to think Paloma Faith releasing a single off the back of her advert for Skoda cars is actually pretty naff?

Presumably she got paid hundreds of thousands at least for the endorsement.

Now she's released the song she sings on it "Make your own kind of music" as a single.

Is this a thing now? I don't like it.

I don't like her version of the song as with all her music I've heard its whiny in the higher ranges. As a popstar/ brand I find her naff. Her collaboration wouldn't make me more or less likely to buy that car either.

But I don't find her offensive or think she shouldn't do what she does, it's just not for me so I will ignore it.

reddington · 30/04/2018 19:49

Naff cars so they go hand in hand!

Lostforagoodname · 30/04/2018 19:51

God she’s insufferable

TheSpottedZebra · 30/04/2018 19:54

You've got it back to front. Ad companies work with record companies to identify a fitting soundtrack - sometimes they option things that haven't been released yet, or things that are slated to come out soon.

ConciseandNice · 30/04/2018 19:56

This has been done for decades. I bought singles off the back of advertising back in the early 90s. Remember Simone White sold a shit tonne of albums off the back of her ‘ad song’. Nothing to get riled about. It’s the record company that make these decisions not the actua singer. Plus it’s a shit cover. Really is. Good luck to her!

topcat2014 · 30/04/2018 19:59

I quite like the bigger Skoda cars, tbh.

We drive a Fabia, - one of the smaller ones!

ScreamingValenta · 30/04/2018 20:00

This is nothing new - Brian May did this as a pp mentioned, 'Inside' by Stiltskin originated as a Levi's advert. I'm no fan of Paloma Faith's music, but she has done nothing wrong here.

IamPickleRick · 30/04/2018 20:01

It’s insipid. YANBU.

imweirdandcool · 30/04/2018 20:09

who listens to her

TheSpottedZebra · 30/04/2018 20:11

Also, for the artist, it's usually great exposure -getting your song and maybe your face all over the tv?
And sometimes the brand associations are really positive and work for the artist -strengthening the perception of who they are - eg fashionable, down to earth, edgy, classy...

Other times, the link up or the premise goes down like a lead balloon. And it can even kill the artist's career. Like Duffy.

Bunbunbunny · 30/04/2018 20:13

Where was you in the 90s???

Adverts and the charts went hand in hand! I’m sure flat Eric was an advert but can’t remember if it was for jeans

lanbury · 30/04/2018 20:17

Doesn't the John Lewis ad race to be Xmas number one each year? Think Ad music been a platform for chart success for years

DailyMailClickbait · 30/04/2018 20:19

The Levis ads were iconic back in the day - pretty much guaranteed that whatever the song was it would hit the top 10 as a result. "Inside" by Stiltskin is still one of my favourite tracks.

Ditto the Bud Ice adverts - remember the ant hill partying to "Bamboogie"? I remember specifically buying "Fly Away" by Lenny Kravitz after hearing it on a car advert years ago. Likewise I've recently tracked down "Ooh Wee" by Ghostface Killah (etc.) after hearing a snippet of it on a Dominos advert. It's been going on for decades!

TenancyTroublesAgain · 30/04/2018 20:19

Isn't that the point? That they record a song for something and then release it so people can buy it and listen to it?

HulaMelody · 30/04/2018 20:19

It’s such a cheesy song! Had always thought she was a bit too hipster for that.

megletthesecond · 30/04/2018 20:22

IIRC Moby sold all the songs off of his 'Play' album to advertisers.

MissionItsPossible · 30/04/2018 20:36

That song (the original) means so much to me so I automatically hate Paloma’s version and can’t stand whenever that advert comes on and I hear her voice. I don’t mind her though normally from what I’ve seen and I like Only Love Can Hurt Like This. Though Duffy’s career never recovered from the Coke advert she did so she should be cautious.

Midthreademergencynamechange · 30/04/2018 21:04

"So you are not upset. You don't like it and you started a thread in AIBU about it?

But you don't watch much tv anyway."

Yes, that sums it up. Have I done something wrong?

Ffs was happily listening to radio and this version came on. Turned over.

Singlenotsingle · 30/04/2018 21:55

It sounds so much like the Mamas and Papas they could have used that instead. It's certainly not an improvement on the original!

Singlebutmarried · 30/04/2018 21:57

Back to the Levi’s ads.

I felt very hard done by after the Babylon Zoo Spaceman song.

The only good bit was what they used in the ad. Rest of the song was shite.

ShirleyValentineswall · 30/04/2018 23:34

My brother was a DJ and had the 12 inch record of full versions of the techno/rave/whatever the hell genre it was mix so it may be available on YouTube, I should ask my cousin (also a DJ) who got all my brother's records when he died if he can tell me the names of the mixes. Will head to YouTube just now actually cos I'd like to hear them myself.

ShirleyValentineswall · 30/04/2018 23:39

Can't find the ones I'm thinking of but I found this

Sparklesocks · 30/04/2018 23:48

Whenever I think of Paloma I think of this hilarious tweet she did a few years ago 😂

19lottie82 · 01/05/2018 11:30
