To think decking is NOT a selling point anymore?

We have crap decking. It's rotten.

I think we should just rip it out but DH seems to think that decking in general is a selling point. House is going on the market soon.

I hate decking anyway and this in my way.

It's not fashionable anymore, it's bloody inconvenient and a bugger to maintain. If this was our forever home I would have no hesitation about getting shot of it.

I like mine - it's painted and well maintained, no rats (4 cats!) and dry.

I do have a family of mice under the shed though

NCbecauseIdontwanttooutasaman · 05/05/2018 14:30

It's good for covering sins such as ugly or uneven ground or where there are differences in levels. Anything poorly maintained looks rubbish. Are you going to remove one piece of ugliness to reveal different ugliness underneath.

llangennith · 05/05/2018 14:32

Hate mine. It’s raised decking at the end of the garden and was the only solution to an ugly problem.

It’s slippery when wet or even damp and never really looks nice. If there’s a better option, get rid of the decking.

Caribou58 · 05/05/2018 14:35

The house we have now - which we bought last summer - had extensive decking. Which was rotting. It wasn't a selling point, though if we hadn't loved the house as much as we did, could have been a deal breaker.

We got it dismantled and removed within a couple of weeks.

You'd be throwing money down the drain if you got it repaired. Rip it out.

SluttyButty · 05/05/2018 14:37

The last house we lived in, the people showing us around were quite proud of the rotten and disgusting decking. We ripped it out soon after moving in and replaced with a nice patio.

namechangedtoday15 · 05/05/2018 14:39

We've just laid composite decking. Would like to think it's 100 times better than the old style wooden decking of old. Doesn't rot or need maintaining and I think it looks great Blush

StopBeingNosey · 05/05/2018 14:41

I hate our decking and can’t wait to get rid - it’s ridiculously slippery, looks crap and mice live underneath it.

HappilyHarridan · 05/05/2018 14:48

I love our decking and have never slipped on it or had rats! I wouldn't care either way though if viewing a house as long as whatever was there was in good condition.

RiddleyW · 05/05/2018 14:48

We ripped out a load of decking. I certainly wouldn’t have it again

JustDanceAddict · 05/05/2018 14:50

We had it in our old house - slippery as fuck! Looked good when first laid 18 years ago...

FizzyGreenWater · 05/05/2018 14:51

Hahahaha

NO.

It would be the first thing to go. My face would fall as soon as I stepped into the garden. 'Oh great! So probably rat nests to deal with' thinks me.

Get rid!!!!

Fluffyears · 05/05/2018 14:52

Bloody lethal when icy. I wouldn’t have not bought a house or bought a house based on decking.

Kursk · 05/05/2018 14:55

Love our deck 10ftx 40ft it’s raised 5ft off the ground so we have good storage underneath.

We spend most the summer out there, I would build a second deck out the front of the house

Elllicam · 05/05/2018 14:56

We are currently torn between two houses, the decking is a massive negative for one.

Praisebe · 05/05/2018 14:56

Decking is vile so tacky

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 05/05/2018 14:58

Dp Has literally spent all morning ripping out his parents decking. Luckily for him it was so rotten it basically crumbled to pieces.

I think it looks so dated. Much prefer a nice patio.

BadTasteFlump · 05/05/2018 14:59

It's horrible. We ripped ours up and there was perfectly nice paving underneath.

TheHonSaucyJane · 05/05/2018 14:59

My friend had decking on his top floor terrace in Clapham.

He didn't get rats.

He got pigeons. So many pigeons!

SquatDiddly · 05/05/2018 15:01

Whenever I think of decking I think rats. Not a selling point.

SquatDiddly · 05/05/2018 15:02

it’s raised 5ft off the ground so we have good storage underneath.

And a big rat playground.

cushioncovers · 05/05/2018 15:04

I've got decking. When it was first put down we loved it but it's now old rotten and very slippery. Can't wait to get rid of it.

SubtitlesOn · 05/05/2018 15:12

Why do rats build their nests there?

Kursk · 05/05/2018 15:13

No, never had any rats, a porcupine, but no rats.

CandleWithHair · 05/05/2018 15:15

I am about to install decking over my patio, this is interesting reading but you’re not putting me off Grin

I have cats so no chance of rats. The external doorways in my house are all just under a foot off the ground and I fecking HATE tripping out of the patio doors down the awkward step every time I want to sit outside. I can’t wait to have a lovely level surface to lounge about on. I will be sure to maintain it properly tho, it sounds like lack of maintenance is a decking problem!

funmummy48 · 05/05/2018 15:17

We love our newly constructed decking. It's right outside our French Windows and has steps down to a lower level (5ft below) where we have a decked patio leading to grass. Sitting here with a Pimms, enjoying the sunshine!
