To have my blood boiling in defence of mumsnet

I'm telling you people, I'm mighty pissed off this morning.

What's getting my plus size knickers twisted on such a sunny Sunday morning? Well, to again have mumsnet referenced as some sort of devious place where women (shock horror) are 'allowed' to talk among themselves about stuff related to them with the insinuation it must be stopped.

Sorry for the language, but Fuck Off.

I've used this place for all sorts of brilliant support, from my daughter being bullied at school, step children challenges, menopause angst, to name a few. I've also been part of the transgender debate and have learnt lots, and challenged other views. It's called debate and discussion.

But someone else has said AGAIN how mumsnet is a dangerous place that encourages violence against people? WTF. No, never, doesn't happen.

What is this about? Why the push to close us down? Approaching sponsors to withdraw from mumsnet? FFS. So so angry about this now.

I love this place, it often keeps me sane.

HANDS OFF MUMSNET TOSSERS

Phew, feel a bit better after that.

AUBU? Hmm

Link?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5642853/Cabinet-minister-prompts-transgender-row-backing-Mumsnet-users.html

I know, it's the mail Blush but the article is elsewhere too.

It's not about views on transgender I'm objecting to, it's trying to tar and close down mumsnet as a place to discuss and debate. Same with trying to get sponsors to withdraw

OP posts:
Lacucuracha · 22/04/2018 11:35

Kudos to Liz Truss. Shocking that people want to shut down a platform for women to debate issues that affect them directly.

Where is the bit about activists wanting to shut down MN?

AsTheMilesTheyDisappear · 22/04/2018 11:38

Mumsnet sometimes appears very transphobic

Not all users, not all the time but its certainly more transphobic than any other element of my life.

glenthebattleostrich · 22/04/2018 11:42

From Justine Mumsnets comments in the times last week Lacucuracha. Activists have threatened to (and this week have started to) contact advertisers and threaten to boycott them if they don't end their association with Mumsnet. Cow and gate have been contacted by a couple on twitter.

As an aside, if I were a baby food manufacturer I'd rather piss off a small group who are less likely to purchase my products than 12 million members of a large parenting website!

Sunflowersforever · 22/04/2018 11:44

Sorry, I meant the accumulative conversation going on to close down mumsnet discussion. Justine Roberts (mumsnet founder) having to defend us and say we're up against the thought police and said in The Times she was willing to take any advertising hit to keep the site open and free to debate.

This isn't about our individual views, we're all different (as any thread shows).

it's about having a place to be able to agree and disagree. To debate. To tell me I'm being unreasonable if you want and say why. For me to come back and comment further.

It's about the very essence of what mumsnet is about and I want to defend it.

OP posts:
glenthebattleostrich · 22/04/2018 11:45

AsTheMilesTheyDisappear, discussion around biology and impacts of poorly thought out legislation is not transphobic. Discussion around the attacks on women for daring to want to meet to discuss the impacts of poorly thought out legislation is not transphobic.

At the moment the TRAs deem anything other than absolute acceptance of their dogma as transphobic.

Sunflowersforever · 22/04/2018 11:51

My angry rant isn't about individual or collective views on trans issues, it's about attacking mumsnet as a place that allows debate.

I've commented on everything from abortion in Ireland, rape cases, HRT concerns for menopause, Trump, acne in puberty, Trump again Wink. It isn't about the subject, it's trying to stop my/your voice being heard.

Enough! I stand with mumsnet

Mumsnet is the only place where I can read a wide range of opinion on this topic. Things that are academic and personal in nature. Do not suppose that I am not capable of differentiating between those radical types of trans radicals who are a small but extreme group and people in everyday life (who are friends and have been colleagues) for whom these radicals do not speak.
i know the bleedin difference and I also understand that a full debate on the subject does under no circumstances make me transphobic. Or any of the other women on Mumsnet.
Mumsnet is the only place I can come and find real help for all the things that happen as a woman, as a parent as a human being and get compassionate, thoughtful and genuinely helpful responses and I have seen the same happen for tons of other women. This place is a sanctuary.
Mumsnet has also made me laugh to I have done a tiny wee. It has made me laugh when I have needed it the most. But only people who have used it will understand the quality of succor that it gives to people who have nowhere else to go.

Sunflowersforever · 22/04/2018 11:57

I'm all fired up this morning. I want to start something, like Hands Off Mumsnet, but HOM isn't the best???

OP posts:
Ghanagirl · 22/04/2018 11:57

I started a thread (which got a bit derailed) about Mumsnet having issues with black women but there's no way I'd demand that site is closed down or should curtail free speech as OP said
I've used this place for all sorts of brilliant support, from my daughter being bullied at school, step children challenges, menopause angst, to name a few. I've also been part of the transgender debate and have learnt lots, and challenged other views. It's called debate and discussion.

Fairenuff · 22/04/2018 12:01

Mumsnet sometimes appears very transphobic

If you see it, report it.

Stating biological facts is not transphobic and that is what the majority of the debate is about on mumsnet.

And that is just one topic being discussed.

Advertisers are not that stupid they can see all the topics as much as the next person.

IamXXHearMeRoar · 22/04/2018 12:02

Us women are only half the population, how dare we communicate with each other, particularly on proposed legislative changes to our very definition!

This is how misogynists stop women meeting in public:

www.facebook.com/julie.bindel/videos/pcb.10160135970780316/10160135907955316

Just another form of intimidation.

We have the numbers and purchasing power, the advertisers know that Grin

Sunflowersforever · 22/04/2018 12:02

@Ghanagirl thank you.

I remember your thread. Lots of debate on it, and quite polarised. But that's debate. That's different views. Plus, this site is moderated so you can report and get a second opinion.

But free speech must continue

OP posts:
Skarossinkplunger · 22/04/2018 12:03

I truly believe that this debate has to happen but I strongly believe that Mumsnet is becoming a pro-TERF activist site and that this is being led by Justine and the rest of MNHQ and I just wish they’d nail their colours to the mast so everyone knew what they were getting themselves into.

Fairenuff · 22/04/2018 12:03

Truss could be investigated for backing a group that is effectively advocating violence against the transgender community.

Isn't that a libellous statement?

LineyHasntLeftTheBuilding · 22/04/2018 12:03

I am not transphobic and I'm sick of people claiming that I am because I want to discuss biology and child safeguarding issues.

Sunflowersforever · 22/04/2018 12:04

@Skarossinkplunger I disagree. I don't agree with what you've said. See? It's that simple.

OP posts:
Skarossinkplunger · 22/04/2018 12:06

sunflowersforever erm, OK then.

I’m not really sure why you mean?

Fairenuff · 22/04/2018 12:07

Mumsnet is becoming a pro-TERF activist site and that this is being led by Justine and the rest of MNHQ and I just wish they’d nail their colours to the mast so everyone knew what they were getting themselves into.

I disagree. Women referencing biology to discuss biological matters that affect women does not make them a terf.

Ooh ooh I can have a rant here! The thing that has been making me livid over the last couple of weeks is LGBT+ organisations attacking mumsnet.... As if it doesn't have a huge membership of gay/bi parents (like me). I'm get so angry every time someone claiming to represent the gay community attacks here.

YippeeTipTap · 22/04/2018 12:09

I got the impression that the people who attack and criticize Mumsnet the most are Mumsnetters. 🤔

Skarossinkplunger · 22/04/2018 12:09

Women referencing biology to discuss biological matters that affect women does not make them a terf

I completely agree with that.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 22/04/2018 12:10

To be fair MN does do a lot of censorship, its not exactly a bastion of free speech.
