ie girls in their teens and 20s caked in heavy stage like make up with extremely heavy eyeshadow and false lashes- for during the day as well ! Wonder how long this trend will last..

As a teen in the 60s I had panda eyes, and very pale lipstick, along with hair back combed to dizzy heights. So did my friends. It's similar now, young women following a trend, although I have to agree re some of the eyebrows looking odd.

Even worse IMO is heavy make up and over dyed hair on women of my age. Thick foundation and blusher makes wrinkles more noticeable, especially on those of us who are pale. Hair dyed too dark just drains our fading skin tones. Subtle can look good, and having made the faux pas of our youth, we really should know better.

I have a young colleague who's very in to this make-up trend and does make up for other people too. She's very good at it and her artistic skill is admirable but they all look exactly the same. It is like a mask. But if it's done well and it makes you feel good then more power to your elbow. Done badly it looks ridiculous but the badly done teenage make-up is a rite of passage.

Finallyovernow · 19/04/2018 06:48

Shall we just get MN closed down!!!!!

Because.......

No matter what the title of the thread, someone comes along and says

"Why are you judging me? if you don't like it don't look" etc etc

Are we seriously no longer allowed an opinion ON ANYTHING??????

Do we seriously have to live in a bloody society where we just agree with absolutely everything because to actually say we don't like something makes us vile, nasty and judgemental.

Amanduh · 19/04/2018 06:49

Hmm don’t see what business is it of yours.
I think it’s stranger when people make no effort with their appearance at all, but that’s an opinion that will be frowned at, but if you wear false eyelashes you’re fair game apparently and ‘weird’

NerrSnerr · 19/04/2018 06:51

When we were teenagers the older generation thought we looked ridiculous, same for our parents etc etc.

LoniceraJaponica · 19/04/2018 06:55

“Is this like the thread the other day slut shaming women who want to dress up and look nice”

I don’t agree. I don’t care for the over made up look. It’s no different to saying that skinny jeans aren’t flattering or mini skirts aren’t flattering. Why does this opinion bother you so much? Why so defensive?

I agree that it makes teenage girls look like clones of each other. That said, I’m sure the fashions of the 1970s when I was a teenager did exactly the same.

I wear make-up – to enhance and flatter, however, at my age, the over made up look with false lashes would make me look like Barbara Cartland Grin

Juancornetto · 19/04/2018 06:56

I love watching the tutorial videos on YouTube and Instagram, they're very compelling. It's amazing how much product is used, I find if I wear a lot of foundation I end up getting it on my hands and distributing it everywhere. Their clothes must get covered in makeup stains

MaisyPops · 19/04/2018 06:56

but if you wear false eyelashes you’re fair game apparently and ‘weird'.
It's not wearing false eye lashes that is weird. I do think a particular look tjat is fashionable now looks silly.

Darker tanned foundation, massive stripes of silver highlighter, browny orange shading stripes, huge false lashes, loads of mascara, massive high definition black eye brows (probabky with more silver highligher under them) etc. I think it does look a bit silly and strikes me as being a bit of a duck pout for an 'instagrammable' selfie look. It reminds me of stage make up from when I did AmDram.

It'w perfectly possible to have a full face of make up on and not look ridiculous.

CaptainHarville · 19/04/2018 06:57

I'm sure I read somewhere that the fake look is basically big business making sure it's fashionable to wear loads of make up. The eyebrows, fake lashes, fake nails, spray tan, dyed hair must add up to a fair bit. Especially these days with you tube and reality TV stars able to push products really easily. It must be great for the beauty industry.

Cooroo · 19/04/2018 06:58

I find it a weird look too. But I can't see how that should bother anyone else. I never wear make up and if someone thinks that's bad - fine! I would never comment to anyone on their appearance, but random chats on Mumsnet are not judging, just wondering aloud.

My DD is more goth than orange, which pleases me as I prefer the look.

TheMaddHugger · 19/04/2018 06:58

I cannot summon the energy to give one tiny crumb of shit what other people do. It's fashion , innit? Probably cleopatra 's mum told her she was wearing too much slap.
As long as the person inside is decent, why care?

CaoNiMa · 19/04/2018 07:00

It's drag queen makeup. Appropriating men's appropriation of womanhood. Pretty fucked up, if you think about it.

Deathraystare · 19/04/2018 07:03

The worse part is that they all look the same, it's like a face uniform. I don't get it at all.

Everything is uniform - the dreadful hair bun, the scary brows, the too dark foundation and what they wear too!

It was more individual when I was young (60's/70's) but even then it was a craze at school to walk around with your Maybelline mascara!! Very odd!

Deathraystare · 19/04/2018 07:04

I like how my niece looks and am jealous that she gets her eye liner right. My eyesight is crap and my eyes water so it will never look as good....

megletthesecond · 19/04/2018 07:04

Some of their contouring isn't great. I want to go up to them and blend it properly.

Disclaimer; I don't own make up but I do like watching you tube make up vids.

DownstairsMixUp · 19/04/2018 07:04

It's not for me but if women want to have that look then I don't care either. I think as someone said above, people are now constantly worried about looking good in photos and that make up looks good in pics. I can't even say I don't understand as I constantly refuse photos as I look like shite in them but at the same time I cba putting heavy make up on each day

Deathraystare · 19/04/2018 07:05

Madhugger - I did a double take there!!!!

TabbyMumz · 19/04/2018 07:12

Amanda.....it depends what you mean by "make no effort". I don't wear makeup and as a result my skin is really good, fresh and clean. People openly say to me they think I'm a lot younger than I am. Because I wear no make up, do I fall into the category of "making no effort". I think not, think I just follow my own trend and not everyone else's. I think a lot of people wear makeup like a mask, and they are hiding what could be beautiful skin underneath, they just don't have the confidence to show themselves.

Ryder63 · 19/04/2018 07:14

It was 'panda eyes' when I first started faffing with slap. I chose green eyeshadow on the lid, yellow above. Bet I looked a treat! Grin

dworky · 19/04/2018 07:15

Those who wear thick layers of make up are hiding behind it due to insecurities. You shouldn't be judging anyway as they're not harming anyone.

Herja · 19/04/2018 07:16

I think a lot of it is just badly applied make up. I wear a few types of eyeshadow, liner, mascara, powder, 2 blushers, highlighter, 2 concealers, foundation, illuminating primer and brow pencil. I'll vrant it doesnt look like no makeup makeup, but nor does it look really heavy and cakey.

Herja · 19/04/2018 07:17

And you're pretty much right in my case dworky.

Oblomov18 · 19/04/2018 07:21

I do not like I it and I don't think it's flattering. But hey, it doesn't affect me, I'm old!!
