To think they will never reveal Jon Venables identity

In case people attack him

Nice idea in theory stripping away what protects him as he certainly doesn't deserve it, but no court will grant it in case of mob justice

They don't need to. You only need to Google his name and 'now'. Apparently it has been circulating around prisons for some time.

ILikeMyChickenFried · 02/05/2018 09:32

James Bulger's mother is against it out of fear of innocent people being mistaken for him and I agree with her.

Soubriquet · 02/05/2018 09:34

If it was revealed, wouldn't it reduce innocent people being attacked instead of a photo being circulated on the internet that may or may not be him?

I was going to say the same as previous poster - I've seen pictures of him that were revealed in the last few years. He shouldn't have been given a new identity after he screwed up the first one they gave him. He's had to have at least two new ones after blabbing who he was when drunk. If he doesn't care about people knowing then why should our country (that can't seem to fund the NHS as it should amongst other important public sector services) waste such a lot of money in protecting someone like that.

MrsJayy · 02/05/2018 09:34

We/they don't need to know who he is what he looks like, a poor guys picture was cirulated on facebook recently and it wasn't even him.

MrsJayy · 02/05/2018 09:36

I think he should be tagged though for the rest of his life he sounds like a liability.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/05/2018 09:38

I'm all for people having a second chance but when they are too stupid or arrogant to make the most of it (as Venables clearly is) then there should be no more chances.

ILikeMyChickenFried · 02/05/2018 09:38

I guess the concern is for people who look similar to him.

Soubriquet · 02/05/2018 09:39

Sounds like a good idea MrsJayy but I bet it won't happen for "right to humanity" or something like that.

Unfortunately there are some people who will take justice into their own hands and I strongly disagree with that. The general public do not have the right to attack people, justice is decided in a court. That's the only reason I agree with this procedure. I hate vigilantes.

adaline · 02/05/2018 09:40

I don't think it should be released. I don't care about him, but about people who look like him, or have the same name as his alias. It's not fair on them.

higherupper · 02/05/2018 09:41

I think if everyone new what this monster looked like now it would reduce the amount of innocent people being wrongly accused of being him.

I feel sick whenever I hear his name!

higherupper · 02/05/2018 09:42

Why he wasn't jailed forever is beyond me

Surfingwhippet · 02/05/2018 09:42

What if his picture was released and it was the spitting image of your son, brother, husband and people then started vigilante action against him because they thought he was jon venebles

alexande · 02/05/2018 09:43

I don't think his identity should be revealed.

I think he should be punished for the crimes he has committed in adulthood, not the crime he committed as a child that he has already served a sentence for.

adaline · 02/05/2018 09:43

@higherupper and what if he looks like your husband or relative or son? Would you be happy for him to be innocent victim of vigilante justice?

It's happened before. People have committed suicide because the general public were so convinced they were someone else.

strawberry1122 · 02/05/2018 09:44

He's evil granted but part of me thinks he has done his time. It wouldn't bother however if he were ousted and beaten up though.

MissionItsPossible · 02/05/2018 09:44

I do see the need for anonymity but at the same time, doesn't a person have a right to know if they are in a relationship with this man?

FASH84 · 02/05/2018 09:45

There's no positive purpose for releasing his identity. One of my officers was sent a text with a photo, by one of her service users who's been sent a picture of him by someone who is in custody with him (Phones in custody is another issue). Obviously we reported this to police. Vigilante violence will just lead to more people in prison.

handslikecowstits · 02/05/2018 09:45

They won't reveal it because it sets a dangerous precedent if they do so. The repercussions for future cases, never mind Venables will prohibit them from revealing his identity even if it's easily obtainable on the internet.

echt · 02/05/2018 09:46

There are some seriously thick people out there:

FASH84 · 02/05/2018 09:46

@missionitspossible Claire's Law and Sarah's law exist for this information, he would also be monitored by MAPPA and local police, who can and have made disclosures to women and have also been the ones to find him in possession of IT equipment with inappropriate images.

pigmcpigface · 02/05/2018 09:50

I suspect this isn't as straightforward an issue as an individual being trustworthy or not. Protecting someone like him must take a lot of time, energy and resources in a climate where all those things are thin on the ground. I imagine a new incognito identity actually saves a fair bit of public money, and frees up resources for other things.

Soubriquet · 02/05/2018 09:52

I don't think it's just his past crime people hate. It's his continued attempt to keep breaking his conditions such as viewing sexual child abuse

@higherupper and what if he looks like your husband or relative or son? Would you be happy for him to be innocent victim of vigilante justice?

They could give out his new name, a detailed picture complete with birthmarks and scars and a pin his location on a google map and people who look like him will still face vigilante "justice" from the type of idiots who dish out vigilante justice. They aren't exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer.

They can't release is name, it would set a dangerous precedent and leave them open to being sued/criminal charges for doing something that led to him being killed.
