Aibu to have not picked up my dogs poo?

Today I took my dog out for a walk on the beach, it's a lovely beach and majority of owners including myself pick up their dogs mess.

My dog loves to run out far and swim in the sea, she was ahead of me but in the distance I could see she was crouching down to go to the toilet. I hurried up to catch her however by the time I had got there I realised she had gone to the toilet at the edge of the sea and it was being washed away. I had a look to see if there was anything there but nothing was left.

A man with three large dogs approached me telling me 'your dog has just done a massive shit aren't you going to clean it?!'. I responded that I would have however it's been washed away. He pointed to something floating which wasn't a dog poo and said I should go in and get it.

Aibu to have not gone in? He spoke to me in a really threatening manner and said that it's people like you that make the world a disgusting place. I now don't want to go to the beach for a while as I've seen him there before and he speaks to a lot of other dog walkers, it was very intimidating as there wasn't many around that end of the beach and he was raising his voice and swearing.

UrsulaPandress · 09/05/2018 22:37

Whale vomit I believe

smilingontheinside · 09/05/2018 22:40

Why am I tormenting my dog by keeping it on a lead? My one dog can be let off and has good (usually) recall the other dog will not come back despite training (even the trainer struggled;) so being a good owner I keep them on a lead. My dogs have been attacked by dogs off leads who would not go back to owners when called and despite being "friendly" have terrified the one so much that they are now frightened of any large cream coloured dogs. They are happy, loved and rescued from bad starts so yep very tormented Hmm

Enthymeme · 09/05/2018 22:43

YANBU in that it would be unreasonable to go into the sea to recover a poo. However, had a dog once and went to local kennel club to help with training. They left me in no doubt that not only should my dog be on the lead until it performed but that a well trained dog should poo on command in a place I designate.! Have to confess I never achieved the latter. (Neither did my dog) In addition, they advised that unless my dog was trained to come to heel immediately on command it should not be let off the lead if other people or dogs are around.

Hannah my one dog has been jumped on so many times by off lead dogs that she is very nervous. She growled at a dog that was trying to mount her and the owner said "oh nasty dog growling like that, why don't you let it of course the lead" my reply was that I wold do more than growl if someone continued to give me unwanted attention and ad for not letting my dog off lead I was in fact being a responsible owner as the sign to the word we were in said all dogs to be kept on a lead. I just got tutted at and a filthy look. I wish my dogs were great at recall and could be trusted but they are not and so get lots of walks on leads, run in the garden (if they can be bothered but usually plop down under a tree) and sleep on the sofa the rest of the time. So badly treated my two Wink

smilingontheinside · 09/05/2018 23:26

Wood we were in and apologies for other typing errors it's bedtime Blush

mousecar · 09/05/2018 23:48

I really want to find some whale vomit! wonder if you can train a dog to sniff it out? might try that.

CalF123 · 09/05/2018 23:55

YABVVU

You should have waded all the way into the sea to search for any remaining traces of dog poo and removed them.

ferrier · 10/05/2018 00:22

Wow! Well done for finding a beach where you can take your dog OP. They are getting rarer than hen's teeth once May has started

Exactly. When I was looking for a beach to take my dog to last year they were very few and far between.

No my dog doesn't poo on schedule. She wees on command but can't poo on command. I don't find that particularly unusual- after all it's not something I can do either.
Guide dogs are much more trainable than most breeds - hence why they are guide dogs.

I'm not going to keep my dog on lead until she's done a poo. For the simple reason it quite likely will never happen. And, in common with many other breeds, it is totally unfair and counterproductive to keep them on lead at all times. They do need off lead time, not just for exercise, but to keep them well adjusted and sociable, especially with other dogs.
When my dog is off lead she is not going to harm anyone and if she hears me she will return to me. I've got a whistle which I use if she doesn't hear the voice command.
If ever there's a law which says keep your dog on the lead at all times then that will be the end of my dog owning days. I couldn't bear to see an animal restricted from their natural behaviours like that.

And finally, I have witnessed families burying their toddler's poos in the sand. Just wonderful Hmm

cheval · 10/05/2018 00:38

Oh for goodness sake. Have you seen how much disgusting waste water companies pump into our seas!?
Man was a bully beast. Just ignore the thug.
On a pavement or park, yes I would complain if you didn’t pick up dog poo. I once had the ultimate irritation. In the dark, picked up my dog’s poop, two seconds later, stepped on turd left by some other charmer.

MaryPeary
I was fishing people's used sanitary towels out of the sea last weekend. I picked up a carrier bag full of lightweight plastic that was floating on the incoming tide. Much of it was from sanitary towels. I do beach cleans regularly - whenever I take dog to run on the deserted beach. The beach I used to go to as a child always had plastic tampon applicators, too, though you see few of them around nowadays. A bit of biodegradable dog poo, in the water, is nothing - just fish food.

First - the dog poo that gets churned up by the waves is most likely going to stay on the shoreline if the tide is on the way out. It won't end up as fish food for a long time, if ever.

Second, there is a danger to dogs from tampons and other rubbish you encounter so frequently. Intestinal blockage is no fun and can require costly treatment. It's not fair to a dog to let it run free on what is basically in many cases a nice big tip.

