It's normal to judge appearances isn't it?

All the choices we make in respect of how we dress etc are advertising or signalling what we like, which tribe we think we belong to or would like to belong to etc. It's not that surprising or necessarily bitchy if another group doesn't "get" our choices.

However where it falls down is if you judge somebody's character or intellect based on their make up.

bettytaghetti · 19/04/2018 08:48

No purplelila2, I think you'll find that Praisebe got annoyed with someone else having an opinion. Or do they not teach comprehension at your school anymore?

Nextloorejext · 19/04/2018 09:01

I don’t judge folk on their looks, if i see folk just wandering around - folk wearing this ott drag queen make up really stand out though (and not in a good way) and i assume possibly want attention, gor folk to look at them.

Auldspinster · 19/04/2018 09:06

I used to wear a shedload of make up in the 80s and early 90s, nothing ever changes. I do wonder who decided the sharpie eyebrow thing was a good look.

ladyvimes · 19/04/2018 09:09

It’s just fashion. When I was a teen it was loads of bronzer and really thin eyebrows. It’s only makeup.

JacquesHammer · 19/04/2018 09:09

What is there to “understand”?!

Surely it doesn’t require that much critical thinking to work out people wear clothes/make up that they’ve chosen?

You don’t think it looks good. They do. That’s pretty much is from your point of view!!

purplelila2 · 19/04/2018 09:09

bettytaghetti here we go again oh snowflake oh don't they teach you that at school get a grip.

I won't make ageist belittling comments like you have about your age or generation!

purplelila2 · 19/04/2018 09:11

SerenDippitty how would it not benefit?

Onlyoldontheoutside · 19/04/2018 09:14

I remember when we all had curly perms, our necks were lost as there were shoulder pads in every item of clothing and were wore blue or green frosted eye shadow with slick of flavoured lip gloss. Those were the days.
I find the massive black eyebrows constantly fascinating but they seem to be on the wane.

purplelila2 · 19/04/2018 09:15

SaucyJack "Why you'd choose to go out looking like an extra from Star Trek: Deep Space 9......?

Highlighter doesn't look good in daylight."

Says you? We must take your word for it .
I say otherwise. It goes look good and makes your skin have a healthy glow.
Again belittling judgemental comments .

lanbury · 19/04/2018 09:16

I think each generation has some kind of style that the one before it thinks is awful. I'm clearly an old crow because I do totally agree that I find the present day fashion of slug like eye brows, layers of face cake, fake lashes, fake nails, fake tan, fake hair extensions.... all really horrid and yes, the girls do all look the same because of it. But then each to their own if that makes them happy and confident. Back in my day I hold my hands up to a very dodgey perm and fashion that should have meant a criminal record! No doubt the next generation will have something else to shock us with Grin

LadyOfTheCanyon · 19/04/2018 09:23

As a PP said upthread, the draggy element of this look saddens me because on a very basic level it's now fashionable to conform to a very sexualised look that has its roots in what Men think women look ( or should look) like.

Of course women can do what they want with their faces. I don't judge them but I do judge a society that holds this look up as desirable and aspirational.

There doesn't seem to be any "fun" in the look at all, it's just painting by numbers.

averylongtimeasSpartacus · 19/04/2018 09:24

I don't like the current make up fashions- I'm sure lots of others do, it's not a problem. I just think they look silly.

Mind you, I found a photo of me and DH from 1976 the other day. OMG we looked ridiculous!
So who am I to talk?

jay55 · 19/04/2018 09:26

Like others I find it fascinating. I’ll be forever grateful I was a teen at the height of grunge.

MissMooMoo · 19/04/2018 09:29

I think it looks silly too but its up to them if they like it surely?!
They probably think you look dreadful without it.

ThymeLord · 19/04/2018 09:37

It isn't just a young person thing. I'm nearly 40 and I get my eyebrows done, they aren't thick black HD brows because i'm a red head and that would look unnatural, but I have them shaped and then I fill them in and brush them out. They look great. I also get natural eyelash extensions because I like the way they look. I've been "contouring" since I was about 15, but we just used to use bronzer then...it makes a subtle difference if you know what you are doing and gives the illusion of cheek bones on my otherwise chubby face. I do it because I like applying make-up, like experimenting with colours and glitters and I like how I look when it's done. I couldn't give less of a shit what some random person in the street thinks, nor what people on MN think. I'm glad there are few photos of me in the 90's with my plucked-to-death one-line eyebrows and shimmery blue eyeshadow. No doubt teens and young women would be criticised on here for that, had MN been around then. As it stands, i'm damned if I am going to live my life according to other peoples expectations. Fuck that.

TrudeauGirl · 19/04/2018 09:38

I'm in my 20s and I don't wear heavy make-up as I prefer the natural look and my eyebrows are thick anyway.

However I think others shouod be able to express themselves in make-up however they want, it's just what they like, everyone's different.

ThymeLord · 19/04/2018 09:39

Highlighter looks great in the daytime, as long as you apply it properly and know how to blend. Lots of teens are experimenting and learning, so of course they won't get it right every time, but let's not let that get in the way of criticising them.

wurlie · 19/04/2018 09:39

I hate this look but it's just fashion isn't it?

If MN had existed in the 90s then people would have been posting that thin spermy eyebrows looked ridiculous.

BitchQueen90 · 19/04/2018 09:40

I don't really understand why it bothers people to be honest. We all like different things. I absolutely detest crocs but if someone else wants to wear them then who am I to say anything?

As long as the person who is wearing it likes it then that's all that matters.

TrudeauGirl · 19/04/2018 09:41

Spermy eyebrows Grin

Bluntness100 · 19/04/2018 09:42

Ffs, we just had the " I don't understand the porn star look" and now we are onto "I don't understand the heavy make up look" plus the " I don't like how Meghan Markle dresses" thread.

I might start a thread "I don't understand why some women feel the need to negatively judge other women for their appearance".

Because I really don't.

VileyRose · 19/04/2018 09:44

I think it's like a mask, and for selfies. It doesn't look comfortable on a hot summer day!

Jozxyqk · 19/04/2018 09:45

I'm not keen on it, personally, but I've never really been fashionable & I don't judge people for what they wear. I wear & have worn plenty of odd stuff in my time.

What really bothers me about heavy makeup, though, is - how the bloody hell are you supposed to scratch your face? I wouldn't last half an hour! And what if you got a cold - surely it would be ruined!

noeffingidea · 19/04/2018 09:55

Some people don't seem to understand the purpose of a discussion forum.
I don't understand or like it either, OP, but obviously it's an individual choice. As it hapoens you don't see many people with that look round here, at least not during the daytime.
It must be very expensive though. I honestly can't imagine spending that kind of money on make up, or any kind of beauty treatment.
