Listen with headphones if you want to listen in the garden

Neighbour at the back garden has his potting shed next to my summer house that I would like to read it. But I often can't as he has the radio on.

If I wanted to listen to Graham Norton in the garden I would listen with headphones as it's pretty selfish to take away other people's silence in their own garden with constant sound.

What is it with all these posters at the minute expecting silence from Neighbours?

SneakyGremlins · 05/05/2018 10:19
Hmm
jnfrrss · 05/05/2018 10:20

I can still hear it throughout my house unless I close all the windows

😂 unless it’s on full blast I think it’s fine. People make a certain amount of noise in a garden

jnfrrss · 05/05/2018 10:21

I'm not expecting silence but there's no need for one guy to inflict us all with radio 2.

If everyone had radios in their gardens it would be awful, but 90% don't as they know it's selfish.

Yanbu op it's really selfish to play music outside.

MismatchedStripySocks · 05/05/2018 10:21

I wouldn’t expect silence at all times but would expect common sense to prevail. Eg loud booming music at 11pm on a work night is not on but some music during the day has to be put up with. Personally, I would prefer quiet but I know others like some noise but as long as people are sensible that’s ok. My neighbors however are not. 6 kids yelling on a trampoline at 10pm last night, not fun!

QueenOfIce · 05/05/2018 10:23

Yanbu, I am fairly sound sensitive (my problem I know) I'd hate to have to listen to the neighbours radio. It's bad enough when people listen to videos etc on their phones in public places full blast. I do feel at times consideration for others has got lost somewhere.

KittyVonCatsworth · 05/05/2018 10:23

YABU. Unless it’s deafening then he has the right to listen to whatever he wants in his own garden. I personally hate wearing earphones, they make my ears ache.

lljkk · 05/05/2018 10:26

If it's very loud just ask him to turn it down a bit?

I'm typically doing something like washing the car, cleaning a bike or weeding the patio when I have radio on in the garden.

To make OP happy... I need to go pay £200 for a better phone, and then pay some amount per month on a data package on top, (better phone so it can download the appropriate app), and produce decent sound without lag, and then some way to strap it to my body while I'm moving around, with the dangling headphones that hopefully won't get wet or dirty.

Or I can just have the radio on like all my neighbours to when they do similar chores.

campion · 05/05/2018 10:27

I'll swap you for next door neighbour's builders breaking through the house wall as I type.

Inside or outside today isn't going to make much difference to the sound and vibration of pneumatic drill, hammer and angle grinder. Not to mention the mess floating our way.

I agree about Graham Norton thoughGrin

OreoMini · 05/05/2018 10:27

As long as it’s not too loud I don’t see a problem.

Frosty66612 · 05/05/2018 10:29

I’m with you OP. I’d find this incredibly annoying. I wouldn’t mind hearing a bit of noise but if it’s loud enough that I could hear it in my house with the windows and doors closed then i’d be fuming. Some people have no awareness for other people in their surroundings

dietcokemango · 05/05/2018 10:29

I'm not expecting silence but there's no need for one guy to inflict us all with radio 2.

Quite, why not a bit of gabber?Grin

jnfrrss · 05/05/2018 10:30

@lljkk £200? And whatever, just sounds like excuses. I have a FM radio for the gym that charges via USB. It was a tenner as it would be ridiculous if everyone played music aloud on their phone.

I need to move on a road with people like me that just want quiet but don't want to live in the middle of nowhere.

OP posts:
HelenTheHunter · 05/05/2018 10:37

I've just moved to the middle of nowhere. It's bliss. All I can hear is birdsong. And my own music, but nobody else's! Don't knock it until you've tried it ;)

jaseyraex · 05/05/2018 10:37

Ask him to turn it down or you read somewhere else. My neighbour is currently faffing around in his garden with some classical bollocks playing, I've shut the windows at the back so I can't hear it. If it's still on when DS goes for a nap then I'll ask him to turn it down a touch.

Why does no one on here seem to interact with their neighbours? It's such a simple problem to be resolved!

Babdoc · 05/05/2018 10:46

I agree with OP. It’s bad manners to inflict your own taste in music on your neighbours - why should they have their peaceful enjoyment of their gardens shattered by someone selfish and noisy next door? Take the damn radio indoors and turn it down!
My other pet hate is being choked in stinking cigarette smoke from neighbours smoking outside. It makes it impossible to sit out and sunbathe. Why can’t nicotine addicts use patches or switch to vaping? Nobody wants to stink of smoke like them, or suffer ill health from passive smoking. And it’s annoying having to shut all your windows on a hot day, to keep the stink out of your house.

SparklyMagpie · 05/05/2018 10:50

My pet hate is annoying posts about smokers from posters like Babdoc moaning about it

corlan · 05/05/2018 10:50

I've started putting the radio on when I'm in the garden to drown out the noise from next door!
If I can't have peace in my garden, then I'd rather listen to a noise that I've chosen.

WomaninGreen · 05/05/2018 10:53

I'm with you OP
I like summer but the noise that comes with it drives me mad
I can't wait to live in the middle of nowhere! But I wouldn't have to if people could just be a bit considerate.

You could always put headphones on to block out his noise. Why should your love of silence trump his love for a bit of music.

MyFriendFlickaWasAHorse · 05/05/2018 10:56

@helen

Envy I am dying to move out to the back of beyond but sadly can’t convince family!

pictish · 05/05/2018 11:03

I’m going to trot out the old line “you don’t actually have a right to silence”. A radio in the background is not nuisance noise, it’s just part of living within a community with other people. if you want a silent garden free of such intrusions then you will need to get a place with no neighbours.

Of course if it’s blasting that’s unreasonable and you’d be fine to politely ask them to turn it down a bit. Otherwise it’s a case of sucking it up.

Some people think that making any noise is inconsiderate but I don’t agree. People have a right to live and use their properties as they wish and some of that involves making a noise.
