to be pissed off with neighbour mowing grass today

I will probably be shot down for this. First really sunny day for months when we could enjoy our garden. We have grass and were sitting out for first time this year, enjoying late breakfast and the papers - utter bliss. Then next door neighbour started his very noisy ride-on mower. Their garden is much bigger than hours and it took nearly an hour of noise, petrol fumes etc. Then a peaceful break, and just relaxing again this afternoon when he started up again, and then produced another mower for the edges - more noise, more fumes.
For context we have had a really difficult time since last summer, very stressful and this was literally the first day we could really let go and relax without pressures to think about. Neighbour does not know that, but I am annoyed because it is inconsiderate. He works from home a lot of the time, and could have done this on a weekday. Very old fashioned probably, but I was brought up not to create any disturbance on a Sunday which was regarded as a day or rest when your neighbours deserved peace and quiet. For that reason, I never use a mower on a Sunday, or do other noisy building work, etc. Just needed to express my annoyance and regret at the return of tension so soon.

I think you're being a selfish idiot! It's a nice sunny day when people have a day off, he can do it if he likes?

When else is he going to do it? In the rain at midnight? It's only hour, move on, get drink and get over it.

Tinkobell · 07/05/2018 17:48

Inconsiderate is before 8am and after 5pm IMO.

MummyMuppet2x2 · 07/05/2018 17:50

I can understand that you were enjoying your peace and quiet and that it's annoying to have that disturbed. And it would annoy me too.
Perhaps you need to look at the situation differently. Instead why not consider it lucky if you get 2 hours of peace on a Sunday to enjoy the lovely weather etc instead of feeling entitled to it. It's just a part of life.
So while I understand where you are coming from I would say YABU, but I would BU about it too, iyswim.

FaveNumberIs2 · 07/05/2018 17:53

What pisses me off, is the fact that you clearly think people who work from home have time to do other things during their day. They are working!!!

Mowing the grass is what you do on your day off, not while on your dinner break. Get a grip, live and let live. There will be other sunny days.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 07/05/2018 17:53

You were lucky. our neighbour is laying the foundation for a shed and has been breaking up hardcore for 2-3 hours a day this whole weekend. It reverberates and booms throughout our garden extension like pile driver.

But they're otherwise good neighbours so don't want to complain. (She said as BBQ fumes drifted across the garden!)

ChocoholicsAsylum · 07/05/2018 17:54

Hmmm I understand what you are saying OP. Is it a once off? I actually moved from a home I loved because the guy next door was utterly unbearable with this behaviour. Garden was the size of a postage stamp but he made endless noise mowing, strimming, hammering etc outside... jetwashing a path for 6 hours, if the sun was out he was out shagging a lawnmover or drill utter cunt of a man! No consideration and ruined every fucking day of my summer.
If its a once off fine but if like my ex neighbour put a complaint in about him x

You need to get over it

marymoosmum · 07/05/2018 18:05

Not RTFT, but I hate it when people Mow the lawn on a nice day, as I have had hayfever and mowing the lawn really sets it off, but I know IABU, it is their lawn they can mow it when they like. So YANBU for being a bit pissed off, if you have a grumble to yourself and leave it at That, if you say anything YABVU.

Sofabitch · 07/05/2018 18:11

I paid the kids to mow the lawn and went out ;)

Needs to be done. Today seems as good a day as any.

Sofabitch · 07/05/2018 18:11

I also usually wait until evening if I'm cutting on a hot day...its just too hot otherwise

Boulty · 07/05/2018 18:15

YABU ... if he did it at 5am or midnight then yes have a whinge overwise seriously YABVU

Brokenbiscuit · 07/05/2018 18:20

There is nothing special about Sundays imo. It's ok to mow the lawn any day of the week, I think, but not too early in the morning or too late at night.

singledadstu · 07/05/2018 18:28

The only thing that I could find unreasonable during any sunny day is when some utter bastard lights a fire. With all the different bins and recycling we get help with I can’t see a need to burn anything in a nuit up location. So yes yabu for being pissed at neighbours mowing the lawn

DiegoMadonna · 07/05/2018 18:38

I don't think you can call someone inconsiderate for doing something that, judging by the vast majority of responses on this thread, is totally normal and acceptable.

BoomBoomsCousin · 07/05/2018 18:41

You have the likes of B&Q and Asda to thank for Sundays as they are.

Not really. You have the millions of Britons who were sick to death with Sundays being dull as dishwater for the sake of the few. Sunday opening was an incredibly popular change in the law.

TheHLife · 07/05/2018 18:44

It’s a shame your day has been disturbed but I don’t think it’s the neighbours fault it sounds like your having a tough time and this is just another annoyance to add to the list

As someone who works from home Mon - Fri 9-5 I am working, not sitting at home painting my nails so doing my garden would be an impossibility unless I used my lunch break

Gemjoy · 07/05/2018 18:44

I can TOTALLY understand how annoying that was I have the similar problem my elderly neighbours daughter is always cutting her grass and hedge early morning when you just want some peace and quiet

Micksee15 · 07/05/2018 18:46

Wow...who pissed in your cornflakes??
You'd be moaning if he didn't cut the grass. Leave the poor man alone!! sounds like a decent spud to me 👍

Bobbi73 · 07/05/2018 18:56

My neighbour has mowed his lawn, strimmed the edges and jet washed his patio, garden path and goodness knows else, he's been at it all day. It's a bit annoying but it's what weekends are for. We had friends over for a bbq and have had kids running around, jumping in the paddling pool etc. I it's probably annoyed them too but that's life. If you want to avoid neighbour noise, you have to live in the countryside.

Bratsandtwats · 07/05/2018 19:22

My neighbours are currently having a party.

FrankenToast · 07/05/2018 19:22

Annoying? Absolutely. But you are being absolutely, incredibly unreasonable. If you don't like the sound of lawnmowers, then sell your house and move miles away from other human beings.

Pettcott · 07/05/2018 19:29

So when do you mow your lawn?? Presumably when your neighbour is working. I expect they find that annoying. You are being totally unreasonable

TheFairyCaravan · 07/05/2018 19:40

Almost everyone in our street has mowed their lawn yesterday or today. When I was growing up my dad always did ours at the weekend. Most people do.

Our house is on the edge of a farmer’s field. He’s often out through the night with some sort of machinery. I don’t sleep well because I’m a chronic pain sufferer but that’s not his fault so I suck it up.
