To think decking is NOT a selling point anymore?

We have crap decking. It's rotten.

I think we should just rip it out but DH seems to think that decking in general is a selling point. House is going on the market soon.

I hate decking anyway and this in my way.

It's not fashionable anymore, it's bloody inconvenient and a bugger to maintain. If this was our forever home I would have no hesitation about getting shot of it.

Ugh
Just realised the kitchen is now covering the old patio so gawd knows what is under the bloody decking

Belindabauer · 05/05/2018 16:19

Its very dated.

Blit · 05/05/2018 16:23

Friend's roofer slipped on hers' and injured himself, I put my foot through a rotten bit and sprained my ankle. The rats meanwhile were thriving under it.

Not for me.

ShatnersWig · 05/05/2018 16:41

Bought house. Decking between rear entrance and rest of garden. Wet one day, down I went, broken wrist.

When the cast came off six weeks later, first thing I did was chop it up and burn it and put a patio down. Murderous stuff.

Laiste · 05/05/2018 16:42

Dated and a bit of a liability. A band wagon every one jumped on in the 80s/90s but found didn't live up to expectations, and needs to be kept spotless to avoid looking shabby and worse than having nothing there at all.

Like 99% of conservatories

namechangedtoday15 · 05/05/2018 16:46

Back to the OP.

Yes absolutely crap decking is not a selling point. Anything in a house which smacks of a failure to maintain or shouts "money needed here" will never be a selling point.

But properly maintained decking or composite decking is definitely a selling a point if it enhances the garden. It's definitely not dated (if done well) and is very practical where there's a drop between back of house and garden.

kikashi · 05/05/2018 16:51

It depends on how much you want to spend on selling.
Do you know what is under it? It is usually used to cover very old cracked concrete, boundaries of extensions, a big drop down from the back door - things which it was a quick and easy and relatively cheap fix/cover up for. You may have something underneath that will take a lot more money to fix and maybe not be cost effective if selling.

I don't like decking but bought a house with a small (3ft) deck out to the lawn. I have thought of ripping it up but there would be a big drop outside of the back door and then 2 steps up the lawn. If I was selling I would replace it (maybe with composite) so it looked new and clean as fixing my problem would cost thousands.

tinysleepy · 05/05/2018 16:54

Decking is great in blistering hot countries where the wood gets baked from the sun.
In UK it is rubbish, slimy nightmare unless you are constantly maintaining.
Ripped ours out & it's great having patio stones that you just jet wash.

Turnitupdrhill · 05/05/2018 16:57

I hate decking. So slippery. We've removed ours and put a raised bed there instead. If a garden is muddy or sloping, I'd use some textured paving stones rather than decking, safer and looks better.

reetgood · 05/05/2018 17:00

We have an old, cracked raised concrete patio slab in our garden. I haaaaaate it. I go back and forth between decking or paving slabs to cover it. I think because of the site, it will have to be decking. It’s maybe dated but better than that bloody concrete.

Goldmonday · 05/05/2018 17:50

I hate decking, it's hard work, constantly needs cleaning, and when you re stain it the mess get bloody everywhere for weeks. Also I think it looks cheap and nasty and hate to thing what's festering underneath. If I bought a house that had it the first thing I would do is rip it up

PanannyPanoo · 05/05/2018 18:38

To those with slippery decking we used Osmo anti slip decking oil 2 years a go. Brilliant.
We have decking at the bottom of our garden to level out a steep drop.

It leads to steps to the park so we use it often. Not at all slippery now.

Metoodear · 05/05/2018 19:51

We got done they re painted our it looked awesome for about 5 minutes and now it’s staring to chip of it’s rotting and Mank

HisBetterHalf · 05/05/2018 20:06

whats everyone replacing their decking with?

tootiredtospeak · 05/05/2018 20:11

Its not the decking its you. You havent looked after it. Paving looks shit if you let it get mucky and weeds grow. Lawn looks awful if its overgrown. Its all about how it looks. My decking is stunning... a pain in winter but right now with the sun setting its gorgeous.

neonyellowshoes · 05/05/2018 20:28

It's concrete underneath. A bit cracked but at least it's not the hideous tacky, trip hazard and filth trap that is decking. I also don't understand why family's with children get it- surely it's just something for toddlers to trip over and get things stuck in, like toys and bits of their anatomy.

Nope kids love it 😁

LisaSimpsonsbff · 05/05/2018 20:37

whats everyone replacing their decking with?

We took up the very damaged patio that turned out to be underneath and turfed the whole area, so we now have a nice little lawn

neonyellowshoes · 05/05/2018 20:45

Really? Got to be hard on little feet with all the gaps and ridges.

When it comes to maintenance, how bloody hell does that work? How do you stop reams of shit getting stuck underneath?

TartanDr3ams · 05/05/2018 20:47

Depends on the garden. Decking works as a selling point in our garden cause near the top there is a steep slope so it breaks that up.. not so vital on a flat garden tho cus like others have said, the upkeep is a huge pain

tootiredtospeak · 05/05/2018 20:49

No worse than patio stones mine are 5 and 16 months. The only stuff under it is weeds which get pulled out and weedkiller put in. The gaps arent big enough for that much to go through. We protect and paint it once a year same as the fences.

KirstyJC · 05/05/2018 20:53

We have decking and I did slip on it in the winter when it froze, but then I can slip over fresh air....

We have to pressure wash ours every spring and re-paint it with that decking oil stuff. It does make it look like new although it is a pain. And actually needs doing in autumn to really but we can't be bothered.

If we could have afforded patio we would have put that down but actually I prefer decking for the kids as they do mess about and fall over a lot when they are playing and decking is less painful to land on than patio slabs. As I know, since I also fell over on the patio too!

Grass all over wouldn't have been practical as it is on a main walkway so would have got all muddy.

RoseWhiteTips · 05/05/2018 20:58

Decking is nasty. We have weathered grit/gravel, authentic flat stones in a path shape and gorgeous moss areas colonising other parts. All natural.

PrimalLass · 05/05/2018 20:59

We just pressure wash our and oil once a year. What's so hard about that?

The crappy crazy paving right behind our house slopes about 60cm from one end of the house to the other - the house is on a hill. Not really any other way to level it than decking.

bbcessex · 05/05/2018 21:01

We have composite decking. It’s bloody fabulous ❤️ Weatherproof, maintainance free and non slip. Bloody love it!
