Not really an AIBU but here’s a good article on ‘incels’ and the dangers of modern day misogyny.

I only heard the term 'incel' for the first time this weekend. I only read an article, rather than any of the related forums, but find it to be terrifying. Self loathing in men turning into misogyny and then utter hatred.

Unfinishedkitchen · 04/05/2018 13:22

Hopefully someone can do a better job of doing a clicky link.

However, essentially the article states that there is a growing group of men online calling for the mass rape and genocide of women. These groups have been linked to the Canadian terrorist attack and a mass shooting in America targeting women. Lines can be drawn between them and the type of men who went on to form the SS in Nazi Germany as they also had a hatred of women as their initial driver. Finally, it concludes that we will see increasing numbers of terrorist attacks from violent misogynists linked to intel and alt-right movements.

Incel not intel!

Hmm, I wonder why he didn’t include the rampant misogyny in the Labour Party?

Unfinishedkitchen · 04/05/2018 13:31

Because the article was written by a journalist based in Australia.

Please don’t derail a serious subject with anti-Corbyn stuff.

For the Guardian. A UK paper.

Goingalonenow · 04/05/2018 13:35

Incels are a whole other level. Every woman is only good for sex but only if she's a virgin. Women owe incels sex. It makes me sick.

Lacucuracha · 04/05/2018 13:37

Why derail the thread, Mighty?

OP, I totally agree that it's terrifying. The Canadian terrorist was a fan of Elliot Rodgers, who carried out the shooting in the US in protest about women not sleeping with him.

The incel sub-reddit was so bad that reddit had to shut it down.

Tringley · 04/05/2018 13:38

For the Guardian. A UK paper.

Nope, for the Guardian Australian edition. Cop on.

MyOtherUsernameisaPun · 04/05/2018 13:40

This is a serious subject, mightymucks. Start your own thread about whatever you want to discuss rather than derailing this one.

The incel movement is terrifying and especially so because it's growing all the time. I really fear for teenage boys and young men who are exposed to this stuff, and I fear even more for the women who will interact with those men.

Mightymucks · 04/05/2018 13:56

Yes, but he doesn’t just limit it to that does he? He uses the incel movement to start bringing other people in as comparisons. And funnily enough they are all people on the opposite end of the political spectrum.

The entire point of the article is that he is linking ‘incel’ with right wing populism and insisting that the left is some happy clappy paragon of female equality when it’s not.

Considering that is the entire point of the fucking article maybe if you don’t want that discussing don’t fucking post it?

Mightymucks · 04/05/2018 14:11

Perhaps the Labour Party was a bad example give he is Australian. But he gives the example of the Freikorps sexual violence to show that the right wing is misogynistic whilst ignoring the fact the Soviet Army raped its way across Europe in WWII.

There is no evidence Alek Minnassian was right wing. The NYT piece he complains about is pretty repulsive but the writer is not a facist yet the writer compares him to one.

This is just taking a tragic incident and using it for his own political purposes. Bit like after there is a Muslim terror attack and a rash of ‘all Muslims are dangerous’ articles come out.

The whole point of the article is that right = bad, misogyny, left = equality, reason and progress. But that’s not true.

So yeah, if you don’t want a conversation about left vs. right misogyny then it’s probably not a good idea to post an article about left vs. right misogyny.

Hmm....anyway, thanks for the clicky link MissBartlett.