MoronsandNeurons · 10/05/2018 03:01

I wish there were more parents like you. Dogs should be free to have a good run around on the beach without kids and their parents whinging, screaming, screeching and flapping their arms about - not to mention the delightful little darlings who run up to "stroke the doggy" without the parent asking if the dog is friendly first. It's great to see you would scoop your children up and take them away. Wish there were more like you.

^^ please tell me this is a joke? I can’t stand people who think animals are more important than humans, especially children. It’s usually people who have no kids of their own, have had a crappy experience in a relationship, or are inherently selfish.

On a side note I don’t know why this nation is so obsessed with pets. They are lovely, but most people shouldn’t be able to have them unless they have a decent amount space to be fair to the animal, and there shouldn’t be too many in a concentrated area.

OP I’m sorry someone shouted at you but YABU - if I saw that I would be beyond disgusted. It sounds like it couldn’t be helped this time (though I would have been mortified and yes would have tried to retrieve said poo even if I had to get wet to do it. BTW kudos to PP who went into the sea trying to retrieve bits with husband in same situation.) But I don’t think there’s any excuse to let it happen again.

urkidding · 10/05/2018 04:50

My friend's child has toxocariasis. This means that he has the mental age of a 4 year old child, he is now in his 20s. He is blind and will need care for the rest of his life. Her family life has revolved around this child's needs. This disease is caused by dog faeces. Recently, I have noticed in Brighton people put their dogs on bus seats.

Pluckedpencil · 10/05/2018 05:20

And this is why during summer dogs should be banned from beaches. It's May, I doubt there are many kids there with a bucket and spade, by the weekend it would have gone in the sea. Definitely not on to shout at you, that is just as antisocial.

mathanxiety · 10/05/2018 05:38

...not to mention the delightful little darlings who run up to "stroke the doggy" without the parent asking if the dog is friendly first
(Hmm at the tone and content of that and the diatribe from which it came...)

It's not that easy to ask first when the dog is off leash and it's not immediately obvious who the owner is.

A dog in a situation like that is something of an 'attractive nuisance'

allthingsred · 10/05/2018 06:10

Sorry op after cleaning dog poo off shoes/pram wheels/ bike wheels etc yabu.
Keep your dog on a lead til it's done it's business so you can clean up after it.

biscuitbrown · 10/05/2018 06:47

Yes YABU!!! It is absolutely disgusting and you shouldn’t be on the beach if you can’t pick up every single bit of fecal matter your dog produces. Especially at this time of year! AIBU to suspect you are being liberal with the truth and you could have actually got it - I suspect he wouldn’t have been quite so angry otherwise? Good for him for being a dog owner who actually cares about not leaving mountains of poo around. He’s probably angry because he sees it all the time.

Appletreecorner · 10/05/2018 08:59

Math. Your statement doesn't count when my puppy is trotting right by the side of me. She is in training. At the moment her walks consists of walking on a loose lead, walking to heel off lead and learning to ignore other dogs and people.

It's people like you who moan at dog owners yet don't see the problem with your children running over to stroke the doggy when that is detrimental to the puppys train ing.

Some dogs owners have no control over their dogs and it's fucking annoying. Some parents have no control over their kids and that's also fucking annoying.

Why does every dog thread end up with parents exclaiming shit about their kids and then get offended when dogs are compared to kids.

Not all dogs are allowed to run around when there are people and children around. Not all dogs need to be constantly leashed. It depends on how much effort has been put into training the dog.

Like parenting really. Some kids are brats and demand the world fall at their feet. Others have been brought up to learn about the world and live in harmony with other animals.

As far as a piece of dog shit in the sea..... is nothing at all compared to the amount of non biodegradable rubbish people leave at the beach and everywhere else.

I have never known a dog to leave behind syringes - have you? That was a lovely little find in the car park of a forest this morning! 😠

MiddleClassProblem · 10/05/2018 09:20

It's not that easy to ask first when the dog is off leash and it's not immediately obvious who the owner is.

Erm, you should teach your children to not go up to a dog they don’t know rather than say they can but you ain’t know who the owner is. That’s really dangerous. And just to confirm this was your response to children who run up to dogs so don’t try and claim it’s the other way around.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 10/05/2018 09:28

I can’t stand people who think animals are more important than humans, especially children.

Animals would survive without humans, humans couldn't survive without animals. So which do you think is more important?

Sammyislost · 10/05/2018 09:33

This is also the only time I haven't picked up my dogs poo. It was so far in the sea, and I would have had to go beyond ankle deep to get it (if I could find it!) so I just let it wash away....

He's just a jerk and I bet he's had that one time he didn't pick up too. I"m alway so surprised at how many people walk their dog in the pitch black....of course they can't see their dogs poo to pick it up!

RaquelWelch · 10/05/2018 10:47

Keep your dog on a lead until it has pooed, if you cant be sure you will be able to pick it up in time

ralfeesmum · 10/05/2018 11:28

He sounds a bit of a bullying JobsWorth - and if there's nothing to pick up because it's been swept away by the tide, did he really expect you to go wading in to try and find the You-Know-What and risk getting swept away yourself? Even close to a beach the tide's currents are risky.

This git of a man is clearly a power freak outside his home and (probably?) a hen-pecked husband within it.

Ignore!

Alleycat1 · 10/05/2018 11:48

One non-picked up poo in 4 years!!! Give the OP a break! She is obviously a responsible dog owner and clearly after getting a telling off from the man on the beach doesn't need the vitriol from some of the judgey-pants on here.
