Daily Mail link to Avengers Mean Tweets Article

I didn't realise racism was funny

Kimmel has being doing those mean tweets for years. The celebs generally take them in good humour, they're often so ridiculously OTT or silly that they aren't taken to heart.

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 01/05/2018 13:47

Oh I know about him getting them read out etc usually it's a funny piece however if these tweets were read out by the black actors...particulalry the Scarlett Johansson "I hate white people" one there would be uproar and arrests and protests etc

OP posts:
Fruitcorner123 · 01/05/2018 13:50

Agreed. The others are just insulting but saying "I hate white people" is clearly racist and unacceptable.

Honestly though there are loads of awful things on Twitter. I report things all the time.

minderful · 01/05/2018 13:55

The butt of the joke is the writer of the tweet.

Where is the racist tweet?

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 01/05/2018 13:57

3 of them allude to race.

I thought the same! Why is it acceptable to be casually racist online.

minderful · 01/05/2018 14:02

Yes. They do.

As Ricky Gervais would say, stupid people get offended by jokes. The intelligent get offended by the thing being joked about.

The humour comes from the shock of the stupidity and ignorance of the message (Scarlet's), the whitey one seems like an observation (and I'd agree) and how is the third one offensive?

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 01/05/2018 14:06

I know the premise of "mean tweets" it's a funny bit of telly. I'm simply asking if someone tweeted "I hate black people" and It were read on telly as a joke or "bet he's one of THOSE black people" or "that's such a black name a cool white person wouldn't have it"

How would that be taken?

OP posts:
UniqueAsAUnicorn · 01/05/2018 14:16

It isn't racist. In any way. At all.

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 01/05/2018 14:16

How so?

OP posts:
minderful · 01/05/2018 14:18

"How would that be taken?"

You'd laugh at the ignorance of the person who'd written the tweet. Exactly the same way.

There is also the completely moronic argument that an -ism needs privilege as well. An oppressed class can't be xxx. Admittedly I've only ever seen it written on feminist boards as an excuse for hating men. 'It can't be sexist as men have all the power etc'

SmashedMug · 01/05/2018 14:19

Swap white for black and you'd have uproar.

MollyDaydream · 01/05/2018 14:22

Oh come on!

If you swap white for black it wouldn't be the same at all. White people aren't an oppressed group.

Does anyone really feel oppressed or threatened or offended by 'whitie'?

SmashedMug · 01/05/2018 14:28

I don't buy into the whole oppression bollocks of racism that gets trotted out when this comes up. It's either okay to say you hate people of a different skin colour to yourself or it isn't.

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 01/05/2018 14:33

A blog and a well written but off topic bit from the Huff Post?

Reverse racism isn't a thing. The OP agrees. It's just called racism.
