to think Paloma Faith releasing a single off the back of her advert for Skoda cars is actually pretty naff?

Presumably she got paid hundreds of thousands at least for the endorsement.

Now she's released the song she sings on it "Make your own kind of music" as a single.

Is this a thing now? I don't like it.

It wouldn’t bother me. You don’t need to buy it.

I’m presuming there was a demand for it as a single, after the advert.

LittleCandle · 30/04/2018 18:57

Its not like its the first time this has been done. Brain May did it when he wrote a song and Ford used it for adverts. At least he wrote his own stuff, and didn't do a cover version.

Sparklingbrook · 30/04/2018 19:04

YY I would think people heard it on the ad and wanted to buy it. What's the problem with that?

TheDairyQueen · 30/04/2018 19:08

She's harmless, so what's the problem?

ShirleyValentineswall · 30/04/2018 19:11

Brain May did it when he wrote a song and Ford used it for adverts.

And Justin Timberlake released I'm Lovin It.

SomeKnobend · 30/04/2018 19:13

Oh is she? I'm glad, I love that song!

thecatsthecats · 30/04/2018 19:13

Good for her for making the money where she can.

I mean, lame as hell that she plays the quirky individual card and sells out to sell something as staid and pedestrian as a car, but good for her.

WinnersClub · 30/04/2018 19:14

Yes this is a thing now and surprised you're just realisingit. Everyone writes songs based on the back of whatever happened to them yesterday, be it a relationship break up, the weather, a bad date and in this case a car advert. They have to get their inspiration somewhere.

happysunr1se · 30/04/2018 19:16

It's a cover isn't it?

Louiselouie0890 · 30/04/2018 19:18

Isn't this how business has always been done?

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 30/04/2018 19:22

Ah well, she seems like a nice woman, and in that industry she's wise to make as much as she can, as quick as she can. Good luck to her.

Midthreademergencynamechange · 30/04/2018 19:24

WinnersClub - yes it is a cover.

The difference is that she is making a double whammy on the selling out to advertise a car. Of course there will be people who don't care and shrug. I'm not asking if she's harmless, I'm asking if it seems a bit naff or not.

Seems like I'm the only one so far Grin.

Think of all the Pepsi adverts in the eighties and nineties.

AmazingPostVoices · 30/04/2018 19:24

So person who makes money from selling their music has the temerity to want to make money from selling their music?

And this is a problem because...?

And adverts leading to higher record sales is hardly a new thing.

Nick Kamen stripping off in a laundrette helped shift a lot of “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” singles in 1984.

Babylon Zoo released Spaceman in January 1996 after it was used in the Dec 1995 Levi’s advert.

You are about 20 years too late to be upset about this OP.

EastMidsMummy · 30/04/2018 19:26

something as staid and pedestrian as a car

The very definition of a mixed metaphor.

tinytemper66 · 30/04/2018 19:28

An oxymoron even!

Queenoftheblitz · 30/04/2018 19:28

Don't like her voice - it sounds contrived. Song is crap too. I like her clothes though.

Grilledaubergines · 30/04/2018 19:30

It’s a mamas and papas cover. I like it. Don’t see the harm in her releasing it as loads of others have done the same. Megan trainor forcine.

popcorneveryminute · 30/04/2018 19:31

Madonna sang Like a Prayer in a Pepsi commercial. Don't remember thinking it was naff at the time but as a pp poster said maybe more surprising from someone like Paulina Faith who plays the quirky angle more than most.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 30/04/2018 19:35

I really hate that song and that advert.

No idea why. It just grates my last gear.

Midthreademergencynamechange · 30/04/2018 19:38

I'm not upset about it.

Is it really that common? I don't watch much tv.

OP posts:
Ginger1982 · 30/04/2018 19:41

Oh God does anyone remember Babylon Zoo and Spaceman from the jeans advert? Everyone wanted to buy it because of the high pitched singing and then got really pissed off when they heard it and it was mostly slower and lower 😆

SecretNutellaFix · 30/04/2018 19:43

The album on which the song was, was released in November 2017. The ad has been out for what, a month?

Highly likely that someone bought the album, heard the song, and bought the rights to use it as part of the ad.

AmazingPostVoices · 30/04/2018 19:44

I don't watch much tv.

We can tell. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 30/04/2018 19:45

So you are not upset. You don't like it and you started a thread in AIBU about it?

But you don't watch much tv anyway.
