Because the bastard windows 10 updates are driving me absolutely mental. I currently had less than 500mb of free space left after they've downloaded themselves and the only programs I have installed are Word and Powerpoint! (I also have ~20 word docs but nothing really huge)

Have a portable hard drive but that doesn't help with the windows ten idiocy.

Get a new hard drive.

I assume that with 28Gb you have a Chromebook.

Laptops normally have 1tb nowadays and you can get one for £200-300 in places like currys/pcworld

QuestionableMouse · 07/05/2018 14:38

Nope, it's a HP Stream and was in the 2-300 range.

I also only bought it in Jan!

Just stick a 128 GB SD card in it, isn't that what the SD slot is for?
Also the HP Stream comes with 1 TB OneDrive storage.

My DH (works in IT) suggests using the first point in the article here to clean up things that aren’t needed on your computer

Depending on which HP stream you can add an SD card but not increase the main storage.

Run disk cleaner and you'll get rid of lots of rubbish. Also, use windirstat (free software) to see what's using all the space.

Install any software to the external drive.

If you want to replace it, I'd get this.

Maybe look at the HP Pavilion. I bought mine 7 years ago for £300-400 with 750GB storage. Didn't even know you could get laptops with as little as 28GB, even my old shitty one that I had in 2006 had 40GB.

QuestionableMouse · 07/05/2018 16:27

Thanks. I run disk cleaner every week or so... it removed 34mbs.

75% of the space is used by windows. It's so stupid.

aPBio · 07/05/2018 16:33

I'm not on a Windows machine and can't remember exactly where it is but there's an option somewhere in there to ensure that files such as old upgrade files are deleted.

Do use windirstat as it'll show you what's taking up the space.

QuestionableMouse · 07/05/2018 16:47

It's Windows that's hogging the space.

And in disk clean up you've had it clean system files?

Chromebooks suit a certain type of user. DH loves his (we both work in tech) as he uses Google Drive for all storage, Google Suite for all work etc.

It does sound like you bought the wrong product but you could get it to work for you.

Why do you use Word not Docs, for example?

However, if you buy a replacement, make sure it fits your requirements. Like buying a car, budget is only the starting point of any decision.

Do check out refurbed computers (Dell and my link earlier).

Docs lags when typing.

Ccleaner is a good one to run. It gets rid of a lot of rubbish and old versions of Windows that are sitting on disk wasting space.
