To wonder if all steam mops are rubbish?

2kidsnopets · 16/04/2018 10:20

I live in a house with a lot of hard flooring, and two mess creating kids.
I thought a steam mop would be the ideal solution for floor cleaning. I bought a cheapish one (about £30) but it was useless and I returned it. It seemed really flimsy and didn't make enough steam to actually clean anything.

Does anyone have a steam mop that they rate? Or are they all just as rubbish? The ones on the shopping channel look amazing but everything looks amazing on there so not sure that's a good thing to go by!

I think they are crap. I've just bought a normal mop. My kitchen floor felt so much cleaner.

BestBeforeYesterday · 16/04/2018 10:22

I have a Vileda and it cleans really well. I wouldn't use it if you have wooden floors as it takes the shine off them, but other than that, it's fantastic.

gamerchick · 16/04/2018 10:26

I still need a mop and bucket, I just use the steamer to sterilise. Means you don’t need chemicals and they do bathrooms a lot better than chemicals anyway.

Pinkkahori · 16/04/2018 10:29

I have lots of hard flooring and bought a Vax steam mop. I think it's fine. Every now and then I give the kitchen floor a good scrub with a regular mop and a scrubbing brush because the steam one doesn't do the edges very well but it's perfect for a quick run over my laminate floors.

dangermouseisace · 16/04/2018 10:31

I got one free with my carpet cleaner, from Vax. I wouldn't have bothered buying one otherwise. It would have been around £60 if I bought it.

It's brilliant for doing the lino in my kitchen- no more scrubbing. My mum was so impressed when she used it whilst looking after the kids, that she bought one for her house.

LiquidCosh · 16/04/2018 10:32

Any that I have tried have been rubbish, water everywhere and a tiny puff of steam!

joystir59 · 16/04/2018 10:33

Just use a mop. I doubt you are dealing with toxic waste are you?

Pinkkahori · 16/04/2018 10:33

Mine doesn't put water everywhere. The floors are almost dry when I'm finished.

DaisyDoo80 · 16/04/2018 10:34

I have a shark one and I'm really pleased with it. Floor dries quickly as it doesn't make it too wet.

Chocolate1984 · 16/04/2018 10:43

I bought my vax steam mop 5 years ago for £60 & I love it. I Hoover my floors first & then steam them. Any stubborn marks I just keep scrubbing. Sometimes I spray A cleaner on the floor & steam mop over it. I wouldn't use a mop again.

2kidsnopets · 16/04/2018 10:44

Hmm, so it's maybe a marmite thing then.

gamerchick I was wondering about one where you can unclick the steam bit to do bathrooms and stuff. I hate cleaning bathrooms so anything that makes it easier is worth it!

I've got a Morphy Richards one similar to this (but older model - have had it for about 4 years) and it's fine. I find it particularly good for cleaning the hob - it blasts away any burnt on grease really quickly.

Loved my vax one but can't use it on the floor in the new house as it's karndean. Have had to go back to a velida sponge mop thing.

Creambun2 · 16/04/2018 10:52

Using a steam mop is vulgar

Roomba · 16/04/2018 10:56

I have the one that ScreamingValenta linked to. It's really good - the detachable bit is fab for blasting grot off the hob, doing tiles, nooks and crannies. The floor mop but is also good on tiled floors, lino and carpets, but I find I have to fasten the pads on really well so they don't scrunch up as I mop. I've also done my laminate well with them, I don't think I'm suppose to use a steam mop on it, but it's shot at anyway and doesn't seem to have been damaged any further by it.

Roomba · 16/04/2018 10:57

Vulgar? Confused

My kitchen floor looked a lot more vulgar before I started steam cleaning it!

georgie262 · 16/04/2018 11:10

I have a steam mop because it's quicker and easier to clean my hallway tiles than filling up a mop bucket. HOWEVER and it is a big however for me it seems to push a lot of the muck into the grout then I spend ages one a week scrubbing the grout so kind of defeats the purpose.

Winosaurus · 16/04/2018 11:14

I have a Vax steam mop and it’s brilliant.
I bought it when my kids were crawling I didn’t want them getting chemicals from cleaning products on their skin.
You don’t have to scrub if there’s a sticky stain you just hold it over it for 10-20secs and it lifts right off.
Plus the floor dries so quickly - with a normal mop the floor stays wet for a good while, but the floor becomes so hot with a steam mop it dries in seconds.

I love mine

Winosaurus · 16/04/2018 11:15

Also it’s amazing for cleaning bathroom tiles with the detachable head bit. My tiles are prone to mould and the steam mop takes it all off so quickly

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 16/04/2018 11:21

Vulgar? Grin

I had the shark one - broke after 2 years but it was good while it lasted. Bought a cheap one and it wasn't worth it. But they damage the wooden floors so in all hinestly it's probably not worth it for just the kitchen and bathrooms

minniemoll · 16/04/2018 11:21

I love my Vax steam mop, I have hard floors throughout downstairs; I hoover them to get any loose dirt up then whizz the Vax over and they're lovely and clean. Ditto the bathrooms.

DaisyDoo80 · 16/04/2018 11:30

Vulgar?

I didn't know it was even possible to have a vulgar method of cleaning!

Hey ho, I may be vulgar but at least my floor is clean!

Astella22 · 16/04/2018 11:34

Another vote for the vax steam mop, Ive had it since the floor was put down and it keeps it nice and clean. I also have the microfiber attachment bit and it keeps the tiles streak free. I love it!

Schroedingerscatagain · 16/04/2018 12:21

Another vote for my vax steam mop too, I’ve had 2 others but really like this vax one

You can use it as a hand held and it has a lovely articulating head for going round things
