To get the rage from glass chopping boards

anothergreentomato · 09/05/2018 18:13

Lighthearted and inspired by a different thread on chopping boards (I know, two on one day, remain calm!). But glass chopping boards, why? They make a weird scraping noise, or are just plain loud when you cut anything on them, especially the textured ones. Why do they exist? AIBU?

YANBU. They’re the work of the devil. No need!!!

Growingboys · 09/05/2018 18:15

YANBU

possumgoddess · 09/05/2018 18:15

They blunt all your knives as well. Shouldn't be allowed.

bluerunningshoes · 09/05/2018 18:15

yanbu
they blunt knifes as well
ordinary wooden board(s) here

SheSparkles · 09/05/2018 18:16

I HATE them! Screechy slippy shitty things that they are

Mammalamb · 09/05/2018 18:17

Yanbu!!! Hate them

Onesmallstepforaman · 09/05/2018 18:18

They are made designed by knife sharpener manufacturers as they blunt any knife . Get wooden ones 😊

Reboot · 09/05/2018 18:20

YANBU we were bought one as a present. Pointless. Mind you I also hate our massive wooden chopping board too as you need a forklift to pick it up.

LifeBeginsAtGin · 09/05/2018 18:23

That's why we have a wooden one. Use the class on for raw meat.

Needmorehands · 09/05/2018 18:33

I accused a kitchen designer of having a knife sharpening business on the side as so many of the sinks he was offering came with glass chopping boards.
Glass boards blunt your knives! Don't do it!
They're OK as 'surface prtectors' if you're precious about sticky knives form kids making jam toast or whatever, but never for cutting on

Shmithecat · 09/05/2018 18:35

Yanbu. Noisy clattery horrid things.

Rainydaydog · 09/05/2018 18:37

I've answered on the other chopping board thread so might as well get in on this one too Grin. I agree glass chopping boards are useless and annoying to use for cutting, but I do like them as surface protectors because my workshops are a bit worn in places.

Ansumpasty · 09/05/2018 18:37

I bloody loved mine! So much more hygienic than wood. My DH hated it and smashed it. I think it was ok purpose Hmm

picklemepopcorn · 09/05/2018 18:37

I think they are surface protectors rather than chopping boards. Heat proof, scratch proof... I got rid of mine.

Ansumpasty · 09/05/2018 18:37

On!

anothergreentomato · 09/05/2018 19:13

Thank god it's not just me. Every self catering place I've ever stayed in seems to have one, friends too! Nice to know I'm not alone in despising them.

I hate them too.

Wood is best, but hard to clean. I do use a bgi wooden chopping board but have a few plastic ones too for raw chicken, fish and meat. They can go straight in the dishwasher unlike wooden ones.

Monkeypuzzle32 · 09/05/2018 19:19

You are so right on this, I don't think I could bear to use one-I mean, aren't they slippery and dangerous?

Furano · 09/05/2018 19:20

Hate them.

I use cheap wood ones. They go in the dishwasher and get replaced when they warp.

Onesmallstepforaman · 09/05/2018 19:24

Ansumpasty, there we're tests done which showed that wood end boards actually contained naturally antibacterial agents, and were in many cases better than other types of chopping boards.

topcat2014 · 09/05/2018 19:28

I thought they were just to protect surfaces from hot pans? Never actually chop on ours.

RosaRosaRose · 09/05/2018 19:29

Wilkinson's do bamboo ones. Cheap. Don't blunt the knife. Easily cleaned with bleach. (Oh lord, now I'm judging myself for putting too much bleach in the system) but at least they biodegrade. Also Wilkes do a great £7 knife sharpener. Keeps my kitchen feeling so efficient! Almost like we should be on Best Home Cooks telly! (In parallel universe) Grin

anothergreentomato · 09/05/2018 19:32

topcat2014 that's possible, but it seems in the self catering places they're there for chopping (at least there's no other option provided). I've always assumed I must be in a minority of hating them as they seem to be so popular. Maybe people just don't realise that's what they're for so use them for both purposes?

I'd be too afraid to use them for hot pans, a friend used one like this and one day when she put a hot pan on it it shattered, sending glass flying about the room.

Vile, horrible, things, especially ones with a naff picture of a cottage on, work of the devil, I agree with the poster about the Wilko ones, just bought one and very impressed

UterusUterusGhali · 10/05/2018 21:16

Awful, awful things.

I do as Furano does upthread. Cheap wooden ones in the dishwasher.
(And a red plastic one just for chicken.)
