To wonder if all steam mops are rubbish?

I live in a house with a lot of hard flooring, and two mess creating kids.
I thought a steam mop would be the ideal solution for floor cleaning. I bought a cheapish one (about £30) but it was useless and I returned it. It seemed really flimsy and didn't make enough steam to actually clean anything.

Does anyone have a steam mop that they rate? Or are they all just as rubbish? The ones on the shopping channel look amazing but everything looks amazing on there so not sure that's a good thing to go by!

I bought mine from Lakeland, it is fantastic! Loads of steam, gets floors extremely clean, no pools of water left behind. I just wish I could be bothered to use it more than a few times a year... In my defence if I spill something I use a floor wipe on it so my floors are not completely minging Grin

I'm intrigued how a steam mop can be vulgar!
Our hard flooring is commercial grade plasticky planking that click together somehow. It sounds horrible but it's better than it sounds. It'a wood effect but definitely never been near a tree! We have a big open plan living area and I find floor stays wet for ages with a normal mop, hence wanting to try a steam mop.

Had a couple of Vax mops which felt flimsy and broke after a while but I recently replaced the last Vax with a Shark which is much sturdier and does an excellent job of keeping the boot room floor clean from all the crap that is dragged in from outside (I live rurally so lots of mud around this winter).

SluttyButty · 16/04/2018 12:58

On what planet can using a steam mop be described as vulgar? Confused

I use a mop and bucket downstairs but the steam mop in the bathroom. I've got one with the detachable bit and whizz it over the tiles and grout, all around the loo and taps to obliterate any of that 'man dirt' 😂

FluffyWhiteTowels · 16/04/2018 13:07

I bought one on a whim in Aldi and really like it. Floor very clean. Less storage space than a bucket and dries very quick

Hoppinggreen · 16/04/2018 13:12

I use mine a couple of times a week ( muddy dog) but it certainly doesn’t clean as well as a mop
I mop if nobody else is home and it’s ok for the floors to be wet for a while but if people are going to be walking on them soon I steam clean

Shadow666 · 16/04/2018 13:18

I bought a Shark one 5 years ago as we had a lot of hard flooring and I didn’t want my toddler playing in the bucket of water I’d need for a mop. It’s still going strong and works great. I think with steam mops you get what you pay for.

SweetLike · 16/04/2018 13:19

My Vax is really good. I break the rules and put Zoflora in it.

TheWernethWife · 16/04/2018 13:21

Love my Shark, my daughter got one after seeing mine in action.

winterisstillcoming · 16/04/2018 13:33

I have a fax mop, I use those micro fibre slipper things and to dry and lift dirt as I mop. I do the skirts and corners with my feet.

WhereDoLostSocksGo · 16/04/2018 13:38

I've got the green h20 x5 steam mop. Bought it 6 years ago after watching so many 5.30 am tv adverts when ds was waking up early.

It's done everything they said it would. Great on carpet/laminate/vinyl (and wood, on low, although I told DH I wouldn't use it for wooden floors).

Attachments clean lots around the home, it was well worth the £100 although I'm sure it's cheaper now.

SluttyButty · 16/04/2018 13:59

@SweetLike Do you mean you put zoflora in the cleaning liquid container in your Vax? Why did t I think of that instead of buying the separate revolting pine smelling one. Do you add water or just neat zoflora?

MonkeyPoke · 16/04/2018 17:02

I had a Vax one and it was shite, now I have a Shark one and it's heavy and bulky but good.

Chasingsquirrels · 16/04/2018 17:11

One of the questions and answers on the Murphy Richards one linked to on Argos talks about using distilled water - is that necessary?

moofolk · 16/04/2018 17:14

I had a Vax one. We called it the Robomop. Definitely less faff than proper mopping!
It broke and considering getting a new one - was thinking about a cheaper brand but ppl seem to like Vax.

SistersOfPercy · 16/04/2018 17:14

Happy to be vulgar! I love my Vax one!

moofolk · 16/04/2018 17:17

Shadow, Werneth and Monkey, what is better about the Shark?

Beamur · 16/04/2018 17:18

Why vulgar?
I use ironing water in mine, smells nice. Only good for fairly superficial cleaning in some respects, but v good to run over rugs etc, when you have pets.

I have a basic Sainsburys steam mop. It’s just a floor one but have had it about 4 yrs and it’s brilliant. Leaves my floor spotless and shiny, dries within minutes. I’ve tried lots of different kinds of mop as whole of downstairs is hard flooring but nothing is as quick. I use the water from my tumble drier in it.

WhatAPigsEar · 16/04/2018 17:24

Love my Vax steam mop but I only use it for floors, using the Vax detergent. I might try it with the nozzle on the grouting now and definitely going to try it with a zoflora when I run out of detergent!

noenergy · 16/04/2018 17:38

My shark one is great, the floor drys very quickly.

MadisonAvenue · 16/04/2018 17:42

I've got a Karcher one which is brilliant!

Vulgar Grin

gwenneh · 16/04/2018 17:45

I love my shark one -- I like that there's zero residues left on the floor.

steff13 · 16/04/2018 17:47

I have a Shark, and I love it. We carpet most everywhere, so it's only used in the kitchen and bathrooms. The floors feel so much cleaner. I also have a handheld steam cleaner that is great for cleaning all kinds of areas. I especially love it for sticky spills in the fridge, where I don't like using cleaners.
