Aibu to have not picked up my dogs poo?

greenteaplease · 07/05/2018 21:39

Today I took my dog out for a walk on the beach, it's a lovely beach and majority of owners including myself pick up their dogs mess.

My dog loves to run out far and swim in the sea, she was ahead of me but in the distance I could see she was crouching down to go to the toilet. I hurried up to catch her however by the time I had got there I realised she had gone to the toilet at the edge of the sea and it was being washed away. I had a look to see if there was anything there but nothing was left.

A man with three large dogs approached me telling me 'your dog has just done a massive shit aren't you going to clean it?!'. I responded that I would have however it's been washed away. He pointed to something floating which wasn't a dog poo and said I should go in and get it.

Aibu to have not gone in? He spoke to me in a really threatening manner and said that it's people like you that make the world a disgusting place. I now don't want to go to the beach for a while as I've seen him there before and he speaks to a lot of other dog walkers, it was very intimidating as there wasn't many around that end of the beach and he was raising his voice and swearing.

I cannot understand people who think that their dog is entitled to be let off the lead.

Maybe your dogs are disobedient because they aren't trained properly, and not being let off lead means they aren't being exercised properly. Personally I can't believe people are so entitled to own animals they can't look after properly.

User where did OP say she thought it was ok to not pick up her dog shit? Calling someone a skank because OP didn't bring her scuba gear and fishing net to fish out a shit from an ocean, fucking hell give your head a wobble.

Humans are destroying beaches far more than dog turds.

rumpleyrumple · 09/05/2018 20:15

OP it's fine. Let it go (literally)

There is a lot worse in the sea that a bit of dog sh*t
At least a fish will just come along and eat it
Get a grip people

i am intrigued to know how all of these perfect dog owners collect diarrhea when their dog does a shit out in public??? How about if they vomit (assuming they haven't been trained to vomit on command that is) ? And how is it possible to never run out of bags (i.e, you take 3 and the darling dog decides it wants a 4th shit)? or you are having a bad day and you accidentally forget to take any bags at all? Please let me know the answer to these as perfect dog owners (and ergo perfect human beings).

Also, can anyone tell me if they run up to a child in a nappy paddling in the sea and promptly put any dirty nappy in a poop bag?? If we are getting pedantic (which this thread clearly is), think about a toddler shitting in a cloth/pampers style nappy and the poop oozing out into the sea.....as a responsible dog owner can i lambast a parent for not being a responsible parent? What if the child is sick in the sea, do you rush to clean it up ( and if so, it's done successfully, it didn't wash away, correct?)

^^THIS.

And all the people being utterly vile to the OP and calling her disgusting. Frankly your attitude towards the OP is the only disgusting thing here. Get the fuck over yourselves.

leaving it floating around as the sea comes in and goes out is pretty disgusting... it didn't just 'disappear'.... dog walkers need to be extra vigilant because some dog walkers are plain lazy and give the good ones a bad name.

If I was walking along the beach after you and saw a floating dog poo, I would think the owner a lazy slob and could see where he was coming from but no need for him to be aggressive unless you are one of those simpering 'I can do anything types'... just at least attempt to pick it up.

I tackle a 'lady' at our local beach, her dog had done a poo and her excuse was 'I didn't see it I was chatting, then carried on chatting and ignored it'.... that section of local beach now has a ban for dogs from May to Oct.... due to people who don't pick up/clean up for any multitude of reasons!

twoisntacrowd · 09/05/2018 20:26

I’ve had many a walk aborted with the toddlers due to dog poo getting on their shoes or wellies etc I also used to own a large dog, stay close and clean up then the dog can roam

DizzyBlondeMum2 · 09/05/2018 20:35

This

Why the heck was your dog so far away from you that you couldn't clean up after it? Sounds like you didn't have your dog under control really<

If a person feels threatened by your dog your dog is considered not under control under the law. Doesn't matter if the dog is actually a threat to them. If its so far away you can't get to its 'gifts' before the tide how can you for example stop it bothering a young family or getting into a fight with another dog.

SweetCheeks1980 · 09/05/2018 20:39

Some of these replies 😂
Let your dog have a run. It's good exercise and it's just a poo! There are all sorts of things in the sea and anyway fish and crabs love a good turd.
Pick it up whenever you can but in this case you are not being unreasonable. It's actually better to leave the poo in the sea or undergrowth that it is to add more bloody plastic bags to landfill.

Aibu to have not picked up my dogs poo?
MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 09/05/2018 20:41

This thread is hilarious. All this hysteria over a bloody dog poo.

