Everyone where I work knows how much I love working....one colleague said only last week I couldn't imagine coming in and seeing you in a bad mood.I work 13 hour days often and even and all weekends. It's my life.Recently I booked holidays and was surprised my days off were my hols so paid twice for seven day weeks.I accept.this.
I'm not afraid of hard work either my boss said I never stop.Recently I've been getting joint pain in my hands and knees Sometimes.so bad I can barely lift even light objects.Last night after a.short nine hour shift my.knees were so painful I couldn't stand.and had to crawl upstairs.I asked.Th for a drink and painkillers much to his anger and ranting.!
Today they are no better.so dang the doctor.who said I need a blood.test and examination.
I.was.working a.couple of hours this eve and told boss I needed to rest it with ice.
Work would be quiet but he would have to do a.couple more hours.
I'm sure the blood test.is.to see.if I have arthritis.
Next I get a text from.another colleague......You may need to cover the boss to make up the hours.....i.can barely stand and had planned on offering my next day off as cover anyway.
I'm furious.......I won't get paid tonight and they know I lost my Dad not so long ago.
I think it is disgusting.I know I'm feeling sorry for myself with being in pain.Aib u to have one eve off.i n. 9 months?

Yes this.device.is.obviously.playing.up.In our trade we are.always.expected to do more.I probably will have.a.word wit the.the.manager.The.colleague who is a friend should not have.text.that.If.i.do have any health issue.I will insist on.not doing nine hours straight like I did sunday.

I really don't understand what this means Recently I booked holidays and was surprised my days off were my hols so paid twice for seven day weeks.I accept.this. can you explain properly?

Is English your first language OP?

Do you get paid sick pay? If so, then just go off sick and don't come back until you are 100% fit for work again. All this coming in for a bit just muddy's the issue. Get your GP to sign you off for a couple of weeks due to the pain. Hopefully when you have your health sorted you can look at your work situation again?

BerkInBag · 16/04/2018 17:33

What sort of contract are you on OP?

SharronNeedles · 16/04/2018 17:41

In hospitality you can use your 'rest days' and holidays together to get time off eg.
If you wanted 7 days off together you could take Saturday & Sunday as rest days, Mon, Tues & wed as holiday and Thursday and Friday as rest days. I think OP is saying that they have counter her 'rest days' as holiday and she's lost some of her holiday days.
If this is the case it can be rectified

Wtf are you doing to yourself? Do you get any recognition or benefit to working frequent 13 hour shifts? In this country we don't value work life balance at all and people have a misplaced sense of pride in working themselves to the bone.

It's not good for you and is causing you all sorts of problems. If they don't value you enough, even after all you have given them, to let you have time off for appointments/illness then you need to look for work elsewhere. Stop working the ridiculous hours, you're running yourself into the ground. There is more to life than what heartless dickheads, who can't even give you a couple of hours off when you are in pain, think of you.

WipsGlitter · 16/04/2018 17:46

What line of work is it?

whatisforteamum · 16/04/2018 17:47

I don't get sick pay.I have enough money saved to more than cover my loss.I am over 50 so accept responsibility for my health and income.
I only feel I'm being taken advantage off.if I hook three days annual leave I expected t five days off.
I'm on zero hours.I do approx 55 per week.i

Sorry OP but why is there a full stop after nearly every word?

scampimom · 16/04/2018 17:52

OP is the pain making it difficult to type?

Peachyking000 · 16/04/2018 17:53

Honestly - going above and beyond your contracted hours etc is often thankless, and thus pointless. I too have done this in the past, to the detriment of my health and work life balance.

My DH

scampimom · 16/04/2018 17:53

Maybe you need a proper rest, don't be aggravating what sounds like a very painful condition by posting or typing

scampimom · 16/04/2018 17:55

I've also done that "work myself into the ground" shit and it's never worth it. I've also never known a company that will truly "miss you when you're gone". Your health is worth more than your employer.

SharronNeedles · 16/04/2018 17:57

bumble true but hospitality contracts rarely specify set working days and rarely will you not be given 2 rest days per week

Peachyking000 · 16/04/2018 17:58

Sorry, didn’t finish post. DH was recently given a verbal warning for his work attendance, due to 5 days off in a short period. He was actually hospitalised and his manager knew this, he had a sick line etc! This was even though he often works extra unpaid hours and comes in at short notice when other colleagues are off. He has now stopped doing this, as it was absolutely thankless.

Mightymucks · 16/04/2018 17:59

So basically you were overpaid, and your boss has asked you to make up the hours to repay the overpayment?

They are reasonable to ask you to do that. You are reasonable to go off sick if you are too unwell to work.

FASH84 · 16/04/2018 18:01

Hi I worked in hospitality when younger, I get what you mean. You booked three days off as leave (paid) then wanted to use two days off (normal non working days) from week one and two days off from week two so you'd be off seven days but only using up three leave days. some employers are flexible with this but you have to make it clear, if you just put in a leave request day 1to day 7 they might have assumed you wanted it all as paid leave. It's often complicated in hospitality as contracts can be low or zero hours compared to hours worked. As to the cover you need to tell him it wasn't a shift swap I was off sick whoever covered it covered it, I'm still unwell and I am happy to fill in any back to work or sickness absence forms when I'm back. Don't let them pressure you into covering it back x

FASH84 · 16/04/2018 18:03

As above but five days off using nwd's hadn't seen your follow up. Principle still stands

MissionItsPossible · 16/04/2018 18:03

@Peachyking000 Sad reflection of workplace life isn’t it? And then they have the nerve to wonder why people aren’t “loyal” to the company or question why they aren’t going above and beyond their role. My place never acknowledged the ten-twenty minutes I stayed after I was set to leave most days but demanded an explanation as to why I was one minute late one morning after 3 years of doingthis. Now, I leave when I’m supposed to leave.
