Everyone where I work knows how much I love working....one colleague said only last week I couldn't imagine coming in and seeing you in a bad mood.I work 13 hour days often and even and all weekends. It's my life.Recently I booked holidays and was surprised my days off were my hols so paid twice for seven day weeks.I accept.this.
I'm not afraid of hard work either my boss said I never stop.Recently I've been getting joint pain in my hands and knees Sometimes.so bad I can barely lift even light objects.Last night after a.short nine hour shift my.knees were so painful I couldn't stand.and had to crawl upstairs.I asked.Th for a drink and painkillers much to his anger and ranting.!
Today they are no better.so dang the doctor.who said I need a blood.test and examination.
I.was.working a.couple of hours this eve and told boss I needed to rest it with ice.
Work would be quiet but he would have to do a.couple more hours.
I'm sure the blood test.is.to see.if I have arthritis.
Next I get a text from.another colleague......You may need to cover the boss to make up the hours.....i.can barely stand and had planned on offering my next day off as cover anyway.
I'm furious.......I won't get paid tonight and they know I lost my Dad not so long ago.
I think it is disgusting.I know I'm feeling sorry for myself with being in pain.Aib u to have one eve off.i n. 9 months?

I work 13 hour days often and even and all weekends.It'slife.

YABVVVU just for this. This is why I can't have a decent work/life balance.

Op you are entitled to be off sick. You shouldn’t have to cover the hours for being off sick whether it’s paid or unpaid. It’s employment law, you are allowed sick days.

I think that’s what you’re trying to say. Often chefs do long hours, but being off sick shouldn’t mean you do extra, make it clear to them you know this and don’t in fact need to make up the time.

Workaholics - ruin life and work. Set bosses expectations way too high and make everyone else look workshy.

ExFury · 16/04/2018 19:24

So, you've had one period of time off because you are in pain and you collleague has text you to have a go like you are a lazy slacker?

I'd ignore them. Your work hours and whether you Mage up time or are unpaid is between you and your boss.

Do you get paid rest days? Is that the issue with the holiday?

So instead of your planned -
Mon holiday, Tue holiday, Wed holiday, Thur paid rest day, Fri paid rest day
Instead you had - Mon holiday Tue holiday & paid rest day Wed holiday & paid rest day?

So, you got the pay for both, but the merged them meaning you didn't actually get the break of both?

To be honest I can see where the confusion has arisen...

Butterymuffin · 16/04/2018 19:40

It doesn't sound like a great industry. It sounds like one you need to get out of as fast as possible. If you're on zero hours you might as well go to a temp agency and say you'll take something from them.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 16/04/2018 20:02

You have my sympathy. Working in hospitality is hard graft and zero hour contracts are an absolute piss take.

It's like this for most people in these sorts of jobs. You work hard, care about your job and give it your loyalty but the sad fact is that you're treated badly and will be replaced without a second glance. Sad

I suspect that the reason you are in pain and suffering badly with your joints is due to you working regular 13 hour shifts six or seven days a week. You have to rest.

The suggestion by a pp to consider temping work with an agency is a good shout. You won't qualify for any of the perks of a contract (sick leave, holiday pay or job security) but you will be working set hours.

Your body seems to be burnt out with your current work load.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 16/04/2018 20:31

Are you on prescription painkillers? When I injured my back I was prescribed strong codeine and they made me very spaced out indeed. That might explain some of your current mindset?

Add to that working such long hours in a physical stressful job means you're heading for burn out. You need to take care of yourself before you make yourself ill. Flowers

whatisforteamum · 16/04/2018 21:01

Thank you lost in.No I'm not on strong painkillers.....yet.Just over tired and grieving probably.I'm sure I will wake up more my usual self tuesday. Then my blood test.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 16/04/2018 21:57

Look after yourself. It's horrible having your blood test results hanging over you. It may just be that you're over tired, over worked and grieving and your body is telling you that!
I think you do need to rest, you sound very stressed you poor thing.

whatisforteamum · 17/04/2018 08:27

Thank you :)
