To be incandescent with rage with my colleagues

whatisforteamum · 16/04/2018 16:12

Everyone where I work knows how much I love working....one colleague said only last week I couldn't imagine coming in and seeing you in a bad mood.I work 13 hour days often and even and all weekends. It's my life.Recently I booked holidays and was surprised my days off were my hols so paid twice for seven day weeks.I accept.this.
I'm not afraid of hard work either my boss said I never stop.Recently I've been getting joint pain in my hands and knees Sometimes.so bad I can barely lift even light objects.Last night after a.short nine hour shift my.knees were so painful I couldn't stand.and had to crawl upstairs.I asked.Th for a drink and painkillers much to his anger and ranting.!
Today they are no better.so dang the doctor.who said I need a blood.test and examination.
I.was.working a.couple of hours this eve and told boss I needed to rest it with ice.
Work would be quiet but he would have to do a.couple more hours.
I'm sure the blood test.is.to see.if I have arthritis.
Next I get a text from.another colleague......You may need to cover the boss to make up the hours.....i.can barely stand and had planned on offering my next day off as cover anyway.
I'm furious.......I won't get paid tonight and they know I lost my Dad not so long ago.
I think it is disgusting.I know I'm feeling sorry for myself with being in pain.Aib u to have one eve off.i n. 9 months?

It's a sad fact that you often don't get appreciated for any extra hours you put in or unpaid overtime. If the company's policy is no sick pay then that rule will apply to you too. But I sympathise.

MissionItsPossible · 16/04/2018 18:06

Im a bit confused as to why your incandescent with rage at your colleagues? I can understand being annoyed at the texter but surely save your anger to your boss who sounds like an u grateful horrible prick?

MissionItsPossible · 16/04/2018 18:07

You’re*

whatisforteamum · 16/04/2018 18:11

My boss didn't over pay me.I'm off sick tonight unpaid I accept this and don't care.My colleague said I need to make the time up.I fail to see.how.when im.struggling to walk.

Is the issue the boss had to work additional hours to cover you when you could not work, and now needs a break, so you need to cover him?

And you're upset because you are signed off sick and can't work?

TipTopTat · 16/04/2018 18:13

Get your vitamin D level checked and get a new job.

Juells · 16/04/2018 18:14

I think people are being a little bit mean about the typing, TBH.

Bluntness100 · 16/04/2018 18:15

Surely the colleague was only warning you and they said "may have to" not you "do have to".

Why are you incandescent with rage at your colleague? Is the issue not if the boss is doing additional hours to cover you they need to get a break and someone has to do it?

ShatnersBassoon · 16/04/2018 18:15

Is it too obvious to suggest that you stop martyring yourself? There's obviously no reward for pushing yourself beyond the limits of your physical capability, so don't.

whatisforteamum · 16/04/2018 18:15

Peachy king I am sorry about your husband.I think it is disgusting how they treated him.I hope he is happy now.

steff13 · 16/04/2018 18:17

So has your employer actually asked you to make up the time you've been off sick, or did a coworker just suggest that that might be the case?

whatisforteamum · 16/04/2018 18:20

My boss will.work three of four hours tops.It is unavoidable.Surely being on a good salary it would be expected once in a.blue moon.

wibblywobblywoo · 16/04/2018 18:21

I don't understand the 'make up your hours' bit - surely if you're on a zero hours contract you can just say no to ANY hours of work if you need to? And I didn't think you got paid holiday on a zero hours contract either - I thought you just say "I'm not available for work for X days" and no work = no pay whether for holiday or sickness.

MissionItsPossible · 16/04/2018 18:22

@Juells
I think people are being a little bit mean about the typing, TBH.

I have just switched from my phone to my laptop and it's much easier to read on here. For some reason on the phone it bolds randomly for some reason.

I think you need to learn to say no. You can’t be made to make up the hours so say no, you aren’t well enough.

Your employer and colleagues won’t like it as they’re used to you saying yes all the time and picking up all the slack, but that’s tough, your health must come first.

It may be worth giving ACAS a call for advice about the annual leave situation. Do you have evidence of the rota being changed after you submitted your annual leave request?

Speaking from experience now, if this is the kind of stunt they pull, it’s worth photographing rotas in the future and emailing them to yourself so you have evidence.

YANBU for feeling angry but sadly this is not unusual - a lot of employers just don’t care and I’m sorry you work for one of them.

Highhorse1981 · 16/04/2018 18:29

Good heavens OP

I have just looked at your history. So many threads you have started about problems with your workplace!!

Coveredinbeeeeeeeeeeeees · 16/04/2018 18:34

You sound braggy first of all. Like you're going to win some sort of reward for doing ALL THE WORK.

Secondly, you have set yourself up for this by doing ALL THE WORK

Thirdly, incandescent with rage seems over the top, I'm actually struggling to identify from your OP what the huge problem is.

Skinnyboneylittlepony · 16/04/2018 18:37

The first four days are unpaid unless your contract gives you paid sick days as an added bonus. Any sick days after that are paid Statutory Sick Pay.

snewname · 16/04/2018 18:44

I get the holiday thing. You wanted a straight 5 days off and booked holiday for 3 days expecting to paid for your 5 day week and not being paid for your weekend. Instead you got paid for the 7 days but that means that you used 5 days holiday instead of 3 leaving you short on holiday left.

I think this will have taught you a lesson. Don't go above and beyond for anyone. No one will appreciate it and will take it for granted. Only do what you actually want to do. No more

SilverDoe · 16/04/2018 18:45

OP,

You're welcome, please take care of yourself :) Flowers

whatisforteamum · 16/04/2018 18:54

I don't do more than the boss.It isn't bragging to say I am a cheerful productive employee 99% of the time. The colleague who said I would have to make up the time is the martyr..They live in so get relief upon for cover and do extra as they want to get promoted (I dont). Yes I have had my huge tax debate taken from my previous employer and I was pushed until I lost half a stone at another. This industry is great but heaven help you if you call ill.

OP posts:
pigmcpigface · 16/04/2018 19:00

I am so, so sorry you are going through this. It sounds like you give your job 110% (and crazy amounts of time) for very little in the way of gratitude back.

I'm afraid that you are being used in this situation. I would perhaps re-evaluate my work/life balance in your shoes. You sound like a passionate person who is full of energy and drive - so many wonderful causes would love to have someone like you on board. Perhaps some of that overtime could be devoted to doing something else that you love more productively.

I really hope you feel better soon. Being in pain is awful. Flowers

Bluntness100 · 16/04/2018 19:00

An employer took your tax rebate off you?

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 16/04/2018 19:02

I used to do all of the overtime/got stuck with loads of weekends as a singleton. It resulted in me being first port of call and effectively pressured to go in. I had none of the life. Stop doing it op. Not worth it.

Wdigin2this · 16/04/2018 19:09

I sympathise with your pain, I have arthritis in both knees, and I'm living on painkillers, which is obviously not good!
