To get irked by people who describe themselves as an 'entrepreneur...'

I see it a lot on TV, like on 'first dates,' and other programmes where people are saying what they do... People (male and female, but mostly male,) describe themselves as an 'entrepreneur.'

And I know several people in real life who claim to be an 'entrepreneur' including my friend's husband, who has been faffing around for 10 years, (since he gave up a secure, well-paid, full-time job,) starting one business venture after another, draining the family money away, spending 3 or 4 months at a time at home (between ventures) and putting the family security at risk.

My friend has now announced they're going bankrupt, the house is being repossessed, and they are penniless - with 3 children aged 11, 13, and 15...

As I said this 'I'm an entrepreneur' bollocks really boils my piss. No you're not, you're just a selfish git, who can't settle in one job, and doesn't care about yours or your family's security!

This is just me, but I wouldn't be with a man like that if you paid me. Don't know how she has tolerated it for 10 years to be honest.

My understanding of entrepreneur is that it's something somebody else describes you as, not a job title!

He's clearly a twat!

DD43 · 17/04/2018 10:30

Oh no, he has always described himself as an 'entrepreneur' and so do the people on TV programmes. 'I am an entrepreneur' they say. They don't say 'people describe ME as one.'

Buy yeah, he is a twat!

I agree!

TheHobbyKing · 17/04/2018 14:53

It’s what people who do the MLM stuff call themselves.

UpperWallop · 17/04/2018 14:54

All the MLM bots describe themselves in this way too.

DownAtFraggleRock · 17/04/2018 14:55

I've always thought this, too. When I hear people say it I think 'twat'.

What's wrong with saying you're self employed?

IAmMatty · 17/04/2018 14:57

The only 'entrepreneur' I know has set up and closed down multiple businesses using his parents' money, and at 46 lives in a house in the grounds of their home.

Ghostontoast · 17/04/2018 15:11

The entrepreneurial spectrum ranges from "ducker and diver" to Richard Branson, but most of them are "duckers and divers".

Leafyhouse · 17/04/2018 15:14

So at what point would you graduate from 'Entrepreneur' to 'Small Business Owner'? Is it once you start employing staff? Or get premises? Would be interesting to hear people's viewpoints...

Deshasafraisy · 17/04/2018 15:19

It’s amazing for someone to be an actual entrepreneur, however the term has been misused to describe someone who has a string of failed businesses so is now associated with being a useless twat.

dandelion102017 · 17/04/2018 16:00

I was just ranting and used the same line 'boils my piss' about people on facebook promoting themselves as 'mindset coaches' and 'social media influencers'! so much self importance its unreal!!!

RunRabbitRunRabbit · 17/04/2018 16:11

Maybe like people who used to describe themselves as "in business" when asked what they do.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 17/04/2018 16:20

Stop it! I have to go to network meetings and I hear enough of this twaddle then!

I'm in business - yes mate, we all are. That's why we are here

I'm an entrepreneur - Can you spell that? I am not sure you can be something you can't spell!

I'm a business coach - I tend to travel in the 1st Class Coach

To be fair I know 1 great coach, she makes perfect sense out of panicky twaddle. But the rest of them see to spend their time generating Meaningful Memes!

Me? I was a new business owner. I am a Sole Trader. I am self employed. I cannot be arsed with gilding that particular lily.

Maybe I should just stop going to networking meetings Smile

JAMMFYesPlease · 17/04/2018 17:19

Oh God this annoys me. Now it's turned in 'mompreneur,' 'solopreneur,' and stupid other ones like 'boss mom' and 'girl boss.' All to make a point women are starting businesses and raising families. No 'dadpreneur' though. Those terms annoying me more than entrepreneur but theyre all eye rolling and I am self employed.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 17/04/2018 18:03

I know a genuine entrepreneur. In that he set up a business and then sold it for many (many!) millions.

He calls himself “a computer geek”.
