to be pissed off with neighbour mowing grass today

I will probably be shot down for this. First really sunny day for months when we could enjoy our garden. We have grass and were sitting out for first time this year, enjoying late breakfast and the papers - utter bliss. Then next door neighbour started his very noisy ride-on mower. Their garden is much bigger than hours and it took nearly an hour of noise, petrol fumes etc. Then a peaceful break, and just relaxing again this afternoon when he started up again, and then produced another mower for the edges - more noise, more fumes.
For context we have had a really difficult time since last summer, very stressful and this was literally the first day we could really let go and relax without pressures to think about. Neighbour does not know that, but I am annoyed because it is inconsiderate. He works from home a lot of the time, and could have done this on a weekday. Very old fashioned probably, but I was brought up not to create any disturbance on a Sunday which was regarded as a day or rest when your neighbours deserved peace and quiet. For that reason, I never use a mower on a Sunday, or do other noisy building work, etc. Just needed to express my annoyance and regret at the return of tension so soon.

I also agree that lawn mowers are a welcome sound because they are one of the sounds of the summer, especially now after a long and horrid winter.

PotteryGirl · 06/05/2018 21:01

Blimey, this thread is the gift that keeps on giving. Well you did ask...To add my own two penneth here I think that if you’d have had an early breakfast in the garden it would have been peaceful and then you’d have missed the man on his mower or maybe not noticed him as you’d be doing your own jobs..you’ll know for next time. #firstworldproblems..

Parker231 · 06/05/2018 21:01

Sorry but you are being unreasonable. In the UK you have to cut the lawn when you can as the weather isn’t always good enough to get the mower out. I would say that Sunday is the day most people will getting the mower out - certainly is around where we live. It’s been a weekend of lawn mowers and BBQ’s.

Notmorewashing · 06/05/2018 21:01

Get a grip most people have to WORK mon-fri and often weekends too. Honestly !!

My DP did the lawn today, so did the man next door, and a person over the back wall. On a sunny Sunday I would expect it rather than be pissed off by it.

A sunny Sunday is the perfect time to mow the lawn in England, its tradition.

The "tradition" is a hand-pushed mechanical mower though, which is a lovely soothing sound. A motor mower is NOT the same!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 06/05/2018 21:08

I grew up with shops being closed on a Sunday, but don't recall it as a day of having to be quiet. Fairly certain my father would have been doing any d.i.y etc that had to be done, either in our house or in grandparents. And now I look back I am sure they only sent us to Sunday school so they could have a loving Sunday morning in bed. Grin

WingsOnMyBoots · 06/05/2018 21:08

I do understand how you feel but really YABU.

LoniceraJaponica · 06/05/2018 21:09

Yesterday I powerwashed the patio. Before then it was too cold to do it. I need to wait until the grass has fully dried, so I will mow the lawn tomorrow.

My neighbours won't be pissed off with me because they also take advantage of the nice weather to do outdoor DIY/have barbecues/mow lawns etc. Our weather is so unpredictble that we try to cram in all the outdoor activities on the rare occasion it isn't raining/too cold.

Frouby · 06/05/2018 21:14

Yabu. But you know that. But I also agree with you.

My NDN decided to jetwash something today. Fuck knows what it was but it took hours. She is a sahm with dcs at school all week. So could have done it another day.

It's bleeding irritating listening to lawn mowers and jet washers all day. I don't mind music and BBQs but the relentless whine of power tools is annoying.

Reasonable for folk to do them. But it still gets on my tits too.

CandleWithHair · 06/05/2018 21:17

Buy some earplugs you silly bloody woman.
Honestly, how have you got yourself so worked up about someone mowing their lawn on a nice day?

HolyMountain · 06/05/2018 21:18

My neighbour across the road hasn't cut his grass in weeks .

It looks shit.

Chattymummyhere · 06/05/2018 21:24

Never get an Allotment op. Four people with Rotavators, two cutting the walkways with lawnmowers, three using strimmers plus radios and bbqs all happening all day today.

Sunday is known as gardening day really op plus it’s a bank holiday which means every shop that has any type of garden item is having a sale to erm sell gardening bits to people who garden.

NotACleverName · 06/05/2018 21:26

It seems the whole concept of respecting your neighbours' peace and quiet on a Sunday has gone down the drain

The world doesn’t revolve around you, HTH.

YABVU. We are up early with our little one and I often cut the grass at 8am as I want it done before I hang out washing for the day but since I've already been up since before 6 I forget how early that is. The middle of the day is perfectly considerate. Sunday is a day for gardening.

BarefootMe · 06/05/2018 21:33

NotaCleverName
If you had read the thread - that is why I never mow the grass on a Sunday - out of consideration for my neighbours.

He did nothing wrong at all.

starlightmeteorite · 06/05/2018 21:36

If he's got ride on mower chances are it is a mulcher, and the grass needs to be really dry to mulch. I tried cutting ours in the week. It wasn't dry enough and the blades got clogged and the grass looks a mess. Today it was actually hot enough to dry the grass properly.

This is also why people mow late afternoon/early evening. The morning dew has finally burnt off and the evening dew hasn't yet arrived.

Calling him inconsiderate is a bit daft. Lawns need to be cut. V large lawns need ride on mowers. These are noisy, and can only be used in dry weather.

RavenLG · 06/05/2018 21:38

First really sunny day for months
what was wrong with yesterday, which was sunny?
Why are you so hung up Sunday being your day of “peace”. It was an hour and a bit out of what, 10hrs of th day you could spend outside? Get a bloody grip

But really, what is the difference between Saturday and Sunday? Why couldn't you have relaxed then?
