get changed in the staff room in front of everyone? I mean, if you want to come into work in your own clothes, you should at least get changed in the toilets or something?

OP posts:
Heatherjayne1972 · 26/04/2018 11:02

In our place we have to change into uniform before and out of uniform after our shift. So someone undressing in the staff room is normal
However it depends on the job

MereDintofPandiculation · 26/04/2018 11:03

I know she's not naked, but surely you don't strip off to your underwear in front of people? Not for the sake of it, but if there are no other changing facilities and I need to get changed, then what else should I do? I won't push myself into their vision, and if they're upset, they can avert their eyes.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 26/04/2018 11:09

Totally normal in my last job, BUT it was in a school kitchen and we were strictly not allowed to arrive/leave work in our uniforms so we had to change in the staff room (I say staff room but it was just a room with a couple of freezers in where we all dumped our bags on the shelves and changed).

A furniture shop is not so normal. Why does she do it??

Littlechocola · 26/04/2018 11:11

I think it says more about you than her.

HollowTalk · 26/04/2018 11:15

Really, Littlechocola? You think it's normal at work to walk into the staffroom and strip off?

Oowatchasay · 26/04/2018 11:17

YANBU, it's weird.

JaneJeffer · 26/04/2018 11:22

I once worked with a woman who bought a new bra and decided to try it on and model it for everyone in the break room.

Strugglingtodomybest · 26/04/2018 11:27

I don't think there's anything wrong with this.

mrsdoglover · 26/04/2018 11:29

I have been known to change my top in the staff room but have always had a vest on underneath so nothing really on show. The times I wanted to get fully changed I would always use the loo just out of politeness and knowing my manager probably didn't want to see my mismatched underwear and flabby legs!
Yanbu to not want to see it/have it happen in the same room as you while your enjoying a coffee break. Speak to your manager and get them to have a word with her?

ORIam · 26/04/2018 11:34

The one time I attempted to get changed in my work toilet I put my bloody back out, so tiny is our toilet, it's smaller than a porta cabin. Now I just get changed wherever, all female work place.

blueheaven97 · 26/04/2018 11:38

Your work should provide changing facilities (and you should raise this with them), but until that happens she should be getting changed in the loo. YANBU.

InsomniacAnonymous · 26/04/2018 11:43

All those saying there's nothing wrong with this, would you feel the same about a man stripping to his underwear in the staff room every day?

DaphneFanshaw · 26/04/2018 11:43

Yanbu. At all.
It is not the norm in any job I have worked in. In fact we all would have been really surprised if someone waltzed in stripped to their pants and got changed.
I used to cycle to work and I just got changed in the toilets.

earlybirdhasanap · 26/04/2018 11:45

I don't think it's weird. I'm a nurse and everyone gets changed in the locker room in front of everyone else. It's been like this every place I've worked.

WomaninGreen · 26/04/2018 11:46

I'm with you OP, they should just go to the bathroom.

a poster made a comment about being surrounded of pictures of people in their undies - I think a picture on a wall is different than a person a few feet away from you.

I can't say I'm thrilled about the pictures though - there was actually an advert on TV for holidays which I thought was leading up to advertising some kind of soft porn - but that's a whole other topic.

Waugh's Vile Bodies springs to mind.

adaline · 26/04/2018 11:47

Yeah, one of the people who does this at my job is the male colleague. Granted he normally shuts the door or goes into the toilet, but he often strips off to get changed in front of people.

It's not ideal but when you work in a very small space with limited changing facilities, it's what happens. We have one small staffroom and one tiny toilet. There's barely any room to brush your hair in there, let alone get changed out of bike leathers and change your shoes comfortably.

DaphneFanshaw · 26/04/2018 11:47

There was really similar thread recently and I am pretty sure most people were ok with it. I wouldn’t be though. I don’t care if it makes me a prude, I don’t want someone changing in front of me when I am having a cuppa. I wouldn’t eat my eyes or leave, should have to.i would put in a complaint though.

WomaninGreen · 26/04/2018 11:47

PS a locker room in a hospital is different than a staff room where people are reading, having a cuppa etc. i mean the locker room exists for changing - though I'd want privacy myself.

DaphneFanshaw · 26/04/2018 11:48

Oh that doesn’t make sense at all. Obviously I wouldn’t eat my eyes.

DaphneFanshaw · 26/04/2018 11:48

Nor do I think I should have to Grin

TheDrinksAreOnMe · 26/04/2018 11:51

Yes. Why would it differ?

eggcellent · 26/04/2018 11:51

Both restaurants I worked in did this, wouldn't bat an eye tbh.

wanderings · 26/04/2018 11:52

My DH sometimes wonders about this: he likes to play sport after work, sometimes where there is no changing room, and often wears his sportswear under his workwear. Just before his game, he takes off his trousers to reveal his shorts, sometimes to surprised glances from those around him. He wonders if he'd be able to get away with doing this on the Underground, say. Would people start to look uneasily at him loosening his belt and lowering his trousers, even if there are shorts underneath?

Furano · 26/04/2018 11:55

I know she's not naked, but surely you don't strip off to your underwear in front of people?

Well, yes if I need to get changed and there aren't any better changing facilities.

I wouldn't parade around but a quick change of trousers (briefly showing pants) then a quick change of top (briefly showing the my back with a bra strap across it) is hardly an issue

WomaninGreen · 26/04/2018 11:57

wanderings "Would people start to look uneasily at him loosening his belt and lowering his trousers, even if there are shorts underneath?"

yes but why would he need to do that on the Tube? Can't he do it when he gets to the place for the activity?

people would probably think he was having a Reginald Perrin style breakdown and pull the emergency cord Grin
