To think decking is NOT a selling point anymore?

We have crap decking. It's rotten.

I think we should just rip it out but DH seems to think that decking in general is a selling point. House is going on the market soon.

I hate decking anyway and this in my way.

It's not fashionable anymore, it's bloody inconvenient and a bugger to maintain. If this was our forever home I would have no hesitation about getting shot of it.

God I have decking and just out my house up for sale ? Is it really that much of a sticking point Sad

I'm also looking at houses and honestly unless it's major structural work and ££ something that I could rip out and change really wouldn't / bother me ?!

felicitythemangyfox · 05/05/2018 15:18

We have decking. We also have rats Sad

NotMeNoNo · 05/05/2018 15:19

It's fairly cheap to remove, just a minor bit of garden landscaping. Deal breaker seems a bit extreme. I would clean it up and leave it as someone might not want whatever you replace it with either.

felicitythemangyfox · 05/05/2018 15:19

clumsyduck I don't think you need to worry too much. People can always to it out.

felicitythemangyfox · 05/05/2018 15:19

*rip

BrightYellowDaffodil · 05/05/2018 15:21

It would definitely not be a selling point, in fact decking would be something that would put me off. Slippery as hell in wet weather (I've nearly gone arse over tit on decking before) and maintenance costs when it starts rotting and that's before you have infestations of rats etc.

I wouldn't want composite decking either, I'm not a big fan of plasticky stuff and vastly prefer natural materials. If natural materials aren't suitable then I'd rather do without.

clumsyduck · 05/05/2018 15:22

Yeh that's what I'm thinking , it's only a few years old ( replaced the original rotting lot that wasn't a deal breaker when I bought ) nicely painted etc . Sure wherever I buy will have plenty not to my taste ! But then I like old houses that I can " do up" ( and actually afford !) rather than buying somewhere already perfect

megletthesecond · 05/05/2018 15:22

Rat hotel.

expatinscotland · 05/05/2018 15:23

Slippery as hell!

OreoMini · 05/05/2018 15:23

I don’t like decking but if everything else was right with the house it wouldn’t put me off. I would just rip it out once I’m there!

Get rid.

CrabappleBiscuit · 05/05/2018 15:30

We’ve got decking as 3 foot drop out of back door and the decking lifts the floor and garden table into the sun...but rest of back yard paved with a massive raised bed with trees in it. It’s useful in some places.

When we replace I’m gettin composite. And I nearly broke my shoulder slippin on the previous ontreated drck8ng....

thisparachuteisanapsack · 05/05/2018 15:31

I quite liked ours in rented accommodation a few years ago. It was never slippy and nice for my daughter to sit out on it doing her painting etc when she was a baby.

sparklepops123 · 05/05/2018 15:33

We got rid of ours it was a death trap when it was wet. It’d put me off if I was viewing a house

BrownJenkins · 05/05/2018 15:38

If you have decking and rats, your decking either wasn't constructed properly or hasn't been maintained well.
As for being slippery, again, it's all down to maintenance and using the right products.

HerFemaleness · 05/05/2018 15:42

YANBU, I hate mine. Can't wait to get it dug up and flagstones down.

Lazypuppy · 05/05/2018 15:43

I love well maintained decking, we've got some in our garden to make most of the sun as our patio is in the shade by midday. Made our garden look so much wider

BadTasteFlump · 05/05/2018 15:44

There were no creatures of any description, or nests etc, when we took ours up. I was kind of disappointed.

Tinkobell · 05/05/2018 15:53

If a structural engineer were to look at the rotten decking and there was a serious risk of someone falling through it, this would not be a selling point....it could be a personal injury claim!
Rip it out and replace it was an artificial rot free decking such as Millboard. They are excellent and no maintenance.

DailyMailFail101 · 05/05/2018 16:00

Decking would put me off, rats love it.

EdWinchester · 05/05/2018 16:02

Agree. It’s naff.

Does anyone have it nowadays?

candlesandlight · 05/05/2018 16:04

Decking definitely not a selling point . Prefer a patio and bifold doors .

TheFirstMrsDV · 05/05/2018 16:07

We have a small deck at the back.
I would love to get rid of it.
Its gone rotten and OH is disabled so its impeding him getting down the garden to the shed where he does his physio.
We were going to see if we could afford to get it fixed.
now I am wondering if we should just rip it up.
But we have to step down into the garden (three steps). How does that work if we pull it up?
I vaguely remember there being a crazy paving patio underneath but not much more.

Anyone give me advice? I would really appreciate any input. I have woken up worrying about this. not just the money but finding someone to do the work.

Sorry to attempt a hijack.

MrsDilber · 05/05/2018 16:07

Horrible stuff. Get rid op.

MumofBoysx2 · 05/05/2018 16:07

Decking is tacky, I think. Quality paving stones are much nicer, maybe with a newly laid lawn it will look bigger and nicer.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 05/05/2018 16:11

We fairly recently bought a house with decking. It didn't put us off, but we did immediately rip it out. House needed other work so it was never going to be an effortless 'good to go' job, but even if it had been I can't imagine actively discounting the house because of the decking, even though we didn't like it. But then we were first time buyers, so both naive and very grateful to be able to buy a house at all!
