, went to court (and jail if I remember correctly) for unwrapping chickens, licking them and then re-wrapping them. The dirty bugger!!

Besides that, Asda never looks clean.
After the chicken licking incident, I will no longer shop there.

The80sweregreat · 09/05/2018 21:29

Broom - I did laugh at your beer and wine comment! It does tend to appear in my trolley by osmosis. Nothing to do with me or dh

BrightYellowDaffodil · 09/05/2018 21:30

I'll pop in if I'm going past, depending on what it is I'm after - a bag of sugar is a bag of sugar regardless.

They can be a bit, erm, interesting on the clientele front - I once witnessed a full on fist fight between two girls at the cigarette counter. You don't get that sort of thing in Waitrose

I'm fortunate in that I'm near pretty much every supermarket you could want. For preference, I buy some in Aldi (I'm quite partial to their wine...) but I do love good old Waitrose for everything else.

The80sweregreat · 09/05/2018 21:30

Iceland so cheap tea and bread/ milk.
I get about!

The80sweregreat · 09/05/2018 21:32

Actually my dads cost cutter near him has bargains galore! The smaller places surprise you some times.

Justanotherlurker · 09/05/2018 21:33

I would be more worried about them catching salmonella to be honest.

It reminds me of a story of a very naice booths that had a phantom shitter, after months and months of of investigations, horrified local paper reporting it turned out to be the store manager Grin
