I’m just catching up on My Year with the Tribe on BBC iPlayer and literally have a dropped jaw at the amazing hardcore woman who gave birth overnight totally on her own, cut the umbilical cord herself etc and then suddenly finds herself with an entire film crew pitching up filming her every move. It’s rainy season and she’s to stay in a wooden hut for 5 days on her own. Her DH says hes “not allowed” to touch babies until they’re like toddler age.

Makes Kate’s blow dry and 2 min pose on steps look completely lightweight.

I saw that and was also in awe of the new mother.

I don’t think anyone thinks kate is a heroine!

Well who can blame her having hundreds of photographers waiting for photos as soon as she gives birth, no wonder she has stylist and hairdresser etc ready to make her look good. You would do the same in her shoes!

I love that programme. I don't know how they survive on the little amount they have to eat.

The women had just given birth and had to have people faffing and fussing around her.
When all she probably wanted to do was chill. Me personally I don't think it's a situation to be envious of.

On the other hand you have the sort of anthropological approach of the BBC journalist where people in this state are some sort of endangered species to be strictly preserved in aspic for entertainment purposes.

And then of course you have the tourist $$$ of building the tallest possible treehouse you can and parading around in your penis gourd and what not.

As I understand it in strictly animist traditional societies murder rates etc. are actually extremely high in contrast to the 'noble savage' nonsense exemplified by Margaret Mead. It's a different approach as group membership becomes much more important as does customary law, so breaches of custom must be punished very strictly as it damages the group's cohesion and a superstitious society may appear to threaten the existence and survival of the entire tribe.

Personally I'd be most concerned that once the Christian missionaries have converted the tribespeople into modern living, the Indonesian will see it as a good idea to send more Islamic transmigrants (the Indonesian 'settlement' of Papua far exceeds anything done by Israel in Palestinian territories, and it's certainly less peaceful) from Java to build villages and take customary land. Pig-loving animists really do NOT mix well with brainwashed Islamic fanatics. And then the army/police with the crystal meth distribution won't be far behind.

To me any woman who has just given birth by whatever means or method deserves superhero status. I also believe they deserve privacy which both of these two women have not been given.

I am in awe of both of these two women, they have both done things I’m not sure I would or could have done. (Don’t confuse awe with envy). I also have a degree of pity for both.

There was a women from America who had a baby in a hotel room in Turkey, alone with instructions from youtube.... Amazing. She tweeted the whole thing(not at the time).