YANBU OP that man was out of order for being aggressive. I am a very responsible dog owner and ALWAYS pick up their mess but they are not always regular with their bowel movements, no way would I be keeping them on a lead all the time for fear that they might poo. Really shocked at the poster above saying they're glad he had a go at you, as if it's ever acceptable to be so vile to another human being! They sound like the disgusting one.

I feel sorry for all those MNers who have no tolerance for dogs. If you've never had the love of a dog, you haven't lived! Grin

caringcarer · 09/05/2018 21:04

What pisses me off more is when I go to a beach or park where dogs are banned and clearly marked by prominent sign and selfish dog owners still let dogs run around. If dog owners have dogs that need a run they should run with dog on lead. I hate dogs off leads which is why I try to avoid them. There are plenty of stony beaches where dogs are allowed. I wish dog owners would stick to these. Dog shit is disgusting and owners should always clean it up. If you don't know when dog will shit keep it on lead.

Harebellmeadow · 09/05/2018 21:10

Oh, and dogs let off leash (many of them) in areas of natural protection, where it is clearly signposted not to do so. The owners round here trundle behind slowly with their fags, with no idea what their dogs are doing, or where they are rooting about. It makes me really upset, much more so than on beaches. I suppose if there is no enforcement people don’t bother to follow the rules. That’s humankind for you.

Kim1010 · 09/05/2018 21:10

I just wish people would keep there dogs in control on a lead in all public places!! Can use long extended leads !! My friends two year old was knocked right off her feet on a beach by a loose out of control dog, who then decided to crap everywhere then start a fight with a smaller dog terrifying the elderly lady owner, my husband beat it off, then a distance figure called it and the thing ran off!! Thank heavens most beaches have no dog signs Part of year at least, Too many irresponsible owners about!!!! ....

MaryPeary · 09/05/2018 21:15

YANBU. You are clearly someone who picks up poo and this time, you couldn't. The man who shouted was an arse as one dog poo in the sea is not the same as one on the beach where it can be trodden in.
Btw, dog poo doesn't float.

Frankly bemused at the hysterical nature of some replies. You were on a beach where dogs are allowed, and at a time when it's sensible for dogs to run. It's so joyous for a dog to run free. And yay for dog-free beaches for those who prefer them - thank goodness we live in a sensible country where all are catered for, eh?

balsamicbarbara · 09/05/2018 21:21

I pity those poor dogs trapped with owners who keep them enslaved to a lead at all times. Dogs love to run and enjoy freedom in places where it's appropriate and I can't believe some people would torment their pets this way.

MaryPeary · 09/05/2018 21:24

Nb I was fishing people's used sanitary towels out of the sea last weekend. I picked up a carrier bag full of lightweight plastic that was floating on the incoming tide. Much of it was from sanitary towels. I do beach cleans regularly - whenever I take dog to run on the deserted beach. The beach I used to go to as a child always had plastic tampon applicators, too, though you see few of them around nowadays. A bit of biodegradable dog poo, in the water, is nothing - just fish food.

I always pick up extra dog poo, and feel that covers me if there's ever one of mine that I miss. If all the responsible dog owners collect a couple of extra poos per walk, would we outnumber the slovenly ones, I wonder?

Like many dog walkers, I carry a bag to collect litter on walks too. Gives me something to do while dog is running around. But, like most dog walkers, I couldn't do that if dog had to stay on lead all the time, because my hands would be full and I couldn't dart into bushes etc.

Kim1010 those extending leads are so dangerous and have caused lots of accidents to both people and dogs. They are no substitute to letting a dog run free providing they have a solid recall.

starlight13 · 09/05/2018 21:50

YABU in the fact that you shouldn't let your dog off the lead in a public space, especially if you know they will need to empty their bowels in the not too distant future. It is upsetting and disgusting and I'm surprised you think it is acceptable behaviour in our society.
However, he has no right to speak to you in that tone. I guess he got angry over your lack of respect for beach cleanliness.

Advicewouldbelovelyta · 09/05/2018 21:50

I actually prefer the dog beach, dog owners are usually more considerate than other beach goers. The last time I went to a dog-free beach I kept finding peices of glass from smashed bottles, we quickly decided against making sandcastles and went home

fredrikaflowers · 09/05/2018 21:54

YABU that's rank

Advicewouldbelovelyta · 09/05/2018 21:55

So much littering the had to use a tractor to collect it

Aibu to have not picked up my dogs poo?
