I think that posters need to differentiate between well applied full face make up and drag queen makeup.
I wear makeup most days simply because I like It I have a demanding job and three children , but enjoy experimenting with makeup.
What I find fascinating is some people’s reaction
They will ask me why I wear makeup and can sometimes be quite sniffy. It is usually women who don’t wear any makeup who are quick to judge.
I don’t know if it’s because they don’t know how to apply makeup and therefore they feel slightly envious.

Haffiana · 20/04/2018 14:50

Lol at the posters judging those that judge...

Don't want to be judged? Stay in bed. Alone. On a desert island. On Mars.

NomadicMother · 20/04/2018 17:01

I'm actually fascinated by this makeup revolution. You have men and women wearing these really ott theatrical looks with bright colours. Ppl all over Insta sharing ideas and looks and for those who wear it at the time it empowers them and they show of their creativity. They will probably look back and think wtf but that's what all of us do. It's just experimenting. The trend will change I'm sure. I did see some schoolgirls with hella big painted eyebrows the other day and think whoa! But that's what teenagers do I guess. I used to have McDonald's strands at the front of my hair so.....

PutTheChocEggDown · 20/04/2018 17:14

I hate it too OP but lots of our young ones in work wear it. I see their pics on nights out and think, 'Gawd, you lot would be GORGEOUS if you weren't wearing that bloody horrible makeup!' Never say it obviously. I'm just getting old!

Cornettoninja · 20/04/2018 17:30

WAY beyond any makeup fashion from the past

French renaissance and tudors would like a word, in fact maybe today's makeup trends could be argued as traditional..

The girls I know who do this look so pretty without make up, with their ordinary eyebrows and young skin.

Ollivander84 · 20/04/2018 17:40

A lot of it is from instagram too. Plouise is incredibly popular and their speciality is heavy glam

Personwithhorse · 20/04/2018 17:42

I agree, the current fashion for heavy make up generally looks awful, as do the brows. I also think the ripped jeans thing is pretty tragic as well, although it has been around for some time. However, the make up can be washed off and the jeans dumped when they go out of fashion - tattoos however ............. are for life

Ollivander84 · 20/04/2018 17:45

Oh I'm heavily tattooed or what some people would class as heavily, I have nine tattoos. But when I'm clothed, they're not visible so doesn't matter about my age

Opheliasgoldenwine · 20/04/2018 17:45

I'm struggling to find a trend that everyone would consider good? I detest the 90's and 2000's trends, prefer this one to those (even though I'm not a massive fan of lots of eyeshadow and big eyebrows).

Jeepy · 20/04/2018 17:48

I'm a photographer and would concur that heavy makeup looks great in photographs and allows you to create an 'image', which is where the trend has come from. Face and body adornment is an ancient human rite of passage, intended to attract attention and increase desirability in young females, elders have always lamented the behaviour of the young.
It's just fashion. We
are in a very visual era, which creates identity issues, if you are susceptible to it. I love photographing women and making them look good for a special day, but most of them realise it's too hard to keep up in real life, where 'less is more' looks best, in my opinion.

Morphene · 20/04/2018 17:54

All trends, make up or otherwise, can easily be understood as follows: Somebody somewhere is making a shed load of money out of them.

In this case, its the cosmetics industry and people who endorse the look on youtube etc.

Fashion isn't harmless and it isn't fun. Its goal is to sell unnecessary stuff. If you think out of control consumerism is harmless go check out the plastic filled ocean. If you think fashion is fun then check out the number of children signing up for cosmetic surgery...or who report suicidal thoughts based on how much they hate their bodies.

WingsOnMyBoots · 20/04/2018 17:56

Some of them look like their faces are being attacked giant leeches. The eyebrow thing is just daft.

TheJoyOfSox · 20/04/2018 18:00

The good news is you don’t have to understand it.

If you don’t like it, don’t wear it.

