To be really disappointed by the film of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society?

I loved this book. I went to see the film last night, knowing that it was a risk, but I could not believe how much had been changed for no apparent reason. I thought the casting was pretty good. It could have been a fantastic film, BUT ... major characters, that actually affected the storyline, had been completely missed out and other characters had been changed, so that they didn't resemble the original - never mind the changes to the actual story. Sad

Saw the trailer - Dawsey looked rather nice!!

CaoNiMa · 24/04/2018 17:52

It is a truth universally acknowledge that they always ALWAYS fuck up film adaptations. Gives me the rage. My advice is to avoid the moving pictures entirely in favour of the written word.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 24/04/2018 18:03

But Dawsey is SO handsome. The rest passed in a blur, to be honest. He's dreamy.

Hippee · 24/04/2018 18:04

I would normally agree CaoNiMa but I it's a long time since I have seen one so badly mangled. Our book club has seen a few films of books that we have read and they have been okay. Also, I love Emma Thompson's adaptation of "Sense and Sensibility" and prefer the film of "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe" to the book (some major changes there, though the screenplay was written by the author).

And yes - Dawsey was fantastic! I will be imagining him when I read the book again ( a bit like Gabriel Byrne in "Little Women" - he reconciled me to Professor Bhaer).

Oh no. Is it seriously rubbish?

I can cope with films that aren t true to the book. Do you think if you'd not read the book you'd think the film bad?

pandarific · 24/04/2018 18:10

Was it twee? Ad looked incredibly twee I thought.

(Not read the book, despite hearing good things I suspected tweeness from the title so steered clear. Is that twee?)

Ezzie29 · 24/04/2018 18:22

I’m from guernsey and I can’t wait, it wasn’t filmed here and I think it’s going to be hilarious. Dawsey is so tall and handsome! Doesn’t look like any guernsey native I know! I

Hippee · 24/04/2018 22:06

Stripeysocks - you'd probably be okay if you hadn't read the book at all. Most of my book club read it 3 years ago and couldn't remember the details so weren't as irritated as me, who could remember everything.

Hippee · 24/04/2018 22:09

Pandarific - book probably a bit twee - I probably have a higher twee threshold than you. Film - hmm - not sure if it's more or less twee - just a bit meh for me.

I read this in one sitting, therefore no film will ever be worthy of my time.

WellThisIsShit · 24/04/2018 22:14

Oh no, I loved the book, after really not wanting to love it, I got sucked in!

I don’t want to spoil it, so maybe it’s good the film is so bad that I won’t be tempted to watch it :)

5foot5 · 24/04/2018 22:17

Oh dear!

I only just finished the book about a week ago and am really looking forward to seeing the film.

I did wonder how it would transfer to film given that the book is written as a series of letters.

Well I will probably go anyway but thanks for the warning

Hippee · 24/04/2018 22:24

5foot5 - let me know what you think!

Goshitshighuphere · 24/04/2018 22:25

I saw it last week at a preview. It was ok but just ok. Not read the book. Didn't bother booking to see it again with my DD or DH (I have free cinema membership).

BrightYellowDaffodil · 24/04/2018 22:29

See, it was only when I Wikipedia'd it this morning that I realised how much the original book had been changed. I really liked the film but I saw that first - had I read the book first I'd no doubt have been disappointed.

Jux · 25/04/2018 15:50

I read it a few years ago. I would say it is charming rather than twee.

I did enjoy it, and shaall see the film when it comes on tv or netflix, but I didn't love it enough (or dislike it enough!) to pay cinema prices.

SalsaLala · 25/04/2018 15:53

Oh no, the books one of my all time favourites and I’ve been really looking forward to the film.

MrsSchadenfreude · 25/04/2018 15:56

Where was it filmed? France?

Davros · 25/04/2018 16:02

I haven't read the book but saw the film today. I quite enjoyed it but it was too long, very twee and some plot devices that were ridiculous. I don't know if those were in the book and don't want to say what I mean in case it spoils it for anyone. However, it had a good cast and looked lovely, er that's all I can think of on the positive side. I wouldn't go to see it again but I'd have a look if it was on the telly - for nothing.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 25/04/2018 16:35

@MrsSchadenfreude Devon/Cornwall, I believe.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 25/04/2018 17:05

It was filmed in Devon. Most around Clovelly I think. The bits I’ve seen from the trailer looks ‘wrong’ to me. Was hoping the rest of the film might be good enough to get over the ‘that’s not Guernsey’ thing. Doesn’t sound like it from this thread Grin

MyNameIsFartacus · 25/04/2018 20:39

Ah what a shame, I was just talking about this with a patient at work today, I was really looking forward to watching it - it's one of my favourite books, but if the film is bad I won't bother. It was filmed very locally to me in Clovelly too, me and my sister nearly auditioned as extras!!

Hippee · 25/04/2018 21:04

Obviously, it's just my opinion and other people might not mind the changes they have made. I found that they had changed so much, I couldn't get over it - loads of characters weren't in it at all - including Booker and Remy!!!! I don't want to post all that I think was wrong with it here, as it would contain spoilers for people still wanting to see the film - feel free to PM me for a full and frank review Grin.

I think you should still go and see it, it's not that bad. At the beginning I thought Dawsey was going to turn out to be a hidden German as he's got a funny accent!
