To get the rage from glass chopping boards

anothergreentomato · 09/05/2018 18:13

Lighthearted and inspired by a different thread on chopping boards (I know, two on one day, remain calm!). But glass chopping boards, why? They make a weird scraping noise, or are just plain loud when you cut anything on them, especially the textured ones. Why do they exist? AIBU?

The words glass and chopping board shouldn't be in the same sentence. They are surface protectors. I use plastic chopping boards that I can put in the dishwasher.

IMO glss should not even be marketed as a chopping board material.

MontanaSkies · 10/05/2018 21:27

Terrible things. Luckily I've only ever seen them on 'Come Dine With Me' - I think it's a condition of appearing on the programme that you have to have one.

OlennasWimple · 10/05/2018 21:30

YANBU

Carrots have to be the worst thing ever to chop on them: first the carrot slips around because glass is shiny; then, if you manage to get the knife through the carrot without cutting your hand, the noise!! Urgh!

DameLillyTillicut · 10/05/2018 21:41

Well I am clearly in a minority! DH hates ours. I don't know why. I love it. No slippiness and no noise (how are you all chopping?!) and the non-porous, scratch free, wipe-cleanable-ness satisfies my OCD.

It doesn't have a naff cottage picture though. You can buy non-naff ones. Although mine is still "shit", apparently, according to DH. 🙄

I don't have one but like others always assumed they were to protect surfaces from hot pans....

LoniceraJaponica · 10/05/2018 21:54

DameLillyTillicut glass is completely the wrong material for chopping boards. It is harder then metal and wrecks knives. I have expensive, good quality knives and would probably use one on someone who tried to use one on glass.

Tailfeather · 10/05/2018 22:01

YANBU. Into Room 101they go.

sleepylittlebunnies · 10/05/2018 22:02

I’ve got a bright striped one next to the hob for putting the utensils on while cooking, hot pans and hot dishes from the oven. Had it about 5 years now but wouldn’t use it for chopping.

Redcrayons · 10/05/2018 22:07

I've got one which was a wedding present, so don't feel like I can throw it away. I put the cheap plastic IKEA ones on top of it when i use it. Hate the noise of the knife on the glass. And the bastard won't break, I dropped it on the floor once and it dented the floor without so much as a scratch.

bekindtobees · 10/05/2018 22:10

I prefer glass ones.

greenlanes · 10/05/2018 22:18

I love my glass ones. Who wants many wooden ones? I need to keep vegetarian and meat separate. So easy with glass. And they are decorative too!

Motoko · 10/05/2018 22:20

I take good care of my knives, so would never use a glass chopping board. You'd never see a chef use one. Wood is the best material.

Plus, the sound of the knife on glass is like running your nails down a blackboard. Eek!

Motoko · 10/05/2018 22:22

Those of you who love using glass boards, don't you care about the damage they do to your knives? Or do you just buy cheap knives and replace them regularly?

TrinaN · 10/05/2018 22:59

I have never seen glass chopping boards before. I have only ever seen glass worktop savers which you use for putting hot pans/dishes on to save the worktop from damage. I would never think to use them as a chopping board.

toomuchtooold · 11/05/2018 06:26

Aargh god I hate them. My mother has one, and the only knife she has is a really thin paring knife that's sharpened on the one side so it cuts weird if you use it in your left hand (I'm left handed and so was my dad - I'm assuming he didn't do a lot of cutting vegetables in his later years!) The feeling of pressing down with the knife on a bit of carrot and then the knife slipping away to the one side and then connecting with the glass with that bone-rattling click aargh.

annandale · 11/05/2018 06:32

Useless. Wood ones much cleaner and better, though I must admit to having a plastic one as well.

speakout · 11/05/2018 06:59

I agree they are horrible.

And also bad for knives. I care for my knives, they are good quality.
Also glass doesn't allow for good chopping technique.
I decided to teach myself to chop properly when I got my first place- over 30 years ago. in that time my speed and accuracy has increased- these techniques really work.
But in order to chop quickly both the knife and food needs some purchase on the board, that tiny bit of grip that is missing with glass.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/05/2018 07:05

Would never buy one - would set my teeth on edge.

I have several wooden ones for veg and one old laminate = easily washable one for meat, not that I need it for meat very often. I use sharp kitchen scissors for cutting up anything like chicken portions.

GlitterGlue · 11/05/2018 07:13

I hate them so much that when we encountered one on holiday last year I went out and bought a proper one. This year I’ll be packing one of those super thin ikea ones.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 11/05/2018 07:29

They make me physically cringe. YANBU

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 11/05/2018 07:31

Please don't clean wooden or bamboo chopping boards with bleach!!

Hot water & soap is fine. They are naturally antiseptic. You can cover them in salt when you've cleaned them to draw out any impurities. Rinse and put away.

Bleach - nooooo!!!!!

RainbowFairiesHaveNoPlot · 11/05/2018 07:49

I have them to protect the worktops in the kitchen - just so that doesn't get scratched (and it's easy to fling them in the dishwasher rather than faffing about cleaning the entire bench sometimes) but I go ballistic at any sign of them being used for chopping board action. Multi coloured set of plastic boards here.

Peachydream · 11/05/2018 07:57

MIL has them- gives me the rage. No sharp knives in the house, can't even slice a tomato. The clacking scraping noise when hacking through veg makes me shabby.

Peachydream · 11/05/2018 07:58

Stabby...not shabby!

speakout · 11/05/2018 08:04

Peachydream my mother is like this.

She hates sharp knives. Watching her chop a carrot with vegetable parer on a glass board takes about 4 minutes and gives me the rage. She also chops veg while all the parings are on the board, so all the chopped pieces fly off and land amongst the peelings which she has to pick out.
It's painful to watch.