I wear make up (less often now than in my youth) very often, I don’t judge others for their choice as to whether they do or don’t wear make up, their clothes, their lifestyle.

Why do some people feel that they have the only correct opinion on other people’s lifestyle choices?

Yes I agree the porn star make up trend isn’t particularly attractive, I know my mum hated my punk make up look in the late 70s, and wasn’t keen on my disco look in the 80s but I really had no affect on anyone else and I liked it.

Live and let live op.

Quirkyturkey · 20/04/2018 18:06

I thought the eyebrow thing was rather old hat now. My dd was doing it a couple of years ago. I did comment on it and was shot down (I'm from The Olden Days apparently). In the past year they've just gradually shrunk back to a relatively normal size.

MildredHubble88 · 20/04/2018 18:11

It’s not for me, but other people can do what they like. I do think the excessive eyebrow stuff is not flattering.

Charolais · 20/04/2018 18:13

I find the big black squared off eyebrows very entertaining.

RainbowGlitterFairy · 20/04/2018 18:17

What I don't get is the teens on the 7.30am bus like it. What time must they get up? Why would you get up that early to do your make up for college? I may be jealous because i have no make up skills

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/04/2018 18:23

It’s easy to say it’s a waste of time, money, energy and resources. All these girls want to do is fit in and find their tribe. They’re covering up beautiful, youthful skin. A small price to pay to feel in your comfort zone.

Roversandrhodes · 20/04/2018 18:31

Maybe you should try it

TheTroutofNoCraic · 20/04/2018 18:33

It doesn't bother me...I was a teen of the 90s: eyes like pissholes in the snow, skinny overplucked eyebrows, ghostly foundation and heather shimmer on the lips. Equally ridiculous. Like a painted egg.

Let people enjoy things.

abigailsnan · 20/04/2018 18:39

In the 60s we had totally blacked out eyelids and thick black kohl eyeliner (ie: Dusty Springfield) you couldn't even see our eyes.
My DGD has these thick eyebrows as does her friends its just a trend and they will come and go.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 20/04/2018 18:45

As someone who was young in the grunge era, this overly groomed look is fascinating to me. I wonder if it will go out of fashion and will look terribly dated or if it is here to stay.

I am amazed that it is now seen as a daytime look. I was at centerparcs last year and a young woman working at an outdoors activity who was I’m sure naturally lovely looking made me look twice (and more times) at her face. In the daylight and in that environment her mask of makeup looked so incongruous.

It’s not just girls who are doing it either. I work in a boys’ school and you’d be surprised at the amount of boys (who identify as not straight) who love to use this heavy make up look and pose on Instagram outside of school. They see it as the ultimate in looking beautiful if they can make themselves look like the Kardashians and pout in a photo. They’ve shown me the photos and they have amazing make up skills!

The other thing that I’ve thought it that it’s not straight forward buying makeup now, unless you get it from a supermarket. My local Boots is one of those beauty superstores and seems to be ever expanding with its range of make up and beauty paraphernalia. So much so that when I went in there recently to buy a blusher brush (I hadn’t bought a new make up brush in years), I didn’t know what to choose. I didn’t know what some of the names of the brushes even were or what their function was. It’s the same if your favourite make up product stops being made and you suddenly have to choose a new foundation. Have you seen the choice out there now? It’s flabbergasting!

ArDali1 · 20/04/2018 18:46

It's a trend people like to follow, like a lot of things.
I've never liked it personally, but everyone has their preference, and there are also many girls who are insecure and it makes them feel better. Whether it's because they want to hide something or just hate going out without makeup. One friend, cannot leave the house without makeup, even if you tell her she's beautiful without it, she will cry if she left the house without makeup.
Another friend who had really bad acne for a few years, and before she never used to like wearing much makeup but she went through such a rough time with the acne she was putting so much makeup to hide it.
Now her skin is clear and looks amazing she feels happier that she doesn't have to rely on makeup unless she's going out.

Another trend will start and everyone will follow...
